Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

Friedman on 32T insinuated that the Leafs might be compete on the higher-end targets at the deadline due to a lack of assets. He defended the leafs reported interest in Luke Kunin. I think we should prepare ourselves for an underwhelming acquisition (Unless they use the 2026 1st or Minten/Cowan/Danford).
Obviously we won't be competing for high end targets. Contrary to popular belief we have very little assets to pull off a big trade. Fans can add up all the Robertson, Kampf, Holmberg, Niemela, 2nd round pick, Dewar, Jarnkrok and Timmins all they want. It won't get you anything.

This situation was decided years ago. We've lost depth year over year. We lost draft capital year over year. For the foreseeable future, we are the core 4 and then whatever, slightly old, slightly injury prone, slightly Toronto-born players we can sign in Free Agency.

Disagree. We have younger pieces in Minten, Cowen, Grebs, Danford. Knies with 18 goals and McMann with 14 ain't completely nothing for depth scoring. Robertson has 8 and that was with an early dry spell... I suspect more than a few GM's would take a chance on him. Almost all teams in the hunt will make deadline trades to push their team over the top, and we have been in the hunt for a few years now so naturally we have taken chances, as most teams would. Not crazy about some of the deals Dubas made but almost everyone agreed they needed to try a push. We are no different than other teams, and many would love to have our problems.

Treliving seems really uncreative and unable to really pull off good short or long-term deals, maybe even both. We're 2 and a half years into his tenure and he hasn't made a significant trade since. Maybe that changes soon?

I'm fully prepared to be underwhelmed, or maybe just whelmed. Kunin would be in the whelmed category depending on the price to acquire.

Anyone who was expecting a blockbuster deal before the trade deadline is crazy. We all knew it was gonna be depth adds. Tre did the bulk of the major roster changes in the off-season.

This is gonna be another depth add type of trade deadline. Pretty obvious.

Luke Kunin and Oleksiak type of adds. Im hoping we get Ryan Donato. Sneaky good offensive player

Does it have to be a blockbuster? Is it blockbuster or just depth adds, no in between? I dunno why this team needs to bother with another trade deadline where they only add a couple rentals depth pieces.

He made solid signings in the off-season but it hasn't really translated into anything really all that different from previous years other than Stolarz playing way above his expected value.

Really depends on what you deem as "in between". Because I think Ryan Donato is a player who I think would be a really good add at the deadline, but you would think its just a depth add. Us being so close to the cap doesnt help.

Regardless of whether or not Stolarz is playing above his expected value...Tanev/OEL/Stolarz have all been transformative for our defense and goals against. Steven Lorentz has also been a great find for the bottom 6.

More work to be done im sure

Pasta makes 11.25m and they offered 11.75m ... what is a little to Kyper or is he glitching again?

In the grand scheme of things. Is 500,000k a lot more? Also we are hearing that Avs actually didn’t even go to 11.75. That’s what Rantanen’s camp was willing to go to. Avs wanted him even lower than 11.75

That depends what kind of impact they have when added and if they are retained past their rental status if they are that. We're not that close to the cap because of LTIR and really, teams can get around that by being creative. With all that said, I don't think this team needs to go banana's and make huge blockbuster trades to achieve playoff success, but Treliving needs to start pulling his weight a little more -- especially in the off-season in terms of player and asset management. There's a pretty big hole down the middle and there are a lot of passengers on this team right now.

A lot of the free agents adds have been solid to great this past off-season. I don't disagree at all. So much better than the previous off-season where they wasted a lot of their cap on useless players.

So basically nothing that can help

Is Murphy considered a high end piece? That's about as big as I figured we might be in on.

I'd still consider Peyton Krebs, as an acceptable 3C, who brings some physicality, and once moved from Buffalo, and with better teammates might grow into a bit more than he's shown. He's a RFA at the end of the season, so he'd be a C we'd have control with.

Maybe ask for Jordan Greenway as well, 50% retained. He's been injured most of the season, and hasn't really worked out well for them. He's a UFA at the end of the season, and they'll probably both want to go in different directions. But, if the cost wasn't too much, he'd be a great addition to our 4th line... I'd rather have him than Dewar or Reaves in the lineup.

Anyone think the leafs should offer Marner 11.75m like Rantanen reportedly would have signed for?

If not ask him to waive and trade

Boring TDL...I don't love the defense but I can't fathom they'll do much more unless Hakanpaa proves he cannot stay healthy.

Maybe Henri Jokiharju could be a soft target if they don't want to spend a lot of assets?

Based on?

Darren Ferris went on a rampage about how Marner was pressured into taking a discount after Jeff O’Neill freaked out about Marner refusing 11x7 and he took a discount

Dreger went on the air talking about how Marner was offered more in CBJ

I like Scissions, but these trades decimate our depth. Nicky Bobby has been a very effective 3rd liner since December. Homberg is capable of playing 3rd and 4th line wing. Personally, I'd be happy with a better d depth option than Timmins and a 3rd line C that is somewhere between Domi and Kampf. I'm not entirely sold on Domi but I have a feeling, if he is moved, he will be an off season move. So my expectations for this TDL is low.

Yep. Ferris is the sleaziest agent in the NHL. You just know eventually it will probably come out he was trading information in the media and paying for positive spins and spotlights for his players. Anyone see the Marner with a dog on the ice gimmick? Very dangerous for dogs but hey we got opinions to change and hearts to melt.

So freaking contrived.

I forget who it was honestly but the thought was that Nick Robertson would still more likely than not be traded this year.

Holmberg has a good game every 10 games, takes some bad penalties and doesn't do anything else well enough for me to care if he went or not.

On that particular depth chart above, I am okay with Rifai and Benning in the AHL coming up if need be.
