A lot of people in here clamoring for the Leafs to make a similar move to the Avs but it would be those same people with shit dripping down their legs when a player like Marner would go somewhere else and have success and the Leafs have nothing to show for it.

Drury is a nothing piece. He's just okay and the type of player you can get all day long in free agency in August. The 2nd and 4th are assets. Great assets? No? We keep hearing about how the Leafs have no assets. They have 2nds and 4ths.

Necas ia a piece. He's having a great year after putting up Domi numbers last season.

Everyone needs to calm the f*** down. Every trade made in the league doesn't need to cause an absolute shit storm here.
It's a hockey board, and you're in the Leafs trade/FA thread; why are you surprised?

And we should be talking about how it does relate to this team because if the rumours are true and Rantanen is after something like $14m, then how that pertains to Marner and how they deal with him from now until summer is probably the biggest Leaf issue of the year.

Be a little more fair to Necas here.

Last year was an off year but he's typically been around a pt/game.

Is he Rantanen? No, he's a tier down.

If 12M could get that done for Colorado, they should have done it but if Rantanen wouldn't sign for less than 14M then what can you do?

AND KABOOM something brewing bigger than the Rantanen deal?

Pettersson?

Exactly. Which is why it's relevant to this team. Not that I expect Tre to make a comparable move because I don't think he will do that kind of deal after the Tkachuk deal and also to be the GM of record that breaks the core up.

But it would be nice to see the same kind of proactiveness if Mr. Feris is being as obstinate as we know he can be.

Marner has a full NMC
I seriously doubt he's waiving as well

We either resign him or he's walking as a UFA, those look like the only options the team currently has

It takes an elite understanding of this blockbuster trade to find some kind of silver lining for Chicago.

They got a 3rd for Taylor Hall and retaining 50% on Rantanen?

What's going on here?

I think Hall 50% retained was maybe pulling a 4th, retaining even more (Rantanen's salary is larger) got them a 3rd...and without a retention, maybe a 5th.

Domi may not score 24 more goals for the rest of his career the way he is not scoring goals.

Comparing Necas to Domi. Who's the one who needs to calm the f*** down?

Here are the 3 games Domi scored his 3 goals this season. Hope my grammar and spelling are OK.

You'd think just the retention would cost a 3rd, or more. So Hall was basically given away for free, or even they paid a bit to dump him...

Gotta think they could have come away with more.

No it really doesn’t. It’s quite simple. They wanted to move Hall’s full cap hit. Who in their right mind is going to take hall at a full 6 million at the deadline?

So they agreed to do the retention if Carolina agreed to take on the full Hall cap hit. They probably could have asked for something else like higher draft picks but getting rid of Halls entire salary was more valuable than any pick in this situation. Why is this significant?

Chicago has 3 retention spots. They are retaining on McCabe right now. They just agreed to retain on Rantanen. If they agreed to retain on Hall it means they could not retain on Seth Jones who they want to move and carries WAY more value than Hall. But in order to move Jones they will almost certainly have to retain. They also got North of 1 million in cap savings here. So it’s actually a good move for them.

I see your point, but to me it feels like CAR's pennies on CHI's dollar.

1- ayeah that's help but the change didn't come with one player but with every player on the ice.

2- if last 10-13 is the worst they played all year long, they're still a pretty huge upgrade in the way they protecting their lead

3- Tampa is a pretty good team but only 3 pts in front of team like MTl or Ottawa, NYR is a pretty good team and actually out of playoff, Boston still a good team who always found way to have succes and could also miss the playoff. The difference between leading the division and be out of playoff is like 4 game, so exemple moving from marner to necas/ drury like colorado did with Rantanen could that result in 4 win ----> 4 Lost.... yeah certainly no doubt about it.
1. No doubt the change didn’t come with one player but Tkachuk is better suited than Huber.
Whose to say a player or two out there is not a better fit to the current system than any of AM, MM, Willie, JT and Reilly.

2. Leafs(core and Keefe) been pretty good in the regular season over the past 5 yrs too. How did that go in the playoffs? Point I am trying to make is that is it the system or the players? What if our guys just collectively can’t play a system that needed to win in the playoffs?

3. Any of the core 5 moving out also means there will be replacements player(s) coming in. I doubt Tre will replace AM with three Kampf, although if that’s what needed to win the Cup, who cares.

The point is the build a team to win the Cup and not have certain players winning the Cup for the Leafs.
Like if last summer Jets would trade Helle for MM or Willie, is that really a bad deal?
Or Reilly and MM for Miller and Hughes in the past summer…..

Looks like Malkin may have just suffered a significant knee injury.
Sid is really going to the Avs

Hall is a UFA this summer like Rantanen and half of Hall caphit is less than half of Rantanen caphit.
In a way, if Hawks is willing to take half of Hall’s caphit, I think they can get a 3rd from a desperate team.
