Rumor: 2024-2025 Trade Rumors and Free Agency Talk | Part Deux

For the 2025/26 season the Avs currently have $78.826m invested in the roster below.

xxxxx ------------- MacKinnon -- Necas
Lehkonen ------ Mittelstadt --- Nichushkin
Colton --------------- Drury -------- Ritchie
Wood ----------------- Kelly -------- O'Connor
xxxxx

Toews - Makar
Girard - Manson
xxxxx - xxxxx
Middleton

Blackwood
Wedgwood

RFA
Parssinen
Malinski

UFA
Drouin
Kiviranta
De Haan
Kylington

LTIR
Landeskog

If the cap jumps to $95m that would mean that they have over $16m in cspspace to spend on 2 forwards and 2 Dmen (Or $17m on 3F/2D if Ritchie doesn't make the roster).

If you add Landeskog ($7m) and Drouin ($4m?) you still have $5-6m to spend on 2 Dmen.

Clearly, there is a tonne of cap flexibility for next season. In 2026 Necas is up for a raise, which would get covered by Manson's $4.5m rolling off as he hits UFA.

It's only in 2027 when Makar's deal is up, along with Colton, Mittelstadt, Lehkonen, and Girard, that there will need to be another restructuring. So there's effectively 3 seasons to go all-in before an inevitable retool.

Looking at this, I do think there's validity to the Jones rumour, contingent on Landeskog not returning. If he's done you can re-sign Drouin ($4m?) and still have $12m to spend on 1F + 2D, easily enough to go big with Jones.

How do we make the cap work then?

If we can technically activate Landeskog right now. We can make the cap work sending Wood out.

Especially if Colton and Wood go in the deal. It wouldn't be Manson.

I'm starting to believe they'll actually keep Landeskog out until the playoffs. One thing that stood out in CMac's comments is the mention of contact, and ramping into that knowing he has the ability to not only play, but also protect himself. They're going to put him through it before putting him back in a game.

Does Seth Jones really keep that many more goals out of our own net? And really did CMac say something about we're making this deal because we are worried about one contract so we can bring in another contract that will give us heartburn?

I have a hard time seeing the Hawks retaining much on that deal with so many years left. What kind of assets would have you to give up to get 2m of retention for 4+ years?
No, every metric says he's horrific defensively. Granted, the majority of his career has been cursed by playing on some pretty putrid teams. But that contract is considered the worst in the league for a reason.

Colton + Wood + Malinski + NYR 2nd for Jones 25% retained ($2.375M)
Was going to post this exact same deal.

I know people will point to Malinski not being very good for the past 2-3 weeks but that doesn't change that he was pretty good for a 20-25 game portion of the 48 he's played this season. Such is life for a guy playing in his first full NHL season. The Avs don't have time for him to gain that experience and improve his consistency - Chicago does though.

I think you could deal Manson in a Jones deal to help with the Cap. The Hawks have a bunch of young Dmen so they'd still probably want a vet presence.

Maybe you get a guy like Crevier included in the deal to play on the bottom pair, and then go after a LH bruiser to make up for Manson's physicality.

Hawks have Levshunov and Rinzel coming on the right side so maybe they're open to parting with someone like Crevier.

He can nix 12 teams, and I doubt he'd go for a basement team with some of the last years he has left. It just makes no sense to throw him in. Chicago isn't going to value him like a contender would.

They have a vet presence in Murphy still.

The Avs aren't going to trade Manson.

It's more likely they acquire someone to add to their group and it 'relegates' Manson as their #5D.

After their run and during the off-season, they may decide to trade him and find a cheaper replacement though.

This is my feeling as well, if they deal Manson it’ll be in the off-season. I do think they need to upgrade the top-4 and get an actual shutdown guy that can PK.
