The level of interest they have in exLeafs is beyond comical at this point lol

Who is their new GM?
Checked.
Stan Bowman, hire in July 2024.
He won 3 Cups with Hawks, but Stan Bowman - Wikipedia inherited the majority of the key pieces used for those Cups.

Not sure he has had much impact with the Oilers, other than losing 2 players to the Blues for a 2nd. and 3rd. round picks?

Klingberg, if he can regain form probably helps Oilers.

So you don’t have an answer?
Seriously, if you have to have it explained to you, it's a rather hopeless situation. If you honestly don't know, it's a very sad comment. Allegedly you follow this team... and you can't answer on your own, the good parts to our players games?? Go be difficult elsewhere.

He’s good transitionally, middling offense, poor defense.

They’d be fine with that 7.5M invested elsewhere.

As for Rielly, every season we hear it's impossible to move players with NMC and every year the player(s) get moved. Where there's a will, there's a way. But so far that doesn't apply to this current regime.

It's true, but his family is in the gta, and he likely gave the team a bit of a break on aav to get that full NMC. I'd suspect he'd just tell Leafs management to pound sand of they asked him to waive

On the Amazon series they showed Connor McDavid watching a Leafs game in the middle of the day in his spare time, and apparently that’s how they pro scout.

I'm convinced the team's pro scouts do most of their work just watching HNIC

With the 'JT Miller to NJD' trade talk my dream of a Nemec trade feels dead already

Leafs kicking sand in the Devils face 3 times this season ... motivation.

Trying to figure out a deal here based on Cap and no clause Devils.
Retention on Miller, 6 years, so tough unless Devils really make it worth it to Canucks.

Capspace Devils: $1.9mm

Miller - $8mm
$2mm retention

Dawson - $4mm
Tatar - $1.8mm (Canucks waive?)
Jets' 2nd round pick

My theory is Edmonton’s idea of building a team is to replicate an ex-Leafs fantasy camp for McJesus.

Honestly when I see some of the crazy **** that happens I think that's how most teams evaluate talent 😅

So some want the Leafs to follow the path of trading for players who are not 100% healthy once again.

Foligno Gourde come on down.
Gourde is less than 50% face-offs last 2 years.

Gourde would make sense. He adds speed, tenacity and he's capable... kinda like a better version of Blackwell. Put him on a line with McMann, Pacioretty and/or Domi, seems really interesting. But the idea that a team will fork a first rounder for him seems weird considering he's not been that good the last couple years. But Foligno also had a ton of interest a few years ago and we paid a first for him, so nothing surprises me anymore.

I think he's in Giordano territory, and that'd be fair with retention. Especially if he's been "banged up".

I think Gourde may get the overpayment because of his playoff history and he's got the intangibles that playoff teams like
Those tend to be attributes people pay a premium for

If we're talking a 1st I'd rather go younger and look for term even if it means adding rather than get the older 1 year rental

Nemec to me is a lot like Jiricek. Sometimes the draft pedigree doesn't make up for a player not able to stick to the NHL. I can't say I've seen enough of him to really have an opinion one way or another though.

If there's a way of adding him for a good ol' hockey trade then sure, but just like Jiricek, someone will probably give up a first rounder package to get him. It's just not a good time for us to get a player like that.
Tbh I see Nemec going to the Canucks if it's true they are interested in Miller.

Don't be surprised if the guy gets nothing close to a first rounder either :) Not my choice as an add but if nobody younger is available he does make them better. If Kampf goes the other way its a double win. A lot of the wish list players people have suggested are not even on the market or the price will be steeper than they realize. If the price is right the club can still add a bit more to YG where a premium get would be one and done.

Same age as ROR though and not the same level of talent level but is he even a possibility? And then of course Cozens but do they even take a swing with what those guys would cost?

I doubt Gourde requires a first round pick. He's a decent player, but not first round pick worthy.

Seattle did a pretty good job grabbing Kakko from the Rags. We need a trade like that where a team thinks they’re giving up a Puljujarvi.
I am trying to decide if Sandin for the 28th overall pick fits into that category :) I don't know that the Leafs would be in the market for a young project player who could surprise with their meagre war chest. That might take a year or two to work out and I think they want more a secure immediate return for their assets given the team and Shanny's personal windows. A win would be nice though, for a player that wasn't in hard decline for a change. But it would clean their cupboards out as they don't have the time for a Kappo/Nemec to blossom.
.

I would definitely be interested in something around Cowan for Nemac.

To Toronto: Simon Nemac
To New Jersey: Calle Jarnkrok + Easton Cowan + FLA 2nd Rounder

Not sure if the + after Cowan is enough but that’s a move that makes sense in moving Cowan in.

McCabe - Tanev
Ekman Larsson - Nemac
Rielly - Myers

Pageau (50% retained) for 2nd + Niemela
Hall (50% retained) for a 3rd (has NMC - similar to Tarasenko to FLA last year)

Pageau also has 2 years left. Above average 3C

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Nylander - Tavares - Marner
Hall - Pageau - McMann
Pacioretty - Dewar - Lorentz

If we make a deal with Chi and dont get Murphy I will be a salty little child.

Ideally we shouldn't be dealing our first from next year. The difference between the players that go for a first and the players that go for a 2nd+ is marginal at best.

Discussing with my Nucks friends as I live in Vancouver.

I told them Miller will be going to the Avs for Mittestalt and picks. As Miller's attitude is literally just like Mack.
Looking at the alleged reports of why Miller is being shop around due to locker room stuff with Petey, would the Devils really want someone like that in their locker room?

Would be interesting if MM, Robbie, are heading to Nucks for Miller and Boeser @50% retention. Can just see the meltdown on both boards

I wouldn’t be opposed to Gourde and Dumoulin acquisitions.

Both can provide some important depth and stability to our roster.

Avalanche And Mikko Rantanen Not Making Progress In Extension Discussions

January 17, 2025

Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen has been one of the top-scoring players in the NHL over the past several seasons. His contract is set to expire this summer, making him arguably the top pending UFA in the league. Colorado has been trying to re-sign him but to this point, obviously no deal has been reached yet.

It doesn’t seem like the two sides are particularly close either. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported in a recent segment on Amazon Prime (Twitter link) that the two sides are believed to effectively be at a stalemate in their discussions.

Seravalli reports that the Avs are hoping to keep Rantanen’s price tag below the $12.6MM that Nathan MacKinnon makes. However, Rantanen’s camp is more interested in taking aim at Leon Draisaitl’s record-breaking contract, one that begins next season and carries a $14MM cap charge. Suffice it to say, that’s a pretty significant cap to try to bridge

The 28-year-old had a very strong first half of the season, picking up 25 goals and 37 assists in his first 46 games though a league-high 13 empty-net points help inflate those totals a bit. Nonetheless, Rantanen finds himself on pace to surpass the 100-point mark for the third straight year while surpassing his career high of 105, putting himself in a great position heading into his first time potentially testing the market.
