If you choose to move on from Rielly, the question becomes... who do you replace him with, what is the cost to get said player, and does that actually make us better?

Here are the UFA's available... and there is a good chance some will be extended before we could even get up to bat.

Rielly has his warts, but replacing him with Cody Ceci doesn't make us a better team... what is the plan if he's gone?
What exactly does he do that they would be dying to replace?

St. Louis just added their 1/2 LD in a 3 month span for 2 2nds and it cost them 8.5M.

I'm as down on this team as anybody but I don't think we can afford to burn a contention year

I'm for being smart with our resources and looking for bargains, I'm only keen on giving up good assets (1st rounders, Cowan, Minten, Danford, Grebyonkin etc) for young guys with term left on deals

It’s a question of whether the stars are going to be able to play at a high level consistently or not. The NJ game last night kind of shows you if they’re on, the team is a different animal than if you’re not. If you’re more likely to get the latter, I don’t think we have enough resources to cover all the gaps.

I can't tell if this is a serious question. You are unaware of the Rielly's positives? What he does do for the team? Really?

Can he even be considered an ex-Leaf?
I imagine most think of him as a Dallas Star.
Guys who played for the Leafs....

I don't think you need to cover all the gaps

I think you look at what you need then go and find fits, Schenn didn't cost much but he made a difference

It's doable if you're smart

After so many years of ROR, Schenn, Foligno, Lyubushkin type additions at the deadline, if we are spending significant futures I prefer we get someone who can grow with the team medium to long term. More like what we did with Jake McCabe or what Edmonton did with Ekholm or Florida with a Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart.

For example, a guy like Brock Boeser, but with a new contract.

If I'm doing that I'm thinking 3C, Cates or Frost out of Philly would look pretty good here

People need to calm down when it comes to Rielly. He's had some moments where he's struggled, but he's not garbage, or going anywhere. Perception of him seems to have been warped by his +/-, but he's -12 off the PP and pulling the goalie alone. It's funny, because it's not even really his defensive play dragging him down this year. It's offense, with a combination of being neutered by the system, losing PP time, and some poor conversion luck.

I think it's extremely rare to find teams in the salary cap era these days that are considered "perfect". Every team has holes + areas they'd like to improve on.

Luckily for Toronto, the areas that need improvement are easier to fill. In the short term/long term Toronto needs: Top 9C / Middle 6 winger / Top 4 D-man (Really a #1 d-man, but they won't get one until they start to rebuild again).

There are 3rd line centermans to be had right now, both short(Any UFA/Expiring Deals @ Deadline) and longish term (R.Strome/Pageau). Middle 6 wingers always get traded / are UFAS.

Hardest thing would be a top 4 d-man. Imagine if Toronto didn't miss out on Roy. A Riley/Roy/McCabe/Tanev would have been a solid top 4.

While I agree with you 100%, if Josi was truly available, I'd move Mo in a package for Josi, without thinking twice.

Rielly doesn’t look great. But I am going to hope it’s more new born baby/home life then he goes full Brodie.

I honestly thought Brodie would have bounced back after his personal issues but he hasn’t.

Hopefully mo gets it back.

That has more to do with Josi than Rielly though. And even still, not sure how I'd feel about making the defense even older. Josi is great, but also 34, more expensive, and signed for 3 more years after this this one, before even getting into acquisition cost.

Devils seem like a good fit to go hard after JT Miller. I assume it'll be around Nemec and Dawson... but they need to make more cap room
