Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 Season Edition

From what I've read, that deferred money is included in the Cap, but at the present value, whereas he'll get it at future value.

Been almost 50 years since I did Present Value / Future Value in accounting Texas Instruments T1. So don't ask me for the calculations.

They have them online now, old sport :)

Using a conservative discount rate of say 5%, a million dollars in 2035 is worth $600k today. So I would assume that the league would take that $600k and spread it over the active length of the contract. So if a player signs a 6 year contract with a $1m bonus in 2035, the bonus would add $100k to the cap hit for every year of the 6.

I could be wrong but I think that's how they'd do it.

ROR didn’t want to re-sign in Toronto.. why would he accept a trade back?

We never really found out why. Could be he didn't like Keefe, whereas he won his cup under Berube.

Nashville didn't give him any trade protection. He is an asset Nashville can dangle to the highest bidder.

It looks like he has two years on his deal after this one too. So, he is not a rental. If he were and we knew he would walk again, I wouldn't be interested in him. But, he is locked in at a rate that he would have never accepted to play in Toronto with decent term.

Connor Murphy and 1 of theiir forwards would be interesting. I still think for some reason that Hall 50% retained for a 3rd is going to happen before the deadline.

- 3 assets.... 1st round pick, prospect, ...... the 3rd asset

1st, Minten and Timmins (Kampf or jarnkrok for salary)

Andersson would be a get for Leafs and would really solidify this run for at least another year assuming they can resign Marner and JT . I'd consider Cowan if flames add a prospect like Morin or Poirier

But Plekanec did a difference...

If you hope a trade for a player who will carry the team on their back all playoff long, you will probably wait until you're die. Everyone on the team need to raise their game

Not spectacular doesn't mean that's not making a difference. Player add at TDL last 10

Tarasenko
Barbashev/Hill
Lehkonen/Manson
Coleman/Goodrow
Kempny
Streit/Hainsey
Schultz/ hagelin

Of that list Tarasenko was the only top 6 player or top 3 in D being traded. It was all depht player/ complementary piece and they all had pretty huge impact on their team run. They're all " throwing away pick to look better " like you said but they bring in exactly what they needed and that's worked for them. The fact that didn't worked for leafs in the past doesn't mean they should stop try to become better.
Agree. If we go back to all the TDL deals or even deals happened a week or two before TDL. Cup winners were usually the team that made depth trading and didn’t make a huge splash.
Forgot who but some MGT or coach once said that TDL is about rounding out your team and not about changing your team.
In reality, fans love their teams to trade and load up for top guys but if said team needs top guys to come in and become contenders, that team is really not a contender to begin with.

So that's going to be 2026 1st, Cowan + something else
What's the value of the something else?

A young roster player looking for an opportunity like Robertson? A B prospect like Niemela, A better prospect like Danford, A mid round pick?

I'd try and get away with trading a 1st+ Danford+ 2nd+ Robertson. That's a lot to give up but our D core would be one of the best in the league at that point.

Trouble is the Leafs aren't in the "rounding out your team" category.

We don't need to revisit the well known history of this iteration of the team.

They just aren't close to being a good playoffs team, let alone a Cup contender.

ROR + Schenn is the ideal package. No one wanted them to leave and this time they come with an extra year on their contracts.

Ryan Strome at 3.5M per for this year and next or something along those lines would be my next favourite option. McMann/Patches - Strome - Domi would be real tough to play against.
people need to stop living in the past ...RoR was on the decline in St Lou and Schenn was nothing more than a stylistic 'fit' and a name we remember.
RoR opted not to resign here because he didnt want all the extra pressure you get in Toronto.
He's also not having a great year as a #1C (which he isnt, but the extra ice time should help the stats), and certainly hasnt gotten any faster, and is another LHS.

I doubt Flames will trade with Tre unless Tre pays a premium.
