Out of the available options at C, he is one of the best, provided there's 50% retention. I believe he has an extra year too, so we would have him for next season as well.

I like the idea of adding him. I worry that $2M to $2.5M in retention for two more years pushes him out of reasonable acquisition cost for what he brings.
It seems we are all focused on bringing in another C. Who are the actual candidates?

To me it all comes down to fit and acquisition cost. Having six or seven targets could allow us to get one of these guys at a reasonable price, no?
Toews is a good target based on acquisition cost and potential fit but comes with lots of question marks. O'Rielly could be exactly what we need, but also comes with questions of availability and fit. Laughton could be a nice piece at the right price. Frost could be a good fit also, though not sure if he moves the dial. Gourde and Granlund are interesting but bring different elements. Our playoff issues historically have been secondary scoring. Is Granlund the answer?

Why Risto... he doesn't put up points, and can't defend very well. Is it just because he's big and right handed? Also, Laughton is a winger now, and is also a bit weak defensively.
If we're thinking center and the Flyers I'm thinking Frost, I think the fits better

Had me interested in a deal with Chicago for Ryan Donato and Connor Murphy.
Improves us at Centre and RHD without breaking the bank.
Both could be very good under the radar adds.
Not really expecting points but he skates well, hits, RD, and is decent enough defensively. Laughton & Domi can alternate the #3 spot. The main draw is both players are signed past this season.
Morgan Frosts agent is Darren Ferris, who’s an RFA at the end of the year.
Negotiating two top six contracts with him in one off-season sure sounds fun.

I agree on his next deal—maybe even a three-year bridge? He seems like an intriguing option for the Leafs.
From what I’ve read, Frost hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, and at 25 years old, you have to wonder if his development has stalled under Tortorella. I think there’s a legitimate argument that he’d benefit from a defined role in a structured system, especially on the third line with consistent and quality linemates. That kind of stability could help unlock his potential.
The big question is always the cost to acquire him. Nick Robertson, for example, is three years younger (someone can confirm), and he still has significant upside. Is Robertson enough on his own, or would the Flyers want more, like a B-level prospect or a mid-round pick?
There’s something really appealing about the idea of locking in our second and third-line centers for the next couple of years with Tavares and Frost. If Frost flourishes here, it’s a huge win. And if not, his next contract likely wouldn’t be a cap killer. It feels like a low-risk, high-reward kind of move.

If Montreal continues to cling to a WC spot, or fight for one, I think they'll keep their players and go for it. It's not like they lack picks anyway.
I like Frost but he doesn't check enough boxes. He's not a PKer or a great faceoff player or physical. He would add speed and skill but on the Leafs, he won't get nearly as much ice time. I think we'd be much better off with a heavy PK center that can chip in and provide some physicality.
The Leafs would probably like to get Murphy and Dickinson but it's way too much salary and it would take a lot to get done. Chicago won't retain without a big return with good reason.
Dubas loved to do one stop shop additions. I'm not sure Treliving is of the same mind. I think they need to focus on the best center they can add for the value, and look at efficient depth options if they want to bolster their D. I'm not sure they need to get a big time add there.

The other "problem" with Frost, is that he isn't exactly your typical 3rd line centre who's a hard-nosed, strong defensively, tough to play against player.
You could make the arguement that between Frost vs Domi as the #3 centre, you're kind of at a wash as they are similar players in a way.

Could be a good long term replacement for Kampf in that 3/4C role. Solid defensively, good for 10+ goals. Shouldn’t cost as much as Laughton/Frost both in terms of assets and cap.
A bit of tunnel vision offensively, but had a decent enough shot that he could be a good offensive contributor on a line he’s not driving.

Yeah, that is a problem for what we are trying to build here. Maybe go the rental route this year and see what Minten or a UFA or off-season trade can bring.
