There is a fundamental difference however.
Frontloaded money is still all paid in the contract years/term. This money is almost a decade later and paid over 10 years. Also the 900k each year allegedly doesn’t count against the cap in those 10 years, yet they are saving like 1.5m per year of the 3 year deal so how is that money being captured in terms of the 50/50?

The Toronto Maple Leafs could bring back an old face as they try to shore up their defensive depth at a cheap cost according to Elliotte Friedman.
As the days tick away towards not only the trade deadline but also the playoffs, teams are starting to get the ball rolling when it comes to making sure they have the best pieces possible going forward.
But if Brad Treliving wanted to add to his defensive depth without sacrificing any assets, he could look to a former defenseman to fill those gaps who has gotten himself healthier than he was the first time around.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs may be in line to bring back John Klingberg into the fold as he's gotten a lot healthier and looks to make a late season comeback.
"Who knows, Klingberg is about 3 weeks away from trying to come back. Maybe they go for him again. He's a lot healthier now - you never know."
It's an interesting piece of information that could lead Toronto to making more moves based on if they bring him back.
Klingberg hasn't been good for years. Maybe it's because of the injuries, but it's probably he's just cooked.
Crouse isn't having a particularly good year, but he's also a favourite of the organization. They are also only three points out of a playoff spot at the moment, and not likely to be sellers, unless they really fall off. They've played a disproportionate number of road games 16-23... so they could go on a run, and get themselves back in it. I'd have interest in McBain, who up until this year was a C, who has more points than Crouse, can play C, is more physical in everyway, and has a cheaper contract.. plus is a Toronto boy.
Nobody in the org wants to get rid of Rielly at this point. He has the same number of goals, as all of the other D combined, on a team that needs more offense from it's D. Sure, he has his struggles in the D zone, and always has.. but typically has made up for it, and is one of the few players who is consistently better in the playoffs. There is no chance he's getting moved.

Noting Olivier is likely to extend with Columbus, they really like him, and the dollars being thrown around are ridiculous, that we want no part of. I really like what he brings, but he's not worth this, or anything close. If Columbus moves him, it's because the contract demands are ridiculous.

Giordano also hasn't officially retired yet. If you're desperate enough, maybe could be a decent depth guy in a pinch.

They already did it with McCabe, although probably not at the fullest extent.
It funny how this just wasn’t a thing until it was. And now everyone is doing it.
How did it take this many years into this CBA for teams to really figure it out and how weren’t we the ones to do it with Pridham?

Probably not something ever thought possible maybe until Ohtani did it with the Dodgers, and then teams and players went like... woah. Very weird teams/players didn't do this before though.

I would get it if Anaheim were signing Mikko Rantanen in free agency and needed to defer money to land their big fish. But if they need to tap dance like Fred Astaire to make Frankie Vatrano work… they might be going the way of the Oakland Athletics.

It sounds like there is financial benefit to the player.
Taxation in California (highest) where he'd be getting the money, compared to taxation in other states.
This is mentioned correct? So this accountants can make taxation go away is only partially correct.
Perhaps he liked his time in Florida, so rather than have all his income taxed in California retiring to Florida for the deferred amount paying no income tax. Looks like he married while playing in Florida. Complete speculation ...

Also players just didn't want to be the first to do it esp NHL players.
But now, they see literally the best and most special Baseball player did it and it makes it normal.
If it is true that caphit is only 75%, thats a great way for teams like the Leafs to take advantage.
Having said that, I still think paying bitcoins to players is the way to go, lol.
Would love Scott Laughton, but I think we have to be careful. He’s the type of player who’s not necessarily a natural center. He’s much suited on the wing than he is up the middle.

Not sure Leafs could have used him if he made it that far?
I thought a Robertson for Kaliyev trade made sense for both teams in the offseason
Swap a couple of young guys in the same situation and give them a new opportunity
It's to late now though, I'd like to see Steeves get a good run but there's no place open for him to play currently and Kaliyev would be in the same position

Made a lot of sense to me too. But glad Robertson and the Leafs pushed through their differences.
I do hope Steeves gets another good shot with the Leafs this season.
He's got talent, he just needs somebody to play with that isn't our 4th line

Kampf currently having the least amount of average icetime since his rookie year. If he's not moved at the tdl, he's likely gone this summer.
He's been miscast
He's a defensive specialist who needs a specific type of winger to be successful (a puck transporter like Engvall) and if he doesn't have that puck carrier or you ask him to bang and crash he's just not suited to it
I wasn't a fan of his signing at the time but the way they have been using him is pure insanity
The accountants could make the difference go away was always wrong.
Basically instead of money in your pocket today in Dallas/tampa etc. you had to try to put it a souped up RRSP. Lock your money in. And move somewhere like Florida to collect, in little increments over time.
Even then it didn’t actually add up. But it helped. If you were willing to lock your money up until retirement and trickle it out.
