Is that the max you can defer, 50%?
The value of the 3x6M contract to Vatrano is reduced to something like 3x4.5M or less given the timing of payouts. But he has a tax evasion plan to recoup some of that loss - maybe half? Overall he's taking a hit.

No idea? But I guess that's enough money for 10 years regardless.
Sure, but a good chunk less than if another team was willing to give him 3x6M.
Just pointing it out before the Marner ideas start flowing. The money men on either side will be negotiating future value, so there are limits on what we would be able to do with deferals as the player suffers. The tax situation allowed them to get more agressive than the previous deferal deals, which is likely not available with Mitch.

Flyers have had interest in Nick Robertson in the past according to reports. Wonder if there is a deal to be had there surrounding Laughton
Could be a template for JT
Basically Vatrano just signed the contract that Leafs would offer JT. 3x6mil but cap hit is 4.5mil

Yeah that would make a lot of sense for him. Defer money to set him up after retirement even more. Leafs can fit him in easier to keep competing for the next 3-5 years. It makes too much sense.
Especially when he already has the CRA issue

As the days tick away towards not only the trade deadline but also the playoffs, teams are starting to get the ball rolling when it comes to making sure they have the best pieces possible going forward.
But if Brad Treliving wanted to add to his defensive depth without sacrificing any assets, he could look to a former defenseman to fill those gaps who has gotten himself healthier than he was the first time around.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs may be in line to bring back John Klingberg into the fold as he's gotten a lot healthier and looks to make a late season comeback.
"Who knows, Klingberg is about 3 weeks away from trying to come back. Maybe they go for him again. He's a lot healthier now - you never know."
It's an interesting piece of information that could lead Toronto to making more moves based on if they bring him back.

Why not, we saw him played like 3 game healthy so pretty hard to make an opinion on him...At minimum ( or close salary), What's leafs really have to lose?!?!
I don’t understand how if a player can’t sign a deal over 8 years why would they be able to defer salary and pay it out over 13 years with almost a decade between the contracts playing years and the last 10 he’ll be paid in.
Can’t wait for the lockout coming due to this kind of contract

Perhaps the most perplexing part of this is Anaheim had absolutely no reason to make this deal. They suck, have a ton of cap and won’t be good in the next 3 years most likely either

Not sure entirely sure, but seems like it's simply to give teams more flexibility in managing the cap. It's really not different than frontloading contracts. In both cases, they are manipulating the value of the contract to the player.
When frontloading, you make the contract more valuable to the player by providing money up front to lower the price point to attract talent you otherwise couldn't fit under the cap. When deferring, you make the contract more valuable by paying out a higher price point, and again ease your cap burden.
The franchise needs financial strength to do both, so I'm not sure why Leafs were late to the game.
Anaheim has had an internal cap over the years, I don't think they have a ton of cash on hand
I'd imagine spreading out the payments on that deal look pretty good to them financially
Hell maybe the owners sell the team at some point and the new guys have to pay out the remainder of the deal
There's some definite benefits financially
It would be good for cash flow if they are really in that bad shape but it looks to me like Vatrano agreed to a bad deal, so that may have played a role.
The remainder of the deal would be treated as debt and subtracted from the price paid by a new owner.
To Syphers point, manipulating the cap signals they plan to need it in the next three years. Very different than Chicago's approach, but let's see what they got!
