Agreed, kinda reminds me of when the Avs inserted Ryan O'Reilly into the lineup after a VERY short CHL career where he scored less than a PPG in the OHL. Why? Because he was smart and physically ready, even if he didn't dominate the CHL.

O'Reilly himself could've maybe benefited from another year or 2 in the OHL but he was needed by Colorado at the time, kinda like Minten, and then went on to eventually be a captain and Stanley Cup champion, he did all right for himself.

If the Leafs were getting any production from Robertson/Holmberg/Domi ... and I mean, ANY production, then I'd be less anxious to be giving Minten a shot on the 3rd line, but he's scoring goals, he's making himself visible out there on the forcheck and crashing the net. No way he should be coming out of the lineup the way he's going

When Knies step in 2023 it was clear he would stay with NHL club because he's already had the level to be there whatever if he was playing in a 3 or 4th line.

Why it should be different with Minten if he's already prove he's the best option?

Would definitely prefer a 6-8 year range from the teams pov

I would not be opposed to 3 years to keep his av down during the remainder of the Matthews contract and really go for it. I'm definitely getting a "windows are finite and followed by a down cycle" vibe from the way this team is being constructed, no point half assing that (on the cap side, still need to maintain some semblance of a prospect pipeline)

Go all out and get Kadri and Frederic with retention, obviously with salary leaving(Kampf) and some LTIR.

Knies Matthews Nylander
McMann Tavares Marner
Frederic Kadri Domi
Patches Dewar Lorentz

Hypothetically.. Say Minten solidifies himself and impresses the rest of the season:

Kampf
Robertson
2nd (24)

For

Olivier
Kuraly
4th (24)

Kampf is fine, but Kuraly is more physical and if he doesn’t fit we’re not tied to him past this season. Ideally Kampf would be willing to go there for more opportunity.

I would love Frederic, I don’t see a trade happening between Boston and Toronto nor do I see something Boston would really want from Toronto that’s realistic for Frederic. I would love to see an “identity” third line and the sound of a line of McMann - Domi - Frederic sounds like a pain in the ass to play against.

If Toronto moving their 2nd + robertson i prefer for someone who will really make a difference ( will have a lot of better option)... not 2 4th line player who will change absolutly nothing to the team and bring anything more than the guy already there...

Seriously i don't understand the buzz about Olivier. Hes big and physical... okay and...better keep the pick unstead waste it on 4th line player who will have a limited impact in playoff

I get that.. This is more about getting out of the Kampf contract while getting bigger and stronger, assuming Minten shows he’s ready.

Kampf is not a guy whos making leafs worst... okay his contract and maybe 500-600k too high but not the end of the world.

Olivier and Kuraly don't have more value than a 5th-6th round pick... a 4th if we really want to be extremely generous...

Is Roman Josi someone we ought to be interested in? Signed for 4 more years and is about Tavares age. Nashville is in the basement.

I think they tweak their line-up.

I'd be surprised if they'd do another long term retention.

Coach firing probably happens first.

Stamkos has a NMC, but maybe he'd go to Buffalo (snicker), then Tuch to Toronto, and Kampf and Robertson to Nashville (okay throw in Holmberg).

You know, just once I want a great, home grown player to sign for the max year range post-ELC. We have to be the only team that continually gets dunked on in this regard, and it's infuriating.

The second Matthews signed that contract, you just knew players were going to start signing shorter term contracts knowing that the salary cap is going up every year and they want to maximize their income while playing. To be honest, I don't really blame them. The NHL is a joke when it comes to players salaries compared to the other big 4 sports. When a bench player in the NBA makes more then the highest paid player in the NHL, you know there's a problem.

The cap is about to start rising dramatically, finally. I get why guys don't want to lock in now and miss the increases that come with the rising cap.

I am also ok with our top players betting on themselves and playing for next deals and not just riding it out.

If course we would like a bunch of 8 years x $8M for our stars but that is not realistic.

Why are we talking about guys like Olivier, Kurely and Frederic?

Our problem in the playoffs isn't physicality, it's scoring

So we should be after more scoring not bottom 6 bangers, let's solve the problem for a change

Noting, Olivier would be 5th in goals scored on the Leafs right now. Maybe obtaining bottom six bangers, who can score at a better rate than the guys we have now is something we should strive for.

1. Calgary doesn’t want to trade with us.
2. There is a salary cap, and we couldn’t fit him in.
3. We don’t really have the assets to trade for him, or at least shouldn’t be moving Minten/Cowan and a first.
4. Shanahan and co shipped him out after having years of problems with him. Zero chance they want him back.
