Benoit is extremely mobile for a defensive defencemen.

His top skating speed and speed bursts over 20mph are both average or better for the position.

He has his shortcomings but he's definitely not some slow slug and has played some pretty decent hockey recently.
A zero offensively let’s hope his defence doesn’t slip again

Really depends on how he recovers from another lower body injury at this stage of his career. Internal competition never hurts.
Internal competition never hurts, but having excess players you don't really need, and wasting assets on them isn't the way to go.

We've got months to go before the trade deadline, so plenty of time to determine who is healthy, who can stay healthy and what our main need will be. I like getting things done well before the deadline, but I'd still prefer to wait some and see what we actually need.

This is no knock on Minten but I don’t think he’s at the level to be a third line centre on a Stanley Cup contender, YET.

What I do already know is that he’s more than capable in replacing Kampf as the fourth line centre and saving us almost 1.6 million towards our salary cap.

It would be a shrewd but very unlikely way of tweaking the lineup. Teams don't tend to make those kind of changes within the season. But the Canes dumping Bunting to get Guentzel was very shrewd, even if it didn't work out.

If the Leafs did remove Kampf one way or another, keep Jarnkrok and Hakanpaa on LTIR... they would have 4.6M of cap space with a 23 player roster. If you trade Robertson or Holmberg as part of deal to add upfront, you can add a 5.5M ish player. This is also with 100k dead cap space from Benning.

Then the question is do you throw the kitchen sink trying to get one very good player or try to get multiple players

Hoping they at some point flip Holmberg and a pick for B Tanev @ 50%, think he plays the kind of game Berube asks for and provide some depth scoring.

Robertson - Domi - Tanev could be a pesky line. Or Domi - Minten - Tanev.

So when is US Thanksgiving?

Looking forward to analyzing the slew of trades.

It was last Thursday

If years of playing NHL games taught me anything, I don’t know why GMs find winning so hard. Just trade every player and asset in the system necessary to amass 6 elite players, play them 60 mins a game each and go 98-0

That, and turn off penalties

The quantity is more than good enough. We need a good addition and to make it count.

I want some term to

If we're giving up assets it's time to sort out the 3C position medium to long term

And before I get whinged at you can still play Minten at the NHL level if you want, Tavares isn't exactly young and Kampf is allergic to scoring

They had a few months to give him a good look.. see how he manages the grind

He can also play as 4C if they trade for an established 3C it things come down to it.

Biggest need is still going to be a new play driver for the bottom six, maybe that becomes a winger but I'd still be more comfortable with that person being a centre

My preferred strategy back in the day was to play 20 games or so, and then check the point boards. Rookies near the top? Trade for them; since the player numbers are only updated at the end of the year, you can generally get good scoring rookies for a 5th or 6th rounder because the AI is dumb.

Minten what he created offensively is because hes driving the net and pretty high IQ not because of his skill set.

Right now he's showing he's smart enough to play in NHL. hes at the right place at the right time of doing his think in the NHL level.

I don't think in his case playingg pp time against worst matchup will have more impact than playing at top speed in the NHL and learn from it. Its helpful when the play going too fast for you and give you a chance to adapt ay AHL level. But its not thw case here, Minten see the play pretty well and NHL don't look too fast at all for him

If Toronto find a better option but right now, no reason to remove him of line up
Agreed, kinda reminds me of when the Avs inserted Ryan O'Reilly into the lineup after a VERY short CHL career where he scored less than a PPG in the OHL. Why? Because he was smart and physically ready, even if he didn't dominate the CHL.

O'Reilly himself could've maybe benefited from another year or 2 in the OHL but he was needed by Colorado at the time, kinda like Minten, and then went on to eventually be a captain and Stanley Cup champion, he did all right for himself.

If the Leafs were getting any production from Robertson/Holmberg/Domi ... and I mean, ANY production, then I'd be less anxious to be giving Minten a shot on the 3rd line, but he's scoring goals, he's making himself visible out there on the forcheck and crashing the net. No way he should be coming out of the lineup the way he's going
