Leafs centers Domi, Kampf and Holmberg have combined for 0 goals in 51 games.
I'll repeat this:
Leafs centers Domi, Kampf and Holmberg have combined for 0 goals in 51 games.
If he's ready and grabs the spot, great, but that's how it needs to happen. If we rush him I don't see any reason why we should expect anything different from his early season look last year, and his name added to a center list with no goals. We're in win now mode, we need a solution to the problem. Throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks isn't good enough, not when you can go acquire what you need, someone with the experience and proven ability to get the job we need done.

As long as it isn't a 1 year rental that further deletes the future of the team, for an ill conceived go for it.

Beautiful B.C.
I'm just going to float a pretty stupid idea out, that I have had for no particular reason, as a potential 3C/ super longshot 2C/ super risk just because.

Finding a way to get Sean Couturier at 50% makes him less than $4 million for the next 4 seasons, or at 75% for under $2 milly.

Why? Just straight up a guess at another potential Sean Monahan comeback in a new team, except instead of waiting for him to break out on another team ala Montreal (who traded a 1st to aqcuire him as a cap dump and got a 1st for him from Winnipeg when he left).

The upside being we could potentially rehabilitate Couts into a stud centerman and not have to pay premium upside assets.

Downside being he has 4 more years and injury prone history.... but he played 74 last year (16 of 17 this year) and I question if his numbers can rebound if he gets away from Torts and injected with some different talent and responsibility but if it doesn't he is still always been regarded as an incredibly smart and efficient defensive forward.

Whats the cost? Would he be available? Would Philly be dumb enough to max retain? Who knows haha, just something dumb I thought up!

I don't see it.
Flyers maybe trade him, but not retain for another 5 years, unless say $1mm?
Or Torts runs out his welcome, and they bring in a clear slate coach to take over.

Even being creative, I don't see how you make it work, Domi, Kampf, Jarnkrok, retention 1mm?

And of course the assets Cowan+?+?

I'd say it's unlikely for any reasonable cost.

Dubas never built up our center position.
Bennett
Strome
Nick Paul
I understand Bennett, at the time everyone would have been pissed if Dubas paid a 1st + for an underachieving Bennett. He just took off in Florida. Paul would have been nice too, but two rivals especially Toronto and Ottawa never see a trade between the two for the most part. Strome apparently had interest in coming to Toronto as a UFA.

I wonder how much Gourde has left in the tank.. might be a valuable pickup

Dvorak might be ok but he doesn’t have much of a playoff track record.

Nelson would be good if the Isles sell

It would have to be at 50% retention (if not more with a 3rd team) and I'm not sure I would give up more than the Eller trade. Same thing goes for Dvorak.

Nelson would be fantastic but it'll be hard to acquire him with retention and without our first.

Reaves will be suspended for awhile and Matthews seem out for a little longer, Domi is also not 100%, so might be a good time to test Minten and other options if needed.

It’s only been 4 games in the AHL but Minten has definitely surprised coming off an injury that made him miss training camp. If he can keep this up around the 15 game mark, would be hard not to call him up before trading assets for a 3C…

Knies - Matthews - Domi
McMann - Tavares - Marner
Pacioretty/Robertson - Minten - Nylander
Lorentz - Kampf - Holmberg
Reaves

These are the lines I’d like to see as well.

If Minten proves capable at C, acquiring a 3rd line LW is also cheaper/easier than trying to find a C in a thin market. With lines 1 and 2 being defensively responsible as well, that 3rd line can really be made to be a depth scoring line so they can be a bit more flexible on the player they acquire.

Too bad he’s on a division rival, but pending UFA Trent Frederic would be perfect

I really wanted to buy low on him, his price tag was 2 2nds.

Robertson may actually proove useful on a line with Minten and Nylander.

I would try to up his value and deal him in the summer if they think Cowan or Grebs is going to take that spot next year.
