Future considerations would be sufficient for me, it's win-win.

We have 2 AHL guys that need the minutes and he gets a chance to play NHL games.

My worry is the playoffs, Marlies are a playoff team as well and the Leafs will need at least 3 goalies depending on our health. I'd much rather Hildeby and AA playing in the AHL playoffs gaining that experience than riding 3rd seat with us in the playoffs where Murray would absolutely be comfortable doing that.

That being said, depending on injuries obviously, maybe being backup in the NHL would be better experience for one of the younger guys than being with the Marlies and still give us quality goaltending in the NHL which is obviously the most important factor to consider.

I think between Stolarz and Woll, we're fine, if one goes down, I guess Hildeby comes up but my expectations would be low if it got that point.

Ahkyamatov can hold it down in the AHL at that point and Peksa could back him up.

A 3C with an ability to score is a must. Only time Toronto looked good in the playoffs and advanced was when ROR was acquired. Maybe Bunting would be the wrong target, but I believe we are in need of another top 9 winger that can score as well. Toronto needs to find a way to get creative and add.

There's a hole in the lineup in top 6/9 winger spot in my opinion. You have Knies/Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander, after that to play in the top 6 you have one of: Domi/McMann/Patches/Robertson. To play top 6 and Top 9, neither of those players right now have been very good through 18 games this year.

I wouldn't get too worked up about the third line wingers at this point.

We need a 3C... sure. The sooner we get one, the better.. no waiting until the deadline on this one. The top six when everyone is healthy, is Knies Matthews Marner Tavares Nylander Patches.

Domi, McMann, Robertson, Steeves, Grebenkin can fight it out for the remaining two Wing spots on the third line. Well.... really it's everyone but Domi fighting for one spot. I would wait a bit and see if a new C, can make that line work, with one of those players...

I'd swap out Reaves and Kampf, for Olivier and Acciari... but I don't think Kampf gets moved off the roster.

Some C's that might be available this year;

Brock Nelson, Acciari, Laughton, Ryan Strome, Granlund, Kunin, Gourde, Sissons, Dickinson, Pageualt, Dvorak, Evans.... At least, that's who I see might be available.

I like Laughton, but he doesn't bring as much scoring as someone like Granlund might... but Laughton is extended to next year, and Granlund is likely a pure rental for us.

I wish we signed Dylan Strome when Chicago didn’t qualify him. Looks like he found his game in Washington.

If Trotz is looking at a rebuild, any interest?

Seems like a guy with some potential who is flying under the radar.

Looking at potentially available centers I'd probably try for Dvorak

I think he may end up being the best mixture of ability and acquisition cost

He's not a complete plug, give him a couple of decent wingers and he may score at a 30-40 point pace as our 3C

I think Dvorak is someone who would definitely benefit from a change of scenery. I wouldn’t be against him at 50% retained and the cost to acquire being low. Maybe Holmberg for Dvorak (50% retained) straight up?

One of the few "stars" of that Knights team that didn't hit target.

Evan Bouchard (who was 16) is cashing in this year.

I don't see them retaining 50% for 1 more year on Bunting without a good return, but I would be interested in some capacity. Acciari and O'Connor fit a lot.

Pettersson would be a sneaky good target but we're loaded with LHD.

The Leafs tried winning a playoff series with Matthews at something less than healthy, and it didn’t work out.

Provided Toronto doesn’t hit the skids, there are positives to be gained by this situation. John Tavares lived one on Wednesday. All successful teams point back to strength gained by overcoming adversity along the way.

Perhaps most important is what GM Brad Treliving learns about his group before the trade deadline: Centre depth is a serious issue.

Whether it’s Matthews or someone else, surely Treliving realizes his roster would have a hard time winning one round, let alone four, with an injury in middle ice.

The third line is a struggling hodgepodge of forwards who can’t score, and Max Domi’s latest trial as a top-six pivot has been rough.

Domi has gone 12 games without a point and 23 without a goal. This despite getting shifts with the Leafs’ dynamic playmakers. (To be fair, Domi has missed consecutive practices due to “maintenance”; he’s battling something other than confidence right now.)

The Capitals already snatched one middle-six centre off the trade market.

Treliving, surely, has begun looking at potential rental options such as Brock Nelson (easily the best choice) out of New York or Mikael Granlund in San Jose. Anaheim’s Frank Vatrano, perhaps? Utah’s Nick Bjugstad? Montreal’s Jake Evans?

The class isn’t exactly flush with options, so the GM will entertain trading for a centre with term. Those are more expensive.

But one thing is becoming increasingly clear as Matthews heals: A 3C solution for the Maple Leafs must come from outside.

It might be the only deadline acquisition we need. We have good depth on D, in goal, scorers we can spread for more balanced scoring. But we definitely need a two way 3c.

Someone mentioned maybe that could be Minten. Best case scenario is that he tears up the Ahl, gets a call up and cements the spot. But that is too optimistic, as much as I would love it.

I don’t usually like big deadline deals for rentals, but if it’s just a depth guy similar to EDM picking up Henrique last year, I think it makes sense.

I don’t think they’ll wait until the deadline. Before the Christmas freeze would be nice

Dvorak and Armia off of Montreal would probably bolster things.
