Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

I don’t understand wanting to trade Knies and especially for defense. We CANNOT SCORE in the playoffs and he’s been one of our best playoff goal scorers the last two seasons.
Yeah, but D is a more important position that the Leafs continue to not address adequately.

I mean, I go deeper and say, IMO, part of the reason this club is on a near 60-year drought is that they've only had 2 number #1 Dmen in that time.

I am also mildly worried that Knies' offence is being inflated due to Marner. I like him, but you got to give to get as well.

I can't imagine any team could match an offer like that.

Well I think they’ll get similar offers from Dallas and LA. I don’t think LA is giving up Byfield to get him. Maybe Moore plus a similar package of their best assets.

Dallas probably Mavrik Borque plus their best assets

Umm there numbers are very similar this year....O.Power is already on his level brother
Owen Power was amazing playing for Team Canada in the 4 Nations. Oh wait, that was Parakyo that was good playing for Team Canada.
Dahlin had similar stats as Hedman, and pretty much most if not all playoffs teams will choose Hedman over Dahlin in a playoffs run.

Come on, something stats are deceiving.

Knies is pretty untouchable for me. He plays playoff style hockey and goal scoring power forwards are borderline unicorns.

Fair deal.

And I thought he is coming back, lol

Friedman throwing Toronto in there for clicks.

He probably goes to LA for Clarke + Foegle or something

Gives Carolina a young upside d-man to replace Orlov or Burns next year.
They already have Nishkinin and Morrow

Canes have maybe the worst Center depth EVER for a team as hoghly regarded as them

Aho --> top 20C (11 to 18 range imo)
KK --> 4th line C or meh 3C
Staal --> Defensive 4C or meh 3C overall
Roslovic --> 3C at best

If they deal Rantanen they need a Center coming back

..

Agreed. Just win one cup and nobody will give a shit for a decade, we will always have that moment.
The impact a Leafs cup would have on the city, and across Canada in general, would be unlike any Cup win the NHL would have seen in any of our lifetimes. It would make the Raptors win look like a slow Tuesday.

In the realm of professional sporting events, the impact would be borderline limitless. But hope is a dangerous thing...hope can drive a man insane.

I like the idea of Schenn because he meshed really well with Rielly a couple years ago. Rielly needs as much help as we can get him.
I don't think he's that player anymore.
Also, it's Luke Schenn. He's lovable.
Still remember how mishandled he was when he was first drafted here and it is still annoying.

I would say that if Leafs makes the final, the league will see record breaking viewership numbers, social medias buzz and trends and revenues unseen by any other Cup winners.
I would even say that Leafs winning the Cup will cause another 1-2mil jump in the Salary Cap.

A crazy move that wont ever happen but would be interesting in a fantasy setting

Trade 1:

Leafs get Mikko Rantanen (extend him this summer to 12.5M x 8) for Easton cowan + Ben Danford + 2026 qst + 2027 1st + Kampf/Calle Jarkrok

Futures out: Cowan, Danford, 2 1sts

Trade 2:

Sabres get: Matthew Knies

Leafs get: 1 of Quinn/Kulich/Benson + 1 of Ostlund/Rosen/Helineus + 2026 1st

You take the cost to extend Knies (6-7M) and allocate it to Rantanen to contend heavy next 3-4 years

Then you add 2 NHL ready/NHL player ELC/low cost high upside assets from the Sabres and a 1st.

2025 -2026 Team

Rantanen - Matthews - Marner

1 of Kulich/Quinn/Benson - JT - Nylander

McMann - 1 of Ostlund/Rosen/Helieus - Domi

XXX - Minten - Robertson

We do have the cap and we do have the assets. Rantanen is a 4.6M player right now after retention. It would be very much close to the all-in move though, while not bolstering any position of need.

I don't understand the thought process of Carolina at all in this.
If they take Domi back sure.

Nothing in hockey could possibly compare. The Red Sox winning in 2004 and the Cubs winning in 2016 are along the right track, but America and Canada are not comparable for a lot of reasons.

I will say that you could give every player on the team retirement contracts and I wouldn't even slightly care...and I'm not even a good fan. I went years barely watching this team and pretending I didn't even care (which was a total lie) because of some stuff going on in my personal situation. I am not Canadian. I have never lived in Canada. I've been to Ontario only a few times in my life. Despite all these factors I'd still cry like a baby if they ever won...I can't even begin to imagine what the loyal, good fans would do. Pandemonium.

Knies won’t be involved, I believe it was CJ who asked a GM if Carolina would get a player similar value of Necas back and the answer was no.

Probably looking at a top prospect and roster player back, maybe a pick.

Probably Cowan + Robertson/McMann + a pick. Knies would not be moved for a rental
There's only a handful of teams with the assets to pull off a Rantanen deal now. Carolina has little leverage; they blew their load on him and now they're just hoping to recoup assets. They're not going to get a return remotely close to what they paid.
