Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

If both Marchessault and ROR comes, unless Leafs win the Cup or Cup Finals run or JT is unbelievable in all playoffs games. JT is as good as gone unless he takes a deal where his caphit is 4.5mil(can be after deferring).

Which means Leafs will have JT(4.5mil), ROR(2.15mil-50% retention), and Marchessault(2.75mil-50% retention), that’s 9.4mil on three very solid players for the next few years. Compare JT being at 11mil over the past 7 years.
The issue for me is having JT in the first place. It is likely time to move on.

I hear people saying there are less players available now. Also true, fewer buyers.
If you are in the market for a D and a center with term the deals so far mean nothing. I like Gourde somewhat and Bjorkstrand is interesting if you need a winger but not at close to that cost. You would figure they had learned from Jeannot.

Dreger thinks were all a bunch of morons.

Andy Strickland tweeted 'similar player with similar term' would be going back to St Louis in a Brayden Schenn trade. Only player that kind of fits the bill in Toronto is Morgan Rielly.
I am good for a Reilly for Parayko type of 1 for 1 deal, lol.

Personally, I think Skinner and Kane will be going to the Blues for Binnington and Schenn.

The issue for me is having JT in the first place. It is likely time to move on.
I believe that too unless something dramatic happens in the playoffs.

What was the issue with Keefe then?

Yeah, even still, too much dye has already been cast for this group.

If ROR is in to replace him for the next few seasons, sure.
We think it is an issue with Keefe.
I am paraphrasing here, ROR mentioned in an interview that the team could had played differently against the Panthers but nobody listened to his suggestions….

I forget if it was Kyper who said it, but ROR was given very little PP time from Keefe. The big 5 were constantly deployed with poor results. He felt like he wasn't given much opportunity on offensive special teams essentially.

You can argue we are stuck in the middle as a contending team.
If they think they can contend which we know they do, than be aggressive. If they don't, than why are we paying 4 guys double digits? What some fans are suggesting we do in waiting is what teams in wild card spots do. We are first in the division with the best goaltending this core has had. What if Matthews returns to form next year, but goaltending falls apart? Do we say again it doesn't make sense to make a big because of it. Lets wait til next season.

I agree, and I think it's why we need to be aggressive.

However, I also understand the hesitance. This core hasn't given even a lick of evidence they have what it takes.

The best choice is likely trade for people who can contribute for a few years. More McCabes, less RoRs (though it sounds like he might have stuck around if they fired the coaching staff when they should have).

Why is no one talking about San Jose as a possible team to target?

Let’s get Kunin (retained) and Ferraro (retained)

Offer up Robertson + Jarnkrok/Domi + 1st in 27 + Niemela

Then go get B.Tanev (retained) for Dewar + 4th in 27

Lastly acquire L.Schenn (retained) + 5th in 25 for 3rd in 25 + C.Timmins

Thats a lot of retention. Start with the Tampa/Kraken deal and the spend goes up from there. I am not against cleaning out the cupboard for players with at least some term but they need a D much worse than another finesse winger who doesn't produce at even strength. I know he is better out of that spot but he has 5 years left.

This is exactly what we need

Florida and Tampa will be a war no matter who we play

We are one and done how soft we are right now

Am I the only one who thinks Schenn is being overrated?

He's not even remotely as good as the attention he's getting. If they end up overpaying for him, it will be a massive fail.
His pp60 the last 2 years is 1.68 and 1.51 and no, he wasn't injured. Their Cup winning year he was 8th in playoff scoring behind, among others, Tyler Bozak ,so its hard to think he was some kind of a playoff lion. O'Reilly had double the points. It depends on how bad you think the Blues are because 2 years ago he was an effective top 6 producer. If the weak team/coach are the issue that guy could still be there. But you are risking 3 more years, and to me, those fallen angels are the kinds of guys you rent. You don't trade good value for term if the asset is 33 years old and in real need of a rebound.

That's one trade no one has given thought too.....but how many teams can Tavares give us?

Maybe we can work a deal with New Jersey & a third team, now that Hughes is out, could they be interested in John?

If we moved Tavares, Reaves, Dewar, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Myers & Mermis that would give us 15M with Tanev coming back.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Marchessault-Stamkos-Nylander
McMann-O'Reilly-Tanev
Domi-Lorentz-Robertson
Pacioretty-Holmberg-Steeves

Rielly-Murphy
McCabe-Tanev
Ekmam-Larsson-Schenn
Benoit-Hakanpaa

Stamkos vs Tavares
Marchessault vs Jarnkrok
O'Reilly vs Kampf
Tanev vs Dewar
Schenn vs Myers
Murphy vs Timmins
Hakanpaa vs Mermis

This would give us more depth vs Florida & Tampa Bay....🤣can we find a way to get Nashville in on this deal for Stamkos retained?

I'd be willing to throw in more prospects or picks to get this deal done.

Its a long shot, but just an idea

Toronto
Stamkos(50% retained Nashville)
Marchessault(50% retained Nashville)
O'Reilly(50% retained by NJ)
L.Schenn(50% retained by NJ)

New Jersey
Tavares(50% retained Nashville)
Sissons
Jarnkrok

Nashville
1st round pick Toronto
1st round pick New Jersey
1st round pick New Jersey
2nd round pick New Jersey
2nd round pick New Jersey
4th round pick Toronto
4th round pick Nashville
Prospect New Jersey
Prospect New Jersey
Abruzzese
Niemela
Myers
Kampf
Dewar
Reaves

Move Timmins & picks for Murphy & Tanev.
