I am paraphrasing, but I just heard Frank Seravalli say this on the Fan JD Bunkis podcast.

"A 1st, a 2nd, and a 4th could get it done for Gourde and Tanev."

Another quote: "Toronto's priority list 1.A Center 2. A Winger 3. A RH depth defensemen"

"The first team to present a 1st round pick gets Laughton."

Also said at the beginning of the show: "this is absolutely a Buyers' Market this year. There are a far greater amount of players available compared to the amount of teams looking to fill limited spots."

Also mentioned that FLA and Tampa are going after impact players linking Alex Tuch to Tampa. That Tampa might even be willing to overspend for him.

Moderators,

Once the podcast goes up I'll provide exact quotes and a link.
Clearly a buyers market

Did he really say that?

Doing nothing would be unacceptable imo.

Tampa and Florida both making good additions only adds to that: not take away from it.

Just be smart and acquire guys with term. Until Friedman reported it nobody talked about Bjorkstrand being available. There are guys like that all over every year.

Domi

I meant in terms of trading and making bold/strategic moves. UFA signings have been alright.

I'd rather make good moves than bold ones tbh. Folks on here seem to be bristling at the idea of giving up a 1st for a quality, controlled player like Laughton...they'd freak the f*** out if we made a "bold" move like giving up two firsts and a 2nd for two guys who are comparable in impact to Laughton...

Bold doesn't mean bad though? If Tampa wins the cup or goes far nobody will care about that stuff. If it doesn't work you keep working at it. They certainly didn't get scared after the Jeannot fiasco. Florida has a ton of cap space and no assets? Doesn't matter, they are going for it.

Scared of making a mistake... what a good management team.

Im sorry but everyone is freaking out over tampa’s horrible trade and seth jones for florida? If toronto did either trade then everyone would be calling for Tre’s head

It really has nothing to do with either of those teams. Toronto does need help in few areas, that's been well documented
If other teams starts grabbing some of the players we are targetting then there's a case to be made for urgency

Especially this year, when we finally have some defense and good goaltending

Getting a partner for Rielly is a double win. We upgrade on Myers and Rielly becomes not a -15 dman.

Domi, McMann and Robertson have been a good 3rd line imo. They're a better 3rd line than most other teams have, it's a plus line as-is.

Spend assets on D pls.

Both players Tampa got are significantly more impactful than Laughton. Bjorkstrand has averaged a 50 point pace for his entire career and has scored 20 goals 5 times (and 18 in 56 GP during the COVID year). Gourde is actually a C, unlike Laughton, and has won 2 cups with Tampa and was (might still be) elite defensively. He has also surpassed Laughton's career high in points 4 times.

If AM, MM and JT continues to struggle in playoffs. Willie continues his a few bad games and a few great games trend in playoffs. Reilly’s lack of rush defence in playoffs.

It doesn’t matter who we have as 3C or RHD.

Bc if those 5 guys continue their playoffs trend, the only way Leafs win in playoffs is by having our goalies steal 4 games of the series without allowing more than ONE goal.

But would you pay the price that TB did?
Two 1st, One 2nd and Dewar

Every team that is a true competitor for the cup have already made moves, what are we waiting for?

If this was the Raptors we would have already addressed our holes, the whole management group needs to be fired.

I would love to know who was behind the Treliving signing, assuming MLSE had some part in this....why would Shanny go for someone like him, it doesn't make sense, considering who he brought in previously....we went from Lou a guy with experience too Dubas who was very knowledgeable in many areas but lacked experience, and now we're left with a guy who probably has a worse track record than Dubas🤣and lacks hockey knowledge vs these guys.

If i recall one of the main reasons to signing him as our GM was to sign our big 3, and that's a complete joke considering Marner & Tavares potentially walk this off-season and are replaced with mediocre players🤣
