Reilly needs to be sheltered on the third pair if there's any hope of winning
Does he? We may as well buy him out, then...

But really, if you're going to get the best out of him, you need to put him with a steady partner and be lenient enough to afford him a few mistakes because if he's playing scared with no risk in his game, you're getting nothing.

But that is not this coach's MO, which is why he's rather mediocre.

Why would Seattle do this?

I am paraphrasing, but I just heard Frank Seravalli say this on the Fan JD Bunkis podcast.

"A 1st, a 2nd, and a 4th could get it done for Gourde and Tanev."

Another quote: "Toronto's priority list 1.A Center 2. A Winger 3. A RH depth defensemen"

"The first team to present a 1st round pick gets Laughton."

Also said at the beginning of the show: "this is absolutely a Buyers' Market this year. There are a far greater amount of players available compared to the amount of teams looking to fill limited spots."

Also mentioned that FLA and Tampa are going after impact players linking Alex Tuch to Tampa. That Tampa might even be willing to overspend for him.

Moderators,

Once the podcast goes up I'll provide exact quotes and a link.
I like Tampa's strategy so much more than ours. It seems like they get higher quality players and pay a high price but they keep them long term rather than rentals.

Yep if we're paying Cowan + a 1st. it should be something similar to acquiring Hagel. or even Minten + a 1st

I'm all for going all in. we are the 4th best team in the league with Matthews sucking ass all season. I just wouldn't trade the equivalent of two first rounders for Schenn or Laughton

Prioritizing a winger over a defenseman is interesting. I guess they really have no confidence in Pontus at LW2? :laugh:

It makes sense... but for this year, only for pieces you will keep for years... not UFA's. I'm not sure without a healthy Matthews, we are going to be good enough. One non EN goal in fifteen games for Matthews... he's not healthy at all. The prices for trades are very high right now.... The prices to make changes, trades, are likely going to be lower in the off season.

Agreed, term to me is a necessity if we’re parting with anything from our top handful of assets.

Re: Matthews I will say, I agree he’s definitely hurt and I think the team, even if they haven’t told us what hasn’t really skirted the fact that he’s not healthy. With that said, I definitely like that he’s still producing and helping the team, even if his goal scoring is currently non existent. I definitely expect that we find him some rest down the stretch, and that he will push himself through his injury harder in the playoffs than what we’re getting now. Fwiw, I thought he had some goal scoring jump vs the Sharks.

If I had inside knowledge that there is the probability Matthews will be fine come the playoffs... ok, let's giddy up. If not, then maybe make those changes in the offseason when we can do so more cheaply, and maybe even fill some of those holes through UFA.

Would be ideal but built through UFA doesn’t really work cap wise. You get few if any bargains.

Lastly, I really don’t think opting to not improve clear weaknesses for this playoff opportunity is sensible. Even with Matthews being limited all year long we still find ourselves 4th in the league. There’s gotta be some reasonable cost options we can acquire out there. There always are. Time for Tre and his management staff to earn their paycheques.

LOL it's a buyer's market but for the leafs you need to pony up a first and a second for an injured gourde and Brandon f***ing tanev ...yeah GTFO

Spend the assets but get guys like tuch/cozens and shit back.

Yeah go for the big fish. I'm tired of the Leafs trading 1st rounders for Folingo types. If those types of players come cheap sure get them but don't spend the best assets on guys who are on their last leg.

notable foward before being traded by stanley cup winner since 2016
reg before trade ---playoff impact
tarasenko 59 pts ----> 31 pts
Barbashev 40 pts pace ---> 67 pts
Lehkonen 41 pts ---> 57 pts
coleman carreer high 44 pts ---> 43 pts
goodrow 32 pts ----> 20 pts
hagelin 23 pts ----> 55 pts

If you're only watching stats, you're missed something. Tarasenko had been best producer foward when traded and only Goodrow been worst in playoff.

You don't make move for stats but for what the player can bring different and how he can complete your team

Thought i should bring this post up again, just going to throw a few names out there:

Zucker
R.Strome
Vatrano
O'Reilly
Stephenson
Palmieri
Toffoli
Nelson
Lee
McLeod
Gallagher
Killorn
Tolvanen
McBain

Heard McCann is on the table for Seattle. If we could get retention, he would be worth paying for, even if he is a winger.

One interesting point made by Mirtle and Jonas on the Leafs report was that they should have waived Dewar and Reaves ahead of the deadline. Now it’s too late, but neither would’ve been claimed and it could have given the Leafs 2.6 mill heading into the deadline.

This is the kindve thinking that Tre has dropped the ball on during his tenure here.

I don't think it would have mattered. Leafs need a lot more than 2M in cap space to do anything of note.

Maybe the Leafs just like the players as well and would rather keep them up.

Yeah, we need to return fire as it really looks like our main competition is absolutely loading up.

I didn't know Bjorkstrand was available.

Go get Parayko or something.

Would love McCann. Sadly doesn't fix our C or D issues. Need an UNO reverse card for not protecting him over Holl in the expansion draft. McCann and Oleksiak would be a great deadline adds for Tre. McCann could provide that necessary secondary scoring this team needs.
