I like Tampa's strategy so much more than ours. It seems like they get higher quality players and pay a high price but they keep them long term rather than rentals.

Yep if we're paying Cowan + a 1st. it should be something similar to acquiring Hagel. or even Minten + a 1st

Prioritizing a winger over a defenseman is interesting. I guess they really have no confidence in Pontus at LW2?

It makes sense... but for this year, only for pieces you will keep for years... not UFA's. I'm not sure without a healthy Matthews, we are going to be good enough. One non EN goal in fifteen games for Matthews... he's not healthy at all. The prices for trades are very high right now.... The prices to make changes, trades, are likely going to be lower in the off season.

Agreed, term to me is a necessity if we’re parting with anything from our top handful of assets.

Re: Matthews I will say, I agree he’s definitely hurt and I think the team, even if they haven’t told us what hasn’t really skirted the fact that he’s not healthy. With that said, I definitely like that he’s still producing and helping the team, even if his goal scoring is currently non existent. I definitely expect that we find him some rest down the stretch, and that he will push himself through his injury harder in the playoffs than what we’re getting now. Fwiw, I thought he had some goal scoring jump vs the Sharks.

If I had inside knowledge that there is the probability Matthews will be fine come the playoffs... ok, let's giddy up. If not, then maybe make those changes in the offseason when we can do so more cheaply, and maybe even fill some of those holes through UFA.

Would be ideal but built through UFA doesn’t really work cap wise. You get few if any bargains.

Lastly, I really don’t think opting to not improve clear weaknesses for this playoff opportunity is sensible. Even with Matthews being limited all year long we still find ourselves 4th in the league. There’s gotta be some reasonable cost options we can acquire out there. There always are. Time for Tre and his management staff to earn their paycheques.

Yeah go for the big fish. I'm tired of the Leafs trading 1st rounders for Folingo types. If those types of players come cheap sure get them but don't spend the best assets on guys who are on their last leg.

Would love McCann. Sadly doesn't fix our C or D issues. Need an UNO reverse card for not protecting him over Holl in the expansion draft. McCann and Oleksiak would be a great deadline adds for Tre. McCann could provide that necessary secondary scoring this team needs.
