To Toronto-
Gourde 50% retained
Tanev 50% retained
Larsson

To Seattle-
Timmins
Jarnkrok
 Robertson
Cowan
Danford
1st Round Pick

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Mcmann-Tavares-Marner
Tanev-Gourde-Domi
Lorentz-Kampf-Holmberg

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Larsson
OEL-Benoit

"Adam Larsson is a guy Toronto has called on a few times, I've heard Seattle basically told them like lose our number, stop calling about this guy."

Seattle has used 0/3 retention slots so it's very possible they do it for both players and gain better value.

Gourde is on LTIR and is questionable to be ready before the playoffs. So you might not need him retained. A trade involving him needs to happen soon so that you can do a medical beforehand and make sure you're not getting something awful.

Under the scenario where Tkachuk is back for the playoffs (has his surgery been scheduled?) to keep pace with the Cup winners what do the Leafs have to do in the deadline.

Panthers added a defenseman who at the minimum is a Top 4, likely a Top 2 or 3.
My expectation is they will add another $6-7mm forward to their line-up.
Again, IMO, the Panthers will empty the bank, and as reported yesterday, they can push the 1st. to the Hawks to 2027. So what does a 2026 1st. and 2nd. get you?
Add in a prospect: MCKEEN’S 2024-25 NHL YEARBOOK – FLORIDA PANTHERS – Top 15 Prospect Profiles – Organizational Rank #32

Does a Tanev or Gourde rental level the playing field?
Even with 50% retention, Goude is $2.6mm.

Yes I've heard that but I also highly doubt the Leafs have offered them 2 of their top 5 prospects as part of the package, including a 1st Round Pick

Really like that deal for the Oilers. 75% retained on Frederic, who is a solid 3rd liner & adds an element of toughness.

Let's face it; the only moves the Leafs are going to make are going to be "depth D-man for low draft pick" and "depth forward for low draft pick" style deals, because the idea of doing a really big deal again terrifies our GM.

While I agree with you that the Panthers are not likely done, I don't think we want to think about this as an arms race. We have holes in our lineup that need to be addressed. If we fill those gaps, we have as good a chance as anyone at a cup. 'Keeping pace' on the trade front is counter-productive. You can make too many deals that it hurts your chemistry.

If we play FLA in the playoffs, it will come down to Bobrovsky vs Stolarz.

Strange take. Why would he be terrified?

Serious question - what is the general cost for retaining exactly 1 million dollars for:

1 year
2 years
3 years

I assume there is a big difference when jumping from same year to additional years.

Any thoughts here…
They were giving teams 5th round picks for full retention lastyear

We should be going full tilt this tdl.
We can only bring in guys on there last year for this to work though, unless we can get them for cheap on term...with the exception of one defenseman around 2-2.5M.

Management can still give us the best roster possible this year and still have the ability to rebuild next season.

If this roster can't get it done with all the peaces in place, things need to change.

Cowan has the potential to be a Tavares with more gritt & im sure Minten can match Domi/Kampf's production.

Steeves & Robertson deserve a real chance to show what they have to offer.

As long as we're able to keep our top prospects we can still have a roster of:

Center
Matthews
Cowan
Minten
Lorentz(800k x1year)

Left wing
Steeves(1.35M x2years)
Robertson(1.35M x2years)
Knies(4M x7years)
McMann

Right wing
Rantanen(13.250M)
Marner(13.750M)
Nylander
Tanev(1M x 1year)

Extras
Hirvonen(800k x2years)
Holmberg(1.2M x3years)
Perry(1M x1year)

Left defense
Rielly or Sergachev
McCabe
Ekmam-Larsson

Right defense
Tanev
Benoit
Gudas

Extras
Rifai
Niemela
Mattinen
Kokkonen
Benning

Lines:
1st-Robertson-Matthews-Rantanen
2nd(A)-Steeves-Cowan-Marner
2nd(B)Knies-Minten-Nylander
3rd-4th-McMann-Lorentz-Tanev
Extras-Hirvonen-Holmberg-Perry

1st(A)Rielly or Sergachev-Gudas
1st(B)McCabe-Tanev
1st(C)Ekmam-Larsson-Benoit

PP #1
Nylander-Cowan-Rantanen
Matthews-Marner

PP #2
Knies-Cowan-McMann
Robertson-Steeves

PK #1
Lorentz-Tanev
Gudas-Tanev

PK #2
Minten-Knies
McCabe-Benoit

If we go this route,
Let's compare this season's roster

Cowan vs Tavares
Minten vs Kampf
Tanev vs Reaves
Robertson vs Domi
Steeves vs Pacioretty
Murphy vs Timmins
Gudas vs Myers
Perry vs Jarnkrok
Hirvonen vs Dewar

Regardless of some of these guys not having nhl experience or very little, im confident they can match the numbers that need to be replaced.

I'd be willing to move Rielly in the offseason for someone like Sergachev...he's the twf we always wanted in Morgan, ship him out with some picks and low-end prospects....start getting younger on the back end, that would be a start.

We would obviously still have our defense that are currently signed for the next 4years(Tanev, McCabe) but that would be the only area we need to assess in the future. Let's say one of Niemela/Danford work out, we're left with three solid defenseman
(Sergachev, Benoit, Niemela or Danford) with Tanev and McCabe gone we could sign there replacements in free agency.

That leaves us 4years to draft/develop two defenseman....after the next four years of building our defense & goalies we would start drafting offense to replace Matthews, Marner, Nylander & Rantanen, assuming we have them for the next 8years, and we will probably keep one of these players, lets just say we keep Marner....we would have options by the 6th-8th year to move them for picks/prospects.

Roster after 8-years
Robertson-Draft-Draft
Steeves*-Cowan-Marner*
Knies-Minten-Trade
FreeAgent-Hirvonen*-FreeAgent

Sergachev*-Niemela or Danford
Benoit*-FreeAgent
FreeAgent-Draft
Draft-Trade

Draft/FA/Trade
Woll

Players with a *
Will have to be replaced after 5+ years
But this gives us the next 13years to be a top contender for the cup.

A depth defender doesn't fill their hole on defense.
A depth center doesn't fill their need in the forward ranks.

I'd support doing nothing, unless it is a depth forward for a depth forward who might bring something different for both teams. Or a depth defender for one of the Leafs 3 depth defenders Myers/Timmins/Benoir if they think they are a better fit.

Throw in a disposable prospect or two.
