Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Deadline-ageddon

That’s their problem, I’m just outlining what I think is right.
That's fair. I think many of us would already have made changes. If we fail to win at least a round, maybe two, I think most fans would want change. Rantanen, instead of Marner is certainly one such change.

Personally, I think I'd rather increase the depth, than double down on concentration of Cap space. For the $13-14 mil per year that Rants is going to demand, I'd go for a good C, and good Winger.

Tnev and Gourde are both pain in the asses to play against. I hope they dont go to a Atlantic Divison rival

Tampa fans still love Gourde and want him back bad

If we trade for him the upshot is we have one run with Rantanen, Marner and Tavares under one umbrella. But after the offseason, that trio becomes a duo at best.

Fundamentally, I think we need to future plan and start the next era and getting a new core player would be a good start.

I'm waiting to see who else the Panthers add to see how much distance they put between the Leafs and themselves this year's playoffs.

I've thought about addressing 3 needs

RD
C
LW in the middle 6

Reaves and Patches are demoted.

Gambling a bit on if Smith can be useful for us in the top 6
Gambling on Gourde being any good after hernia surgery
Ristolainen is someone I have warmed up to even more as we've gone along as we clearly need defensive help

I don't know if management has the balls to trade Domi so fast or waive the vets.

Desharnais is really struggling and I struggle to think he'd be any better than Myers... but the Leafs had a lot of interest in him last season. I don't know how he got 2M from the Canucks but yeesh.
I like how he looked in Edmonton but with his struggles since leaving there he is a summer project to me. Bring him in early season and find his ideal usage. To add him now is to hope that he will just turn his game around on short notice which isn't a playoff add to me. They need players who can hit the deck running, not rehab projects.

Pitts is a tire fire.

I’d be interested in McTavish as well.
Very interested in him but not sure what it would take to get Anaheim to move away from someone that young. I have said before Robertson being almost local would have interest but not enough for a building block player. I don't think they have the assets for this kid.

T minus 3 days and it is eerily quiet

Do we think it is a precursor for a slow, traffic-jammed trade deadline day?
Or a bottle up of pressure before a flurry of panic moves across the league?

It seems like a lot of teams are still undecided about selling/standing pat. Islanders are having a management meeting today per Pagnotta. They are holding up a lot of interest in Nelson and Palmieri. Some teams are seeing if they can re-sign players instead of trading them like Rantanen, Evans with MTL, etc.

All it takes is one domino to set off a few different avenues.

Serious question - what is the general cost for retaining exactly 1 million dollars for:

1 year
2 years
3 years

I assume there is a big difference when jumping from same year to additional years.

Any thoughts here…

Lots of pipe dreaming in this thread. I don’t see any kind of a big splash happening here. Rantanen? Never happening.
