Provorov is pretty close and good. What top 4 D is actually available that makes under 5-6 m that would allow them to also get a top 3 c?
Looking at RD only: Carlo, Risto, maybe Murphy, maybe Andersson. What top 4 D is actually available that makes under 5-6 m that would allow them to also get a top 3 c?
I havnt seen the leafs linked to much of anything that will move the needleEveryone needs to stop with this 1st round bs for Laughton it makes me sick, the guys teeee rash....id rather keep Domi or Jarnkrok.
Ristolainen is decent if retained but cost more cap then Gudas, Schenn & Murphy.
I like Pageau but is he really an upgrade from Domi??
Its pre close, and I'd argue Max brings more gritt too the bottom 6, and offense...the difference is 1.250M if Pageau is retained 50%....hard pass brother
Too get Tanev, Lorentz & Pacioretty back on the roster we need to move Timmins, Myers, Mermis, Dewar & Reaves.
We're left with Domi, Jarnkrok & Kampf too trade for more cap = 8.250M
The only player waivers exempt is Knies but thats another 925k we can free up, and he might not have to be sent down depending on how long Tanev & Pacioretty are out. Total cap = 9.175M
Lorentz fills the 4th center spot
Two shutdown defenseman will cost us around 4M.....that gives us 5.175M to acquire some help on offense.
Playoff roster
Knies-Matthews-Marner
Marchand-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-McBain-Gallagher
Robertson-Lorentz-Tanev
Steeves-Holmberg-Pacioretty
Rielly-Murphy
McCabe-Tanev
Ekmam-Larsson-Gudas
Benoit-Hakanpaa
PP #1
Nylander-Tavares-Marchand
Matthews-Marner
PP #2
Nylander-Matthews-Knies
Robertson/Steeves-Marner
PK #1
McBain-Tanev
Tanev-Gudas
PK #2
Lorentz-Gallagher
McCabe-Murphy
This would be my ideal roster, and id be willing to move any picks, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Domi, Timmins, Myers, Dewar and any prospects besides Niemela, Mattinen, Minten, Cowan, Hirvonen & Danford to make it work.
Also we keep Benoit he will end up being a top shutdown defenseman, i'd move any young defenseman besides him.
People are so worried about losing draft picks but not one draft pick for the next 10 years will work out to be on the same caliber as Marner facts! And if we dont make changes this tdl Marner will walk 100%....he wants to win
What's his hits/blocked shots the past few years?
I would take Brock Nelson + L.Schenn over Risto or Murphy all day, everyday.Looking at RD only: Carlo, Risto, maybe Murphy, maybe Andersson.
OEL needs to play the left side but I think he can handle 21 minutes a night.OEL has talent and could be a good bottom pairing puck mover on a championship team.
He should not be a top 4 that's being asked to play his offside alongside a very average defensive player.
We really need to add someone that can play with Rielly and move OEL down to third pairing.
I think Treliving would have to be drunk to agree to acquire Mayfield. That is a terrible, terrible contract.Get Lou drunk and go after Nelson and Mayfield.

Something like this works imo if they add Schenn
OEL - Tanev
Reilly - Schenn
Benoit - McCabe
TOI
McCabe - 22
Tanev - 21
OEL - 21
Rielly - 21
Schenn - 17

But this is forcing OEL against elite competition, where that is probably exposing him a bit too much.
I would shocked if they went away from the McCabe - Tanev pairing at this point as they have been elite.
The point is we badly need another defencemen. I don't like the current setup and having two of Benoit/Timmins/Myers in the lineup at the same time doesn't inspire much confidence when the goal is championship.

I think your 2 best options are Murphy or Ristolainen if you want RHDs that do well in their own way. Schenn would be fine if cheap.
Provorov and Walman are not RHD but would bolster our quality a lot and are capable of playing RD as far as I know.
The problem with Risto, is we really need a D man to stabilize the Rielly pairing, and Risto also needs a stabilizing partner... it would be a bad mix.
if you can trust Murphy bouncing back being on a better team. Donato/Murphy package would be good at the TDL. It also locks in your top 4 for next year in advance. Unless you go after an Ekblad or make a trade for a defender in the offseason.
Gives you
McCabe - Tanev
Rielly - Murphy
as the top 4 for the playoffs. I'd potentially give Timmins/OEL PP time over Rielly so he can focus on 5on5.
Fair enough. Using McCabe and Tanev as a shutdown pair with OEL on the bottom pair, is perfectly fine. Put Rielly with Schenn. And then use OEL-Timmins. The only problem is I prefer Benoit to Timmins, but Timmins is RD.But this is forcing OEL against elite competition, where that is probably exposing him a bit too much.

If we were to get Provorov, we would have 5 LD and 1 RD. Not sure how the combos would work. One of Rielly, Provorov or OEL would need to play on their offside, and McCabe would too.Not sure if Luke Schenn would be my first choice at all to bolster RHD depth. It's also crazy to see our best overall defenseman next to Benoit. None of that makes sense. McCabe and Tanev have been among the best in the entire NHL defensively.

We know exactly what OEL is on a championship team. He played 15 minutes/night for Florida in the playoffs last year.OEL needs to play the left side but I think he can handle 21 minutes a night.

I agree, he's been solid for Philly, because Zamula is a soldifying steady Defensive partner. Rielly needs a Zamula, not a Risto. Go find a Right handed Zamula. It's a better mix than pushing Timmins or Myers into that spot if an injury happens. Risto isn't perfect but he's a big guy that does some good things. He's been solid for Philly. If there's retention on his deal, I think he can be a good mid-pair defenseman that fits into the cap structure.
If we fail to do anything these playoffs, and somehow we could sign Chychrun as a UFA, the right move would probably be to move off Morgan. I just don't think this franchise has the balls to do that though. Also, we would never do it. But we should see what teams Morgan would accept a trade to and potentially look into trading him this offseason.
I'm not advocating for Risto but if what you're saying is true - why not go McCabe-Risto, Rielly-Tanev?I agree, he's been solid for Philly, because Zamula is a soldifying steady Defensive partner. Rielly needs a Zamula, not a Risto. Go find a Right handed Zamula.
Yeah no kidding. Why mess with it.Not sure if Luke Schenn would be my first choice at all to bolster RHD depth. It's also crazy to see our best overall defenseman next to Benoit. None of that makes sense. McCabe and Tanev have been among the best in the entire NHL defensively.
OEL-Tanev has actually outperformed McCabe-Tanev in GF% and xGF%. McCabe-Tanev are still great together but they don't need to be glued together.McCabe and Tanev have been among the best in the entire NHL defensively.
Its the closest we will be for a while unfortunately.....we already mortgaged the farm when we cut the rebuild short years ago.....its do or die this seasonYeah no kidding. Why mess with it.
It will probably be a quiet deadline and that's OK. We are not close to contending anyways, and it's not worth to mortgage the farm for a cup run yet.
