I don't think Gustafsson unseats either of Holl or Timmins. He's offensively gifted but he's really poor defensively, like, really, really bad. I think that trade was Sandin for a 1st rounder and Gus was included to free up a contact spot and give the Leafs some NHL calibre depth on D, but I really doubt he's in their plans.

The Leafs are his seventh NHL team since 2019-20. He looks great on paper, but on the ice, it's a different story.
He's been playing top pairing minutes with TVR for the last couple of months, and has been doing a pretty good job. I think his defensive issues are being overstated. It's possible the guy can figure that type of thing out.

McCabe-Brodie
Rielly-Liljegren/Schenn
Gio-Schenn/Liljegren
Gustafsson-Timmins

2M Holl seems like the odd guy out...

I wouldn't trust him. I suspect the Leafs will add to their defence and all of this will be a moot point, but I don't think he should be anything other than a Plan B for the Maple Leafs in the playoffs.

That being said, I like this deal for them, even if Gus wasn't included at all. Flipping Sandin for a 1st rounder, even a late first rounder, is a win for the Leafs.

Sandin was often over-rated around here. He was a big factor in the Leafs losing against the Canadiens because they exploited him because he played scared, was easily rattled and mades mistakes. I didn't see the growth I would have liked to see out of him since then, either.

I don't think they wanted him to see the ice in their best case scenario in the playoffs and if you can't trust him to play in those games then I think it was wise to cut bait while they could still get a 1st round pick for him.

Holl’s gotta be gone next….

Guess Kerfoot to Vancouver isn’t happenjng

But this opens up a spot for Knies or McMann if not another trade

I do worry about team chemistry though and so many new guys learning the system. Big adjustments coming up. This is A LOT of change.

Clearly Dubas is seeing the same red flags with this group so he’s scorching the depth.

sandin is also only 22.

Like.... he's a kid. Growth takes time.

What the hell is even happening? I can't keep up with all the Dubas trades today lol there is hardly enough time to react!

I am very worried about team chemistry. I don't think this level of roster changing made any sense. But yeah, it feels like they were not happy with how players were progressing and playing.

I hope it works out. This is absurd but I am excited.

I don't think we're gonna struggle with guys picking up the system to be honest. Guys on Overdrive say it etc all the time, it's the same 2-3 systems for every team in the league.

So trade a 22 year old defender learning the game with speed issues for a 33 year old UFA defender with speed issues.

1st. round pick isn't going to help them win in the playoffs for 4-5 years.

I feel like Dubas has won a lot of people over that haven't ever been big fans.

You can't say that he hasn't tried. He's going all in. This is getting bonkers.

I hope the change over with all the new guys will gel together quickly.

Not really a fan of all these moves just for the sake of it. The Leafs aren't any better by swapping out Sandin/Engvall for Gustavsson/Schenn, and it seems like it hasn't gone over well with the other Swedish players. Hopefully this is just a precursor to another quality addition, otherwise it just makes the team worse in the short and long terms

I highly doubt that 1st round pick is going to be used by the leafs

the only way this sandin trade makes sense is 1) he asked for it, or 2) we use that pick and get us a top 6 winger, or 3) somehow a dude like saros becomes available.
