So, hear me out on this…

A buddy of mine just saw something about rumours of Matthews possibly being out for the rest of the regular season

We basically know we’re playing Tampa in the first round. Maybe Dubas can pull a Chicago or Tampa and have Matthews out until the first playoff game?

Just think of the additions Dubas could make at the deadline, if he did that! If we’re going to tilt the scales heavily in our favour, this is definitely a way to do it!

Oh, I know that I’m going to get some posters riled up for this one, but that’s fine. Flame away!!

A buddy of mine "saw" something...

I mean, if he "saw" something, it should be easy to post the source no? Without a source, it's just speculation.

If any team, including the Leafs has cap room, due to injuries, or any other reason, of course they should maximize that space, just as we are now with Muzzin's space.

I won’t quote a rumour when it isn’t from a respected source and I’m not saying that I believe it myself. I’m just saying that if this is actually true, then I think this would be amazing.

We’ve shown that we can win without Matthews in the lineup… in the regular season. If he has an injury, or injuries, that are more serious than originally thought, then shut him down! Give him ample time to fully heal. We know he’s had some nagging injuries with his wrist and now his knee.

I’m only suggesting that if he needs to be out for another month or two, then it would be pretty easy to stretch that out to the beginning of the playoffs.

It’s honestly a no brainer. If you can get Chychrun for our 1st, Sandin and a B+ prospect, you do it.

Yeah even though I’m not as big a fan of Chych as most people here that’s an easy price to pay, the problem only starts when you get into 1st + Sandin + Knies territory.

Ideally you dump Kerfoot as well and have enough cap space/assets left to land Henrique at 25% and maybe a 13th forward/7D a la Bogosian. Having Henrique and Chychrun for this playoff run and next at basically Muzzin’s LTIR space combined would take the sting off the futures needed to make it work. We’d have enough cap space for another good add next year on top of those two while Tampa, Boston, and most of the other contenders will have already spent their futures and cap flexibility on this year’s run.

Agreed. I wouldn’t include Knies unless we somehow got Chychrun AND Crouse in the deal. But that won’t happen. Anyone outside of Knies to go along with a 1st and Sandin, I’d be fine with.

So no source...

The cap doesn't work that way... He is either out for the whole season now, or that space really isn't usable to make a significant acquisition. I suppose mathematically, there is a time when it could be used to our advantage, but I don't think it's a very large cap hit.

LTIR is accumulative but only exists while the player is out... Jake Muzzin makes up the majority of Leafs trade deadline available cap space .. However that is only true until (if or when he does).

Leafs really need clarity on his situation and if he can return during the regular season or not as that is what will really determine what the Leafs can do to add to the team this season.

Just my personal opinion, but I think the Leafs have clarity on Muzzin's situation. They just haven't communicated it to the rest of the world.

Leafs trade deadline moves if any or how many will provide clarity to this.

Leaf going All-In big at the TD all but tells you Muzz is done for the regular season at least.

The way Marner was talking early in the year about Jake's long=term future health outside of hockey tells me that I don't think anyone expects him back any time soon. IMO

That's the way I interpreted that as well.

Wouldn't it be safe to assume that Muzzin won't play another game in a Leafs uniform? Injury history, cap space, etc. It just seems like he's done.

And there's no one out there suggesting that he's even started skating. Sometimes insiders might say that there's a chance, but it just seems like mums the word.

The man has been a warrior for his career and I wish him nothing but good health for later in his life. But I think he's probably done.

Does it make sense to trade him sooner? Does that help with the cap situation?

Not really... it would, if we weren't maximizing the cap, but we'll always be close to it. We'll just stick him on the Island and that's it...

Sure would like our team to do early deals (like right now) since we are off until Friday. Be a good way to insert some practice in and get aquainted.

I wouldn't mind chych but is our team ready for a big heavy slap shot and being ready to dive out of the way? JT is a great tipper but his reflexes will have to step up even more with a Chych boomer, jus saying.

And like I said about a month ago MUZZ will not play again. :)

I wonder what it would take to acquire Bertuzzi. It would also be smart on his end to take a short 1 or 2 year deal at a reasonable cap hit to play alongside Matthews or Tavares in order to boost his value and try to cash in as a UFA following the contract.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Konecny - Tavares - Marner
Knies - Kampf - Jarnkrok
ZAR - Engvall - Hunt
ex. Simmonds

Rielly - Liljegren
Chychrun - Brodie
Giordano - Holl
ex. Benn - Timmins

Samsonov
Murray
ex. Woll

Sandin + 2024 1st (Lottery Protected) + Robertson for Chychrun (50% retained - 2.3M per for 3 runs)

Holmberg + 2023 1st (Unprotected 1st) + Niemela for Konecny (50% retained - 2.75M for 3 runs)

Protect Knies and Minten.

Drop Kerfoot for a 3rd rd. pick to gain cap space to accomodate and an asset to replenish the pool.

The sad part of the Muzzin injury is that he is the exact type and style of Dman the Leafs could really use as an upgrade for his LTIR cap space.

I'd bet if the Leafs had their choice they would sooner have a healthy Muzzin back as opposed to using his re-captured cap space to replace him at par. IMO

With all the injuries Muzzin has suffered over the past two years along with all the games missed, even if he were to return he wouldn’t be anywhere close to the old Muzzin.

He'd also last a couple shifts before a regular forecheck shuts him down again and puts him at risk of losing long term quality of life outside of hockey.

Maybe this has been posted here previously, and I've missed it.... but it seems Chychrun has removed Coyotes from his bio in Social Media recently. He's started following a bunch of players... including a number of Leafs.

Another poster mentioned it. He might be trolling Leafs fans like Stammer was or something between the Leafs and Yotes could be in the works. Be interesting to hear what if the insiders mention this.

I personally think he's either trolling, or putting a little pressure on the Coyotes to get him out of there.

I don't know if this has been edited, or if he actually briefly posted this... but I do think he's trolling.... I don't think Chychrun would be the best acquisition, and Arizona's ask scares me... though I might consider paying it, if Crouse comes along too.... but anyway... this I found on Twitter too... No idea if it's real, or fake... I've seen multiple people post it... real? Trolling? Fake"
