I don't think the Bruins will trade him and take his words that he will improve on his strength this offseason.

On some nights, his passes look elite. But half the time he is not winning enough puck battles along the boards. So so on the FO dot.

I have never seen him in the NHL duplicate that fancy puck behind the legs play - that got him noticed from World Juniors.

His skating is just a notch above mediocre. I wonder with added strength .. he can gain more explosiveness.

He is also 26 turning 27 in November. So not too sure how much more development room he has left.

If available on the trade market (2 years left at about 5m aav) - what is he worth?

Well the Avs had to throw a second round pick on top of Mitts a few months ago just to get a 33 year old Charlie Coyle from you guys so that might give you some idea of his value.
Plus USHL prospect of the year - Will Zellers.

Question: Didn't Mittelstadt have a pretty good playoffs performance last season? Thus - Avs gave him a 3 year extension?

What happened? Did he regress that quickly/after the playoffs?

That would be a low bar. Or rather a high bar for Mittelstadt.

He was pretty solid in the playoffs last season and was like a point per game for the first 20 games this season. Then the wheels fell off.

Loss of Zellers stings. But I’m not sure you’re gonna find any kind of market for CM. He’s a deep reclamation project.

As a Sabres fan, I recall a couple of offseasons where he openly stated that he needed to improve his strength.

The weird thing is that when Mitts got traded to Colorado -- dude would win all the battles along the boards and possess the puck like a demon (in Buffalo). I do not know wtf happened with his inability to battle. I'm wondering if his problem is more mental at this point.

My bee
T it was a combo of him getting injured a nd his linemates changing.

He is not a center who elevates linemates but works well with better players.

Hes a pass first center

Yeah he was like that in Colorado initially too (good along the boards and winning pucks and playing hard in general). He didn’t get the extension for no reason, he was legitimately solid.

Certainly some of it is mental. We’ve seen him be a quality second line option. But god he turned into a pumpkin…essentially like having Tyson Jost out there again.

If he made $2.5 million, he probably has some salvageable value. At his current rate - he’s just a massive risk. Maybe the Bruins can rehab his value but I certainly wouldn’t be convinced on the basis of what he did in Boston that everything is “alright again”.

When interviewed about it back then... he stated that he is a hockey player. Not someone that needs to excel in those kind of things...

He was dead wrong. Looks like he finally realizes this deficiency. Too late?
One day hockey players will start realizing that lower body balance and muscle goes a lot way in winning battles, and protecting the puck. Kids, nobody cares that you can spin 4-5 times with the puck on your blade and flip it top corner. Stop skipping leg day.

When he was traded to COL for Byram most Sabres fans felt they got robbed. Quite a few were bracing for the next former Sabre that would help another franchise win a cup.

One of Mitts issues is his skating stride is very inefficient. Strength will help but he doesn’t get any momentum for the amount strides he takes. I don’t know if that can be fixed.

Colorado also got a 2026 5th round pick from Boston in the deal so obviously his value is pretty high.

This is the kind of dude who accumulates powerplay points on a rebuilding team and goes for a mid-round pick and/or a long-shot prospect at the deadline to a contender whose third line center is injured.
