There are about 4 teams from each conference that may be willing to overpay for a playoff push. Teams that may be desperate enough for a playoff push to drastically overpay:

Tampa
Toronto
Montreal
Detroit
Ottawa
Columbus
Philadelphia
Washington
Carolina
Chicago
St. Louis
Colorado
Minnesota
Anaheim
San Jose
LA
Vancouver

17 teams. One will over pay. No need to accept the first off you get. Someone always loses in the game of chicken. Make sure its not you, Glen.

The question is do those teams pony up the assets by Friday, which seams to be Sathers deadline...

Sather put himself in an even worse position by doing this deadline. No team is desperate enough yet to be as desperate as he wants them.

He removed a lot of leverage from himself if he goes through with this self-imposed deadline.

The bolded are the teams that would make the best trading partners for Callahan. They have the assets and willingness to make a push to make it happen.

Agreed, id like the have Girardi signed by Friday but I don't think the Callahan situation will be resolved by then.

Of those teams only Anaheim has the deadline cap space to make a trade for Callahan without sending $$ back, Tampa is close. Obviously teams have expiring contracts but im not gona look into that. However we could retain salary to up the value.

What's scary about the G situation is that as of last week all reports had his extension looking close to being done.

Now?

"He may test the free agency market".

I thought there was a high likelihood of trading 1 and signing 1 with an even higher likelihood of signing both to extensions.

Now this whole thing is a mess, with no one knowing what direction the team nor the athletes are positioned towards.

Rangers are getting the M.O of a team that doesn't reward its hardest workers. The players are getting the M.O for being greedy turds who think they're entitled to more than their skillset.

Lose-lose for both parties if you ask me. Sooner this is done, the better.

Yea the whole Girardi situation has gotten a little fuzzy but if him wanting Bouwmeester money is accurate I think it will get done, Dreger sounded more like he just didnt know what was going on with it because not much has been leaked around the situation since last week.

1st round pick should be required from each, as each will likely bear a pick between 15-29 (i.e. nothing lottery worthy).

After that, the next piece should be:

Detroit - Mantha
TB - Kucherov or Namestikov. Drouin would be way too ambitious.
Columbus - Jenner. I fear Murray would also be too ambitious.
Anaheim - Etem.
LA - Tuffoli
SJ - Only Hertl interests me.

I actually think Chris Stewart would be pretty good in our system and wouldn't mind this:
Callahan signed for Stewart + edm 2nd + Jordan schmaltz who has not played well but has offensive upside as a defensman and a former first rd pick

As Met, Jet and Ranger fan I am used to inconsistency and disappointment. Stewart would fit right in.

I think Chris Stewart as an acquisition would be interesting and potentially beneficial for this team if it was entirely independent of anything to do with Callahan.

Fans would naturally develop unfair expectations for this player. Inconsistent, definitely not "toff", but definitely has talent. That type of return for our beloved Captain will already start Stewart with a leg down in the fans eyes.

Are we talking an extended Callahan or a rental Callahan? Detroit has Tatar and Jurco that I'd also be interested in. Columbus has Rychel, Wenneberg that I'd be interested in. Anaheim has Palmieri, Kerdiles, and Rakell that would be good gets. LA has Clifford and Pearson that would be good gets. SJ has Nieto and Wingels that I'd want back.

Lots of options.

Maybe so. Consider though that for all we know he truly was hoping Callahan would cave and re-sign for 6/30. Maybe that was his ultimate goal. Granted it hasn't worked out that way and the results have put us in a tougher negotiating position but I don't think Sather just did it for ****s and giggles. They called Sathers bluff. Now it is his move.

Regardless of how things have progressed I think the friday deadline would still be in effect whether he made it public or not. We have seen players in years past get injured playing in the olympics. I am sure Callahan will be on the penalty kill blocking shots like a machine. Last thing we need is him taking another Chara snapshot to the ankle.

Also, teams that want Callahan will bid on him now. Not hope to get him after the Olympics. If Slats does not make public a deadline, potential serious bidders may be a little more relaxed on negotiations and hope to get a deal done after the Olympics. Therefore Sather has less bidders and has to trade Callahan for a lower price (all hypothetical of course).

Personally I think it was the only move to make.

If it's rental Callahan and my valuation of his worth is grossly overstated... then the 2nd tier A prospects (let's call them b+/a- prospects) that you listed would suffice too.

Palmieri looks to be a fringe 2nd/solid 3rd liner. Kerdiles seems hit or miss. Nieto is same as Kerdiles. Jurco screams Zherdev to me. Tatar screams 3rd liner.

None of those pieces will be traded. Would you trade Miller + 1st for the rental player? I wouldn't.

San Jose is not giving up Hertl. No way. If they did it could be as bad as the Zubov trade the Rangers made in 1995.

1st should be required.

Anaheim-One of Etem or Raekell and Smith-Pelly.
San Jose-Nieto and Havlat (as a throw in to get Nieto)
LA-Toffoli and Sabourin.
Tampa-Namestenkov or Panik and they'll probably have to take back Malone as a throw in.
Detroit-Abdelkader and Pulkikinen or Ferraro
STL-Stewart and Jaskin or Rattie.

I have no interest in trading with CBJ. Enough with them already.

I think these boards will be sorely disappointed in the return if these are the types of prospects expected back for Callahan.

In my opinion, there are 3 players that must be signed or traded. Can't walk. Callahan, Girardi, Stralman.

Boyle, Moore, Pouliot - I fully expect them tp play out the year and that's ok, even if they end up walking. They wouldn't return much anyway. Ride it out and decide who you want to sign in the offseason.

seconded.

Wild fan here just wondering what Ranger fans think will happen with Dan Girardi? Will he re-sign? If not, what kind of return would you expect in a trade? I would love to see him play alongside Ryan Suter for the next 7 years.

Hard to say, everyone has a different worth for our players on this board.

I'd assume general market value for him signed and extended by a trading team would be a top prospect and a mid first.

Something like Matt Dumba or Jason Zucker and a conditional first round pick if he signs an extension with Minnesota?

I'd assume that Sather would ask something of that nature for the player and extension, yes.

Eh, he might have hurt himself in his negotiations with Callahan's agent, but if that camp is sticking to the rumored numbers, then there was never a deal to be made anyway. I don't think Glen holding onto to Callahan past Friday hurts his position with other GMs, he's just as valuable a rental piece on March 5th as he is on Feburary 7th - unless he gets hurt playing in the olympics and the Rangers are left holding the bag, which is why Sather wants him out by Friday. It's also why no GM wants to move a bunch of assets for him right before he goes off to Russia for two weeks and plays in an emotional tournament that pays no benefits to whoever is hold his contract back in North America.
