Speculation: Trade Speculation Part IV

Yeah Brooklyndevil, our top 6 is really underperforming. With Loktionov and Zajac, this team should be really close to what we had last year on paper but too many key players are struggling right now. Zubrus can't come back soon enough though.

Hey guys. Patty - you learn any new bird calls?

he's bottomed out production wise and has been on every line from 1st to 4th lately in San Jose. If we send a pricey D man the other way to replace Irwin or Murray in the lineup, we would only be adding maybe $1M or so in salary.

Havlat has 2 points in his last 16 games so I think they'd be willing to move him.

yes he gets injured, but he has skills and with this hole on wing for a top 6 caliber player, I think he'd work out fine for what he is and can bring that missing Sykora snipe factor. Probably too high profile for Lou to even be looking at it, but it's an idea.

Exactly. This team just has to find *something* that works and build on it. The constant line juggling is the same thing MacLean did when he panicked a few years back. It seems like everyone is playing out of position, and Kovy is getting ridiculous minutes. I think CBGB is the only thing that is right about this team right now. I would: Move Elias back to center (he's played there for X years now, and with the extra skating it picks his game up) Bring back Josefsson to add some speed to a slow lineup. Figure out who our Dmen are going forward and just make a deal already (even if it is for draftpicks) so everyone can settle down and move on with their lives. Switch Henrique's # to 9, and put him on a line with Zajac. Hypnotize Zajac to think that Zach never left. Ok, seriously? Just let those two play together and develop some chemistry. Get Kovy off of the PK and limit him to one PP unit. Reduce his icetime.

i could get onboard with most of this i think

Do they want Volch or Tallinder? Say Volch.

But do the deal anyway. Toss in a potato and a signed jersey.

San Jose seems to need forwards as badly as we do. I think they're in a similar boat right now with 7-8 guys they're comfortable with on the blue line. Just seems unlikely that they'd deal Havlat for more D unless they had a separate trade in place for another forward.

Volchenkov's "issues" > Tallinder's issues. Hate to tell you all but this team isn't lightyears better with Volchenkov not in the lineup

If Havlat can stay healthy then sure. If not? No thank you. He'll just be a frustrating addition to the team. Personally I wonder what it would take to pry Setoguchi away from the Wild.

I think we see an angry, going all out Volchenkov when he gets back in. He was pissed in the Pittsburgh game and now he's a scratch. That hit on Malkin is exactly what we need from him.

I still get goosebumps whenever I think of that Havlat-Elias-Frolik line.

I wonder if the hawks would be willing to deal frolik given that he plays like 10 mins a night and they have a solid forward core. Maybe if they get a d injury we could swap Tallinder/Volch for Frolik. I'd do it and then maybe we could snag Havlat too and there's your dream scenario haha.

Not forfeiting the pick looks like nonsense at this point. Him being on the 1st line is nonsense at this point.

No it doesn't. The guy we chose with that pick is actually playing in the NHL at 19 years old is doing pretty well for himself considering. Maybe he shouldn't be on the first line but that is on Lou and coaching. You could argue that he shouldn't be in the NHL at all, because it might hinder his development only playing 10+- min a night. But there's no doubt he's gonna be a good NHL player one day. For a 29th pick that is pretty good.

He's actually played really well these last couple of games. I certainly look forward to watching him develop into a great (hopfully) power forward for us.

I always thought we should have forfeited the pick. In fact I remember it being a huge complaint on draft night. I also remember the few people who thought it was a good idea giving Jim a bunch of **** for saying we should have forfeited it.

Matteau will get AHL time for sure. I don't believe he's in the NHL for good, and the Devils never rush prospects. I have no reason to believe he's here for good. We have to forfeit a pick in the next two years, and many people think 2014 will be the year, with the draft being in Newark this year. What are the chances we get a 29th or 30th pick next year? Lou will NEED to shop on the UFA market for that, and I'm not sure he will do so.

I don't think Matteau spends time in the AHL. He's already good enough to man a bottom six role in the NHL, and is showing flashes of offensive ability.

Did I mention that the best line that year was Kovalchuk-Datsyuk-Radulov? :sarcasm:

I've been saying the whole time he'll get AHL time. I really believe he was on his way back before the Zubrus injury. Management made a conscious decision to shut him down after he got his 5 games. I think it was heavily considered that he would be going back. That's what that tells me.

Aside from Larsson who was clearly a world class talent, most of our guys have done AHL time. Larsson did AHL time cause of the lockout. Josefson, and Tedenby were rushed, because of injuries that 10/11 season.

Trade Matteau? REALLY?

This board sometimes  Amazes me how strongly people overreact when times are tough.

I wanted the pick to have been forfeited all along. I'm only just now touting this because of the hard times. I've kept my mouth shut, but I think not forfeiting the pick might hurt us. Do you honestly see a 29th or 30th pick in our next two years? I definitely don't. I never said he should be traded. I was thinking aloud. Trading him now would be stupid when we could have traded him at the draft before we drafted him, and got a better value. That way the team who got the pick could have picked what they wanted.

It's nothing against Matteau, but I really think we should have forfeited the pick. Many of you did too that night.
