The more I think about it, the more it seems to me the Rangers have made their moves by claiming Hamrlik, bringing back Zuccarello and possibly adding Fast. The teams biggest issue is two of their top players have underperformed — and I don't see a trade that will solve that problem.
Trading Gaborik The proposals being bandied about here just are not realistic. They are not going to get anything close to true value for him as he has not had a good season, is not a rental, carries a hefty price tag and can have a say in where he will or will not go as he has a NTC. If the Rangers feel that getting rid of Gaborik is a case of addition by subtraction (I don't think they do) what then can they really hope to get? Is this team really better off dealing Gaborik for the likes of Justin Williams (two more seasons at 3.65) or Jarret Stoll (two more seasons at 3.25)? But thinking that they will get a top six LW, bottom pair defensman and a first for Gaborik is just fantasy.
Brian Boyle Another guy who is underperforming and not a rental. Again, are the Rangers really going to be a better team just by getting rid of him? I was one of the people here who felt that Boyle could slot in as the team's third line center. And, perhaps stubbornly, I'm not ready to say he can't. But more importantly, if Gaborik and Richards were performing up to their standards, nobody would be killing Boyle for his lack of offense. But the question still remains, what is Boyle going to really net this team?
Gotta Give to Get If the Rangers really are looking to make a difference-making move, what exactly are they going to give up to make such a deal? Assuming Stepan, McDonagh, Hagelin, Staal, Girardi, Miller, Kreider and Del Zotto aren't being dealt, what do the Rangers really have to offer — especially without a 1st? Christian Thomas, Ryan Bourque, Brady Skeij are right now all prospects that most teams have already.
So where does this really them? If they want to sell off small pieces (Powe, Gilroy, Asham, Pyatt) they might be able to. But what is that really going to net this team to help them this season?
The best players they could get are the ones they already have — Gaborik and Richards. Looking at the Pens recent moves, it shows the importance of a productive Gaborik and Richards. While those two are nowhere near the calibre of player of Malkin and Crosby, if Richards and Gaborik were even producing half as much as last year and Stepan and Nash were doing what they were doing, the Rangers would be looking to fill holes/upgrade positions the way the Pens are — not revamp an entire lineup.
No panic moves. It's fair to chalk up this season to being an anomaly. And there is still youth, talent and upside in the lineup.
