If we get a scoring left winger, Pouliot should only be back as an extra forward. He doesn't belong in the bottom 6, and next year, when Brassard and Zuccarello become a 2nd line, they'll want a more consistent LWer than Pouliot.
I think we all agree Hagelin is best as a 3rd liner, and no way Pouliot is a 4th line type guy.
I really think Sather is going to make a run at Vanek, especially if Callahan is traded or let go. Hagelin is best suited for a checking role. He's great along the boards and an awesome forechecker, but I still maintain he's got stone hands, not good enough to be consistently in a top 6 role.
A couple other thoughts skimming through the last few pages...
-Stralman can't hold Girardi's jock, and I like Stralman. Stralman is passable on the top 4 if he's paired with Staal. If he plays with Moore or McDonagh even, he gets exposed. He had a horrific game against Columbus back in December paired with McDonagh. Granted everyone was playing piss poor hockey except for Kreider and Zuccarello at the time, but still.
-Callahan on Buffalo makes a lot of sense. Pegula has already shown that he's not afraid to throw money around, even though the team is rebuilding. I don't think they would trade for him though; a rebuilding team doesn't give up assets for a UFA to be, they'll just wait till July 1st. A signed and extended Callahan, on the other hand, could land a package along the lines of Grigorenko or Armia, Pysyk, and a mid round pick.
-Despite this, I still think that center is the team's biggest problem moving forward. Whether you buy Richards out or not, it's still going to be a problem. Richards will be a gliding corpse in another 2-3 seasons. I can see him putting up 55-60 point seasons for only one or two more years, then what? He still has 4 years left on his deal at that point.
We're really in a bad place. The team doesn't have the assets to trade for a top 6 center that fits in long term. Thornton just got extended, so that leaves Grabovski and Stastny as top 6 UFA options. There's a reason Toronto bought Grabo out, he's a lazier version of Brassard. Stastny is going to be very expensive. You know what though? I'd rather pony up the cash with the cap going up to secure our top 6 center depth for the next 5-6 years. Keeping Richards only gives us 1-2 more years of that certainty. Stastny gives us at least 5.
Miller will be in the NHL next season, but I see him as a great 3rd line center, never quite able to make the jump to the top 6. Ditto for Lindberg.
Nieves is our only other real prospect that may amount to anything, and he's regressed statistically in his sophomore season. Not encouraging when talking about a recent 2nd round pick that couldn't even crack his WJC team as a 19 year old, losing out to two guys I never heard of and a 16 year old (probably the best 16 year old USA prospect since Patrick Kane, but still).
I clamor on and on about drafting Ehlers, Pastrnak, or Karlsson this June. You always go BPA, but I feel like this team needs a blue chip center prospect. Trading up for Jared McCann would be absolutely huge for this franchise.
