I watched Grant last night and he looked more relaxed and did a very good job on the 4th line. He is such a good skater, he just needs time to adjust.

PS not sure why fans on this board are always so anxious to claim other team's castoffs. McCormick is 29 years old and really isn't better than any of Ottawa's 4th line players.

I agree that McCormick probably wouldn't be any better, but my train of thought is that it'll give Grant some prime minutes in Bingo now given that their depth has been obliterated as a result of our injuries. It would give us the chance to see what he could do with more minutes.

I fully expect Grant to play over 50% of next season on the O-Sens roster. If he doesn't make the team out of camp I'd expect him to be at the very least the first injury call-up.

Turris played behind Spezza, ROR had the luxury of playing first line and PP minutes, so of course the numbers will be skewed.

If ROR was willing to sign for $3.5M - $4M he wouldn't be a holdout.

Just like Turris was apparently demanding $5M a year from Pheonix. There's a reason for these demands, they want to leave. I'm not sure what you are arguing, as I stated ROR's numbers are marginally better and if he were traded to the Sens that that is what I am guessing he would end up asking/signing for. I was diminishing Turris' accomplishments.

Its rumours from Friedman.

ROR isn't and wouldn't be a 3rd line center here.

Its the same thing as Turris, he asking for more than hes worth so he can be traded.

He's a better player than Turris, but I think he would be a better fit on the 3rd line than Turris would. I'm frothing at the mouth at a shutdown line of Noesen - O'Reilly - Condra. Opposing top lines wouldn't stand a chance.

Definitely agree ..We could use some more toughness cant have Neil doing all the fighting he is too important now for other things ..

McCormick can help in protection role 4th line mins and if a game ever goes south you toss a Smith-McCormick-Neil on the ice

How many fights has Neil had this year?

Is it possible teams don't really see the Sens as soft, could that be possible?

Gryba, Methot, Smith, Neil, and Dziurzynski are more than enough to keep things in order.

IMO every Sens player currently on the roster is a better player than McCormick.

McCormick has another year on his deal after this one so you'd have to keep him around next year as well.

As I recall reports were claiming Turris was asking for something in the $3M- $4M range.

Prior to him being traded he signed a two year deal for $1.4M/year.

When I see ROR sign a deal for two years at a reasonable dollar amount, I will agree he is wanting out for whatever reason.

Until then I am assuming this holdout is all about ego and money.

Neil is at 62 pims in 17 games already he only had 178 pims all of last year

Its not that people see the Sens as soft its giving Neil the same break he had last year with Carkner and Konopka..

Sens player currently on the roster is a better player than McCormick

Maybe not ..not every player brings that type toughness grit and heart

Take it for what its worth. But on the pregame show yesterday, Donovan said that everyone he talks to in the Western Conference says O'Reilly projects to be a #1 Center. I dont know if that is from scouts, coaches or players??

CBC (even though they suck, besides Friedman) were calling ROR a #1 center.

An ex nhler saying he could be a #1 centre, yet half the posters here claim we don't need him and that our prospects are better. Ya that sounds about right

We don't need a #1 center. We have one. Unless you want to trade him in the deal...

O'Reilly is a #1 center in the making, that does not mean he will play #1 center minutes on this team. In a perfect scenario he plays 3rd line C in a Jordan Staal role behind Spezza and Turris.

He'll only be the 3rd line center on paper. He'll play 14-15min of even strength icetime, with #1 PP and #1 PK time.

I see ROR more as a #2 center, but I agree with the Staal roll. I'm not sure about #1 PP, but certainly #2 PP. the deeper the team, the more we spread it around. The Sens had Alfredsson, Hossa and Havlat on the right side for years, but all three got PP time and plenty of ES minutes (maybe not the same quality linemates at times, but if the team is deep, not a big deal). And it's easier to move a center to the wing for a period, versus the other way around.

Ideally you spilt your top 6 skilled guys across the top 3 lines, and then let the top 6 come together for two loaded PP units. This makes for better balance and hitting the other team in waves.

That said, with Spezza, Turris, Da Costa, Zibanejad, Smith, O'Brien, Grant and Pageau, not to mention Hoffman who can also play center, all young (except Spezza) and at the pro level it would seem trading for another young center isn't necessary, even if you believe you can never have too many good ones.

Of course, I'm sure Murray likes the idea of landing him. He is different than most of our other centermen, and could be a good compliment to Spezza and Turris in our top 9, not to mention the insurance in scoring depth when one of those guys goes down.

Really, we'd have to get rid of Spezza in order to have ROR? Come on man! Yes, it is definitely ****** for the Pens to deal with having two #1 centers! It would be a luxury to have two number centers, the Sens could only be so lucky.

Everything I have read is he is looking for $5M for 5 years, which is more than anyone on the Senators not named Spezza, Karlsson or Gonchar.

He is also a better player (non-goalie) than anyone on the Sens that doesn't go by those names (and he's better than Gonchar).

Sorry I am not acting like ROR was playing on some super talented team.

What I am doing is not minimizing the opportunity he was presented with last season, which under normal circumstances he would never have realized.

I am also not giving him credit for what Landeskog achieved. What you are claiming about ROR is like saying Greening was the reason Spezza had a good year or Michalek scored 35 goals.

You're comparing Landeskog to Spezza? Sorry, but Landeskog is a great player and a finisher first and foremost. He's not a guy like Spezza (or in this case, O'Reilly) who makes the most out of his linemates (not in the sense we're talking about anyway). O'Reilly was the guy that made that line tick. Just ask the Colorado fans, anyway.

Either way you're marginalizing what O'Reilly did because he took his opportunity and ran with it putting up career numbers playing on an offensively inept team?

I have read your theories on converting Turris to the wing, but frankly your claims on this subject lack substance.

What substance do they lack? I've provided examples in the past of when he played wing and videos of him performing exactly what I described. Not really sure what else you want me to do. I can't go in and force Ottawa to play him on the wing to prove my point.

As well I have read your reasoning for O'Brien, however another LD isn't needed. O'Byrne, Elliott or Johnson at least would have appeared to fill a need.

O'Brien was listed as a throw in; I never discussed him so...what?

Now if you'd said "a shade worse defensively than Pascal Dupuis" that would have been more accurate, but less helpful to your argument.

Did he, or did he not, get nominations for the Selke? Just curious as to whether or not you can tell if your statement was factual.

Sorry but $5M is too much for a third line player when the cap is ~$64M.

Having three good centers doesn't necessarily guarantee championships. How many did Pittsburgh win with Crosby, Malkin and Staal?

They won a championship and went to the finals the year before. Then they had to deal with a multitude of injuries. It happens.

No, they didn't. They won it while Staal was on his ELC.

They had 14.7 mil towards the cap with Crosby, Malkin and Staal and that was when the cap was 56.8 mil. If O'Reilly is really asking for 5 mil we would be paying our 3 centres 15.5 mil with a cap of 64.3 mil.

We don't need a #1 center. We have one. Unless you want to trade him in the deal...

We don't need one, but we also don't have a prospect that projects to be one in the system and it never hurts to have more talented players in the top 6 or 9 of a team. Spezza isn't going to be playing for us forever, and with Turris moving to the wing O'Reilly can help in the now. It also significantly increases our chance of being able to withstand injury.

While I agree somewhat, keep in mind you are not trading for just another young center, you would be trading for a proven NHL player. The only proven centers on your list are Spezza, Turris, O'Brien and Smith, of which O'Brien has seen a fair amount of tiem on the wing and a little in the press box already this season. If you have a chance to get a young, proven, high calibre player like ROR (just like the trade for Turris last year) because of a sour situation, then you need to make an attempt!

i get the feeling he wants to get out of the avs so he doesn't play on the 3rd line.

and i guess spezza is sitting out the pp, unless you have ror playing wing which would be a waste from such a great player.

if we didn't have turris then i'd be on board the ror train. but there is no need to get him when we can use the same package to get a top 6 winger or more.

It is amusing if you think about it.

We get Turris because he wanted to play in the top 6.

Then we get O'Reilly because he wanted to play in the top 6.

So one of them doesn't get what they wanted and held out for?
