That is absolutely not true. We're not looking to make a big acquisition where any of those players will even be in the conversation, let alone the asking price. We're talking about third line rental players here. Third round pick plus a conditional fifth. Things like that.

yea only offer 3rd round picks and later for rentals........they need Miller to step in soon, likely next yr....Lindberg, Fast and Zuccarello are likely signed as soon as their season are over this yr( new rule )

They cant add salary to next yr. If anything they move out salary in Rupp to a cap floor team. I would be calling up Maloney and dealing Rupp , 3rd for Bissonette, Gordon........ something like that

I dont think Gordon is worth a 3rd but to move Rupp its worth it, saves cap space. Bissonette has one yr left but its cheap, Gordon is a UFA

Agreed, keep one 3rd (2 if the Columbus one does not work out ;) ) and unload some mid-level prospects plus the Rupp contract.

Get
1) 3rd pairing defenseman that can play 10-12 minutes (Sarich or Murray) a night asap in a trade.

2) Try to find a new "Avery" or "Prust" type (speedy, gritty, can pot 10-15, crowd pleaser, energy injection) in a longterm perspective through a trade hiding in some organization right now. Maybe a deal around Haley plus another prospect/lower pick in 2014 for this. Develop him slowly in CT first... A diamond in the rough gamble...
A deal Rupp for Bisonette in addition to this kind of trade is fine.

3) sign one more NHL vet guy asap for fwd depth out of the slim pickings available (D Moore would be optimal here but he might not be playing). Costs only money...

4) Pickup a scorer and/or a PP defender (choosing what is necessary at the time) at the deadline assuming we are playoff bound. Rental UFAs only. Use 3rd round pick(s) and prospect(s) here

5) If PP is still a disaster, bring over The Hobbit for a shot for the POs - if he is willing and able (KHL team eliminated, contract is agreed, National Team thing).

6) Bring over Fast and Lindberg for play in Hartford as soon as their teams are out of SEL playoffs. If either look good, put them on the NYR Black Aces squad in the POs. They are both signed already & burning a year on their ELC right now regardless.

Getting to the POs might be the biggest hurdle to climb over though

Rangers aren't in a position to do much now other than sign a UFA.

I'd target Antropov if the Jets start falling out of it. He shouldn't cost too much.

The problem is with the Rangers everyone knows how desperate they are for a #6 DMan and another scorer and everyone will be asking for their 2nd and 2 out of 3 of Kreider, Miller, Fasth which absolutely cannot and will not happen.

Still, coming into the season without a warm bodt as a #6 Dman if Torts had so little faith in Emminger is unacceptable.

This..the whole reason I proposed J Jokinen in the first place was because Antropov has a sturdy cap hit and he would likely cost much more to get.Would love Nik back in blue..rounds out our center depth tremendously because he and Richards can switch between 1 and 2C if need be. Boyle + 2nd + prospect gets it done if WPG is out of it early?

J.Jokinen is sucking right now but may be worth a shot. They would have to take Rupp back though. 3 Million hit for next yr stinks. I wouldnt deal Boyle for him, its a lateral move, team needs to add without giving up much.

Antropov is atleast a UFA. We have been down this road before though. Antropov as a UFA should cost less than Jokinen no?

Antro is a UFA so his cap hit is fairly irrelevant. Jokinen's is only 1M lower and it stays on the books. Antro is also a much better fit for the bottom six and more of a Torts guy.

when he was on TO the cost was a 2nd so what is it now? Down to a 3rd?

im sure the Jets want to dump Hainsey and his contract. Maybe the Rangers can take that back with Antropov as rentals ? Send them one of the extra D so Eminger/Gilroy , Rupp , a 3rd plus mid level minor leaguer?

I would like to have Antropov back, though that might put me in the minority. He would bring a lot of what we lost with Anisimov, and killed penalties regularly for the Jets.

I believe he played well under Tortorella in his limited time here, as well.

Jokinens value is low right now and could probably be had for scraps. I think with a change of scenery Jokinen is exactly the type of player the Rangers need for their top 6. Adds speed some hands and at the very worst case scenario hes worth his weight just for the shootout points you know he'll bring. Rupp + 2nd? Its definitely a bit of a gamble but I really think Jokinen proves to be a weapon for us with our current top 6

You would trade for Antropov and slot him in the bottom six..? Please tell me youre joking. The love that Stepan gets around here is ridiculous..

Antropov is a bigger version of Anisimov with a better shot and better vision. Would love to have Nik back

You're in danger of turning into an agenda poster. Antropov worked best as a winger while he was here, and I think lining him up on the 2nd line LW, or the third line RW would be the best places for him. If they're interested in paying him at center it would likely be on the third line.

That said, we're a long way away from reinforcements, we need to win with what we have right now.

Yeah, the same Antropov who had 35 points in 69 games. Equates to 41 points in 82 games. Stepan had 51 points. He had 1 assist in the first 8 games. So enough with the Stepan hate. And yes, he has been playing like poop, but please, just stop with the needless Stepan bashing.

Why thank you for looking out for me, but You're in danger of me not caring in the least bit what you or anyone else believes I'm "turning into." I love the NYR and Stepan is not a 2C plain and simple. If everyone wants to believe that one year of 50 points riding shotgun with Gaborik makes him a bonafide 2C then congrats but the fact is that this kid is of absolutely no offensive threat to the opposition. Why wouldn't I explore trades that fix a major problem on this team? And believe me I'm praying that Stepan receives a set of hands and a new pair of skates overnight but barring a miracle either J Jokinen and especially Antropov are better options at 2C.

I agree with this sentiment, more or less. I have no problem with making a move for a talented youngster that needs a shot, like the aforementioned Loktionov.

This team has a pretty solid roster. There are really only two weaknesses that standout:

-we could use another viable defenseman to take the spot that otherwise would be filled by the sorely missed Michael Sauer, as none of Bickel, Eminger or Gilroy are good enough to play for a Cup team.

-Brian Boyle is a 4th liner in this league. He doesn't bring enough offensively to be a third line center, and his continued inability to consistently use his size and strength defensively hampers an otherwise solid defensive game.

I don't know that Antropov would solve that problem; he's a lot more talented offensively than Boyle, but he brings the same question marks defensively.

I continue to want to see more playmaking from Stepan, but I'm not ready to throw in the towel on him. He's still too young to believe that this is it for the kid. He was simply too good in college as a decisive, smart creator on offense.

Well I'm viewing an Antropov acquisition in terms of what it could do to boost the lineup, not to replace Stepan.

As I said earlier, in anticipation of keeping Gaborik, i'm more interested to see if we can flip Stepan and Girardi/Staal to land a young star center on his ELC, who could eventually be groomed to outright replace Richards. A Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, for example

Somewhat unrelated, but how about Cody Conacher right now? Kid is on fire.

Wonder how many points Nik would have put up centering Gaborik last year. Stats dont tell the whole story..

Stepan didn't play the entire season with Gaborik. But thank you for making more pointless arguments.

You, Thunderhead, and Drew have some sort of agenda against Stepan.

Stepan played the majority of the year with Gaborik and Anisimov. Let me set the record straight..I have no agenda against Stepan whatsoever. There's not a single proposal I've made that has Stepan going the other way. He's going to straighten out his play theres no doubt in my mind and he's a young player who will only get better. But in todays NHL with the division we're in, Stepan is not a 2C caliber player plain and simple. Maybe in 3 or 4 seasons he will be, who knows. But this team has a window to win and its now and the very immediate future. Hank Richards and Gabby arent getting any younger and we don't have any elite forward prospects in the pipeline save possibly Miller.

Antropov and J.Jokinen are not 2C's either. In fact, they're not even centers at all.

Both are clear cut offensive upgrades to Stepan. Whether they slot in at C or the wing makes no difference to me so long as Stepan gets moved to the 3rd line. Jokinen was drafted as a C and Antropov is certainly capable of playing C. This notion that NHL players forget how to play positions they grew up playing is delusional

No they are not. Both are older, by 10 years or so, and both had less points than Stepan last year. Brandon Sutter was Carolina's 2C ahead of Jokinen last year. Both players are better one the wing. Stepan is not being moved to 3C if either of those two was acquired. Antropov can probably be had for a 3rd. Stepan's value would be significantly higher than that.

Jokinen and Antropov would be nice on the wing with Stepan, or if you want them at center, they would be good enough to push Boyle to the fourth line. That is all that they would be able to do.

Sting, in your opinion, what's wrong with the PP and how would you go about fixing it?

Has nothing to do with forgetting to play center. They're just not cut out for it at this level. This notion that being drafted as a center means you should be a center is delusional.

So....you think Stepan isnt a 2nd line producer so the solution should be to compound the problem by acquiring more people you'd ultimately question -- even if they're not centers? That makes a lot of sense.

You might want to think about this a bit further.

Completely disagree with the bolded. What does age have to do with it? J Jokinen would skate laps around Stepan. J Jokinen has a 30 goal season under his belt which Stepan will likely never sniff in addition to a 60 point year and multiple 50 point years. If I said to watch these 3 players and tell me which player poses the most offensive threat to the opposition you would really say Stepan? If you would theres no debating with you

Fact: Stepan was involved in more offense than both of them. If they pose such great offensive threat, don't you think that they would be able to out score Horrible Stepan?
