Some of us have been talking about trading Rupp for a cheaper 4th line option since the lockout was still on and the cap was rumored to drop to $60m next season. Let Boyler have his moment.
The next Sean Avery. The new Brandon Prust. Who would be this diamond in the rough guy we could pry for cheap from some unknowing GM that could bring that spark and light up the Garden? We need someone like this, a new injection. Not a 30 goalscorer, but a little, pesky guy that gets the team and thefansto rise to the occasion. Not a goon, but a scrappy, fast, gritty guy that can pot 15 iin a full season and still get in the other teams faces. We lack this kind of player altogether now (Asham/Haley?), but we sure have gotten accostomed having to one. We gave up minor scraps for both Avery and Prust, go get em Glen! This is the kind of player we need now, in addition to a #6 defender playing 10 minutes plus and another depth guy scoring a few. Trim some fat now...

Agreed, keep one 3rd (2 if the Columbus one does not work out ;) ) and unload some mid-level prospects plus the Rupp contract.

Get
1) 3rd pairing defenseman that can play 10-12 minutes (Sarich or Murray) a night asap in a trade.

2) Try to find a new "Avery" or "Prust" type (speedy, gritty, can pot 10-15, crowd pleaser, energy injection) in a longterm perspective through a trade hiding in some organization right now. Maybe a deal around Haley plus another prospect/lower pick in 2014 for this. Develop him slowly in CT first... A diamond in the rough gamble...
A deal Rupp in this kind of trade is fine.

3) sign one more NHL vet guy asap for fwd depth out of the slim pickings available (D Moore would be optimal here but he might not be playing). Costs only money...

4) Pickup a scorer and/or a PP defender (choosing what is deemed necessary at the time) at the deadline assuming we are playoff bound. Rental UFAs only. Use 3rd round pick(s) and prospect(s) here

5) If PP is still a disaster, bring over The Hobbit for a shot for the POs - if he is willing and able (KHL team eliminated, contract is agreed, National Team thing).

6) Bring over Fast and Lindberg for play in Hartford as soon as their teams are out of SEL playoffs. If either look good, put them on the NYR Black Aces squad in the POs. They are both signed already & burning a year on their ELC right now regardless.

Getting to the POs might be the biggest hurdle to climb over though

Yeah, Boyler should have his moment as he called the player. Outta nowhere.

Relax guys !!! It is all good...give everybody that is old enough to have one a beer . Heck with it...give them one too LOL !!!

I still have my sights set on Iginla. I will rarely get latched onto a player but I've always loved Iginla, his game would fit in great here. And yes I know we might not have what it takes to get him or that we will be willing to give up what it takes, BUT I do believe sather will be in on him at the deadline.

As well as a #6 defenseman.

I like all the moves today. I thought Palmieri should've been with the big club with the injuries and then sent down, but I'm not upset over it. Mashinter will add toughness against the upcoming rivals. Hopefully Powe can inject that spark into the game and grab momentum a lot like dubinsky and prust could and would do.

Ryan Whitney has battled foot/leg injuries for most of the last few years. Whitney hasn't been very good for Edmonton. Healthy scratch.

Krueger won’t get into specifics but Whitney, whose strength is his passing ability, likely isn’t moving the puck crisply enough for the coach with the more upbeat Oilers’ style. He might be slowing the game down, too often. And, he is also not getting in the face of opposing forwards quick enough for the coaching staff. His game seems fragile now.

“My job isn’t a popular one. It’s getting the message across,” said Krueger. “I don’t want to reveal the details of private conversations but there is an opportunity for growth. Our game has become much more aggressive. We’re trying to avoid all situations where the game stops and we’re trying to avoid controlled break-outs and controlled forechecks. We want to keep the pace up. It’s a transition for everybody and Ryan has to adjust as well as others. This is an opportunity to step back and work with the coaches and come back even stronger.”

http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2013/02/04/ryan-whitney-will-watch-canucks-game/

Whitney likes to slow the game down. Torts doesn't like that either. Whitney is a group III this summer.

Mark Fistric got hurt last night. He is a group III this summer. EDM traded a 3rd for him. A rental. Fistric would be a good fit for the Rangers.

I was watching the Dallas-Colorado game last night and I liked Shane O'Brien's game. In-your-face, decent defensively, has some poise with the puck, is a pain in the ass to play against. He would fit. He was playing LD.

If Mike Green didnt have such a high cap hit over the next couple years I would try to look at him. He has fallen off the map a bit, but he would still be a great power play qb for us and also a great mentor for Del Zotto. If he only had that high cap hit for this year I would offer something like Thomas + 2nd

Unless Torts was super happy with Gilroy's game, I wonder if he would consider trading for Yannick Weber or Raphael Diaz as that #6 defenseman. Give them top PP time and some even strength minutes. Total of about 8~10 minutes a game.

They would easily be the Rangers best offensive defensemen and help the PP with their shot and creativity.

We really need a guy who can play more than 8 minutes per game. A guy who can be relied upon not to make many mistakes and just keep things simple. If he can hit, great. If he can be part of the core moving forward, even better. While I would love a PP specialist, I don't think having a Weber or Diaz paired with Stralman would give us the cushion we need on the bottom pairing.

Overall, I've been really unimpressed with Richards ability to QB the PP since he arrived here. I'm not pinning the blame on him, but he's not particularly creative on the point and his one-timer has gone to hell. I keep seeing MDZ defer to him on a regular basis instead of taking control and running the show. Having two guys out there running the PP is almost as bad as having nobody to run it. Just leads to more confusion.

I have to agree. I don't understand it, because even when he had a dangerous one-timer, he still passed the puck a lot on the PP. Now, he hardly looks to pass. Every PP, it's shoot, shoot, shoot. Like he's taking his cues from the morons in the crowd.

Then again, the team's power play scheme in general continues to confound. Most of the time, of course, there is hardly any rotation, and the lack of crispness in passing continues to be frustrating as hell.

I would like to see him take a lot less shots in general and make a lot more passes. He was always an excellent passer, I don't get it. Nor do I get why Johnny Cakes would support this decision, as Richards' passing was a big part of Tampa's success.

Gilroy averaged 9+ minutes the last two games. And wasn't on the ice for a goal against.

Includes an embarrassing loss to the Penguins.

Knowing Deboer, we will match the CBGB line up against their top line.

Truth is, outside of their top 3, their offensive corps are pretty weak. The middle two lines may be strong defensively but they don't sound scary offensively in the slightest. That fourth line is hilarious.

Key to winning would be containing that top line.. which includes staying out of the box so we don't give them an extra 2 minutes of ice time.

Here's a "gem" from the Devils GDT which mirrors much of what I've been saying. Upgrade the top 6 Glen

Yes. Let's let Devils fans be the all-knowing gods when it comes to this Rangers team. They have Dainus Zubrus in the top line. They shouldn't be talking about forward depth.

Part of me thinks that Richie has benefited greatly from having guys like St Louis, Boyle, Eriksson and Robidas on the PP with him. They're all playmakers and can shoulder a lot of the responsibility with the man advantage. Perhaps Richie was a little more of a product of his surroundings than we care to admit? I don't know. He just seems to lack that extra dimension that I saw in Tampa and Dallas.

I agree that the "strategy" on the PP is more than a little perplexing. I honestly think a big part of it is that you're trying to shoehorn too many guys of the same ilk onto the same unit. Gaborik and Nash have historically played the same spot, and Richards and Del Zotto are passers who seem to think so similarly that it's actually a detriment to the flow of the attack.

It's one thing to stay in the same spot and make great passes, but, like you said, this team isn't even doing that. The best PP's I've seen are when the kids are out there. Hagelin is all over the place because the kid just can't stay in one spot for more than half a second. Stralman rips shots from everywhere. Stepan can really QB from the half-wall. Maybe it's time to shake it up and not simply rely on the big guns to try and figure it out.

Hagelin is hilarious on the PP, he zips from corner to corner behind the goal line with the puck. It doesn't look pretty, but it sort of wreaks havoc with the opposing box.

I was always convinced that Hags had no business on the PP since his game doesn't translate, but it seems like he forces his game onto the PP and it kind of works, but not in the way you really want your PP to work. There is no fancy movement from side to side opening up lanes for one timers. Instead it's Hags playing keepaway behind he net until he draws enough attention that someone else gets open.

Two first round picks? Where do you get this value from? He is not Hossa at age 30...coming off of huge seasons the prior two years. Iginla is 35 and a UFA at the end of the year. He will re-sign with calgary after the year.
