Rumor: Trade Rumour Thread I: Post-Lockout Madness

My gut tells me that Gaborik is traded at or before the deadline to re-acquire a 1st round pick in this draft coming up.

Cap will be at or close to 64 million with some very KEY RFA's to bring back.

assuming the cap is 64 million. the Rangers will have approx. 11 million to re-sign those guys and bring in other needed scoring/defence.

Can we do it without moving Gaborik? Probably. But it will be TIGHT.

Moving Gabby at the deadling with a full year under his belt can get us a very solid 1st rounder (anwhere between 10-20) a solid prospect and a roster player. Especially if he posts anothe pro-rated 40 goal season. That would make it 3 in 4 years with the Rangers that Gaborik would have scored 40 goals. That makes for a very attractive player out on the market.

I get the whole "if he's that good, we should keep him" argument. It has a ton of merit. But I subscribe to the theory that we should never lose an asset for nothing.

His walk year is also the year that Callahan, Lundqvist and Girardi also come up on UFA in addition to a slew of others not to mention that both Kreider and MDZ will be RFA's (MDZ WILL GET PAID).

Like I said, it's a gut feeling, but one that is logically thought out.

going to be a very interesting 2013 for the Rangers...for sure.

LOL what? I didn't even bother reading the rest after that clump of crap. The Rangers are going to trade their current leading goal scorer so they can get a 1st round pick because....you know...were rebuilding and also worrying about the cap next year even though we are cup contenders this year.

:shakehead:help:

Just wanted to add to the thought. This need and lack of a, I'll call it a puck skating rather than a puck moving, defenseman has been an issue since we traded Leetch in 2004.

Poti didn't work out for us, Ozolinsh, McCabe...

You'd think eventually the organization would want a legitimate puck skating defenseman in the lineup.

Considering they cost way too much on the trade and free agency markets, we should look into drafting one, soon.

Skjei is more of a McDonagh than a Leetch.

We need that speed and threat from the blueline. It would add a whole new dimension to this team's attack.

I do this all the time.

I meant draft.

Sometimes my head thinks one thing and my hands type another.

Here's a list of players who I think may be at least rumored to be available at or near the deadline depending on the teams that are out:

:edmonton
Ryan Jones
Ladislav Smid

:stars
Morrow
Ryder
Jagr

:leafs
Komisarek (may see the Leafs eat a portion of the salary)
Franson
Connolly
Steckel
Bozak
Gunnarsson

:habs
Cole
Bourque
Kaberle
Bouillon

:panthers
Weiss
Kopecky
Bergenheim
Mueller ?
Kovalev
Skille
Smithson
Jovanovski (+35)

:flames
Iginla
Babchuk
JBo
Comeau
Sarich

:jets
Antropov
Ponikarovsky

Wellwood
Hainsey
Montoya
Little (RFA)

:cbj
Prospal
Letestu
Aucoin
Brassard

Players I would take a look at are in bold. Of course there are others from other teams but I feel these are the teams with the best shot of NOT making the playoffs.

Staal and Del Zotto just had their best performance of the season as a pairing and people are breaking them up? Good lord.

Extremely small sample size.

Its fine to keep them together for at least Tuesday night to see if they consistently work well together.

Love Nash. Worth the 1st round pick. But...it sucks we don't have a 1st this June.

With what will probably (well, hopefully) be a late 2nd, it may be time to take one of those coveted around HFRangers Boards "risk-reward" type picks.

A kid by the name Will Butcher in the USNTDP is the kind of offensive talent from the blue line that this roster could use. Questions about his play in his own end, not uncommon for both a young defenseman and more specifically a puck skating defenseman. Wish he were a righty, but in any case, this could be the type of gamble worth taking this June.

Doesn't have to be him specifically. A talent like him should be looked at.

Butcher may be around later than the 2nd.

I'll keep them together for the rest of the year if it means keeping Gilroy out of the lineup. That guy brings nothing to the table.

Brings nothing except, skating and offense. Which is what's missing from the defense.

He carried the offense in Hartford while he was there.

You think maybe your bias against him is clouding your assessment a little? He has flaws. So does every other player on this roster. If you can counter act the weaknesses with other players' strengths, you find balance in a lineup.

Gilroy absolutely could provide something positive for this lineup. Its certainly worth a look. 3-5 minutes of Bickel/Eminger is the alternative. Which isn't exactly beating anyone as it is.

What offense? He's never put up respectable offensive numbers in 3 seasons in the NHL and was putting up average numbers in the AHL. He skates the puck to the other end and turns it over. He's lousy in his own end, has mediocre vision, a lousy shot, is weak on the puck, and can't hit or fight. What exactly makes him an upgrade over anyone on the roster?

If the Rangers were so impressed with what he brings to the table in Hartford, maybe he'd be seeing some ice-time instead of being passed over for guys like Eminger and Bickel. You comment on my "extremely small sample size" but for some reason feel that Gilroy's nearly 200 games in the NHL doesn't quite paint the whole picture? Sorry, that just doesn't make sense to me.

The guy is what he is at this point. Staal and Del Zotto looked fantastic the other night. I'd keep that pairing together even if they have a few bumps in the road.

Someone needs to explain to me why he was re-signed. I dont get it at all.

Depth for Hartford and a last resort call-up is all I can think of. Maybe they're concerned with the need for d-men around the league that he might not clear waivers?

Maybe Torts said "I need a guy like Gilroy who can actually contribute" and Slats said, "Here's Gilroy. Turn him into a contributor." :sarcasm:

We need somebody on the third pairing who can provide defense. Stralman can bring the O on that pairing.

Gilroy is unable to do that.

He's unable to play defense, either.

Still can't fathom what I saw in him. I defended him like whoa. He never made that, jump I expected him to. Physically, mentally, etc.

As of now, I'd rather have a meat&potatoes kind of guy who can at least be dependable in his own zone, instead of someone with more offensive potential but shaky defensively.

If Sather trades Gaborik for a first he should be fired on the spot.

If Sather trades Gaborik period, unless its for an up and coming star, he should be fired on the spot.

And if Sather trades Gaborik this year, when we're supposed to be competing for a cup, he should be fired on the spot.

I can't believe people are motioning to trade Gaborik. :shakehead.

He's ONLY scoring at a 1.6 PPG pace.

Prefacing, don't take any of this debate personally.

He was one of the Rangers best players in the playoffs a couple of seasons ago. He was fine in Tampa. And he was serviceable in Ottawa.

He scored 15 points in 30 games in Hartford this season, and a team leader in shots on goal. What offense?

While +/- isn't an end-all-be-all stat, for someone who is as bad as you want to make him out to be, he has never finished a season in the NHL with a sub 0 +/- rating. Coincidentally, the only time his rating was awful was this season in Hartford when the team it's self is not so hot.

If he's on the roster he should get a look. If not he shouldn't be on the roster, he should be playing somewhere.

That doesn't change the fact the Rangers do need a guy who can skate with the puck and contribute to putting pressure on the opposition. Too many slow skaters on this roster. Eventually the Rangers are going to have to accept a player with some flaws and let their skill set do what it can. It's a role that's been vacant for nearly a decade.

A year ago, I wouldnt be surprised by the trade Gaborik talk. The dudes a lethal goal scorer, but overall a soft player and I dont think Torts really appreciated that. Torts' reason comments about how Gaborik's attitude and approach has changed will likely go a long way in his future with the team.

Gaborik wont get traded this year - thats ridiculous.

But if the cap issue is a serious problem next summer, I can see it happening easily. Its going to be a tight fit.

Jones is out multiple weeks with an eye injury, but if he can come back healthy, he is the prototypical type of forward the Rangers should be in the hunt for.

Then again, I think its pretty obvious the trade market this season is going to be severely diluted with the combination of OTL's and the shortened season - everyone will be in the hunt.

With the system NYR play, they should trade Staal and or Girardi long before a player who scores at the rate Gaborik does.
