If there's nothing out there, we need a steady top 4 dman to help our goaltending.
Fair point, I also forgot about the Canadiens playoff run in 2021- in my mind, their streak of playoff misses was a lot longer. Maybe they would move him.Couldn't tell you, but the other reason they move him is because Lane Hudson will fill his offensive role on the team.
Who the heck is Hauser?
I'm really really high on Oleksiak, he's big, skates well and appears to be a good puck mover.Fair point, I also forgot about the Canadiens playoff run in 2021- in my mind, their streak of playoff misses was a lot longer. Maybe they would move him.
I still have my eye on Oleksiak- I think he checks a lot of boxes.
That Drai gif is perfect for the joke above it lolz.Traded for Doogie Howser
Almost a hoser lolTraded for Doogie Howser
Outside of obviously being big, does he really skate well and can move the puck?I'm really really high on Oleksiak, he's big, skates well and appears to be a good puck mover.
Again, I go back to Sid's Oilersnation article about the defenseman and the metrics point to a player, Oleksiak, who's a good puck mover, he might make a great fit with Nurse.Outside of obviously being big, does he really skate well and can move the puck?
If so, that fits the mold of what nurse needs to have as his d pairing for the pairing to succeed. Nurse always works best with players that can transition the puck cleanly without turnovers
Jamie Oleksiak

Jamie Oleksiak is a 32-year-old defenceman on the Seattle Kraken with a $4.6M cap hit for two more seasons including this one. He ranks 13th on Chris Johnston’s Trade Board on The Athletic. Oleksiak also fits Stauffer’s description from above like Matheson, and I’d argue that Oleksiak might be better.
At a towering 6’7’’ frame, Oleksiak is a quality two-way defenceman with strong results at both ends of the ice. Though his production is unimpressive, it seems to be more attributed to his forward linemate quality as suggested by Oleksiak’s passing microstats. His scoring chance assists per 60 rate ranks in the 71st percentile, and his passed zone exit per 60 rate ranks in the 84th percentile, ranking higher than every Oilers defenceman but Evan Bouchard.
Defensively, Oleksiak uses his size to consistently step up the blueline, possessing a great 12% entry denial rate. This is perhaps the biggest advantage he possesses over Matheson. Oleksiak also possesses a slightly better loose puck retrieval success rate in the defensive zone than Matheson.
Furthermore, Oleksiak has plenty of experience against top opposition and can play both LD and RD, which could give the Oilers numerous options. Given his puck-moving and entry-defending abilities, he seems to be a strong fit with Darnell Nurse on paper, but he could easily slot in as 3LD next to Ty Emberson as well.
Unfortunately, his results in 2024-25 specifically have been subpar, but given his strong track record and microstat profile, I still believe Oleksiak remains one of Edmonton’s best defensive targets out there. They should highly consider him.
If Frederic is 3C, we could either push Henrique down or have him on the 3rd line too. That’s a pretty heavy line
Right. I forgot about Sid’s article. That would be a big pairing to play against for sure. Still would like a goalie thoughAgain, I go back to Sid's Oilersnation article about the defenseman and the metrics point to a player, Oleksiak, who's a good puck mover, he might make a great fit with Nurse.
This is what I’m afraid of.My ideal bottom six would be something like this:
Frederic-RNH-Perry
Janmark-Henrique-Brown
Nuge might actually do something in that role, and we already know what that fourth unit can do in the ploffs. Janmark could sub out for Jones if Knoblauch feels he needs even more heaviness in a game/series.
But that still raises the question of what to do with the mess that is McDrai, Hyman and a pile of crap. If we could get just one real top six winger to pair with Leon I really feel like the rest would fall into place but Frederic looks to be "the" move right now and that's just not enough.
Frederic could be Oilers Evan RodriguesThis is what I’m afraid of.
Yeah, I think the Oilers need to push HARD for Vejmelka before the Nyotes Re-sign him, Skinner and 2027 1st?Right. I forgot about Sid’s article. That would be a big pairing to play against for sure. Still would like a goalie though
Ita going to be someone who can play both sides.. so sadly not CarloMy guess on who we get for defence: Brandon Carlo, Connor Murphy or Brian Dumoulin.
What interests me is we were scouting Buffalo. Reporters are saying we want a left handed Dman who can play left or right side. Does Byram play both sides?
At 9.25M per , Nurse needs to work with any partner given. This narrative needs to stop. Nurse doesn’t do well with stay at home d men- he needs a puck mover. His game is significantly better if he plays with someone who can retrieve pucks and outlet them
GoalieFrederic could be Oilers Evan Rodrigues
James Reimer is cooked. He is in no way better than either Stu or Pickard. He'd be a decent option as a #3 if we had to bring one in, but he's not going to supplant what we already have, or improve our situation. The ideal goalie out there is Gibson. Bring him in as #1, keep Stu as #2, and slide Pickard through waivers to bring up if we need to. The only obstacles there of course are cap space, and Verbeek's asking price. Consolation prize is Vejmelka, but I expect he extends, and if he doesn't, I expect we lose him in free agency or have to pay him a boatload to keep him, which is why I have Gibson over him.Praying we get a goalie AND Carlo/Oleksiak/Connor Murphy/Matheson/Dumoulin/whichever Top-4 D can be had.
If we have to dig in the gutter for goalies and have zero money or assets, then get James Reimer for a late pick and Delia. Yes, even Reimer, who just had an .800 last night, is better than Stu. I don't think people realize how quickly Skinner would be AHL-bound anywhere else. At least getting Reimer is better than praying for Stu to become an average NHL goalie. Say what you will about Reimer, but he's held down an NHL job for over a decade.
Personally, I'd try to snag someone like Soderblom or Merilainen and see where that goes... Schwartz won't have enough time to completely ruin them after the deadline and during the playoffs.
More like we need goaltending to help our D-men, but a top 4 D-man would be nice to have once our net has been upgraded.

We can keep on saying that all we want, and he's done very well all year this year even with Stecher and Klingberg, but we saw the reality of what Nurse and a bad partner (Ceci) is. We've never really seen Nurse with a capable 2nd pair defenseman long term, and it makes the team better to have a better player with him. So an Oleksiak/Murphy/Dumoulin type (not sold on Dumoulin being any better than Ceci was personally) is still going to make the team better, as long as that player can play better than Klingberg has.Ita going to be someone who can play both sides.. so sadly not Carlo

Absolutely. I also found it interesting that during his interview with Seravalli, Bowman pushed the old line that you need "two teams" to win in the NHL- 1 to get you to the playoffs, and 1 to win in the playoffs.I'm really really high on Oleksiak, he's big, skates well and appears to be a good puck mover.
