its a huge stretch. Ekholm has been one of the best EV d in the league for a stretch, that player card has Walman at 36% for EV defence. Jfresh said hes poor on rush defence and another scouting report said all positive offensive stuff but that hes a turnover machine.

The fit doesnt seem ideal given the teams current weaknesses but ultimately he is a high quality player (especially offensively) so fit or no fit he'll be better than several of our other options which means we have improved as a team.

Still very worried about how our combination of RD + Goaltending is supposed to keep pucks out of the net against elite teams abd elite PPs.
lol- don’t use JFresh. NHL_sid is better. I haven’t seen anywhere that he is a turnover machine. From Sid- he has an excellent first pass, great shot, pretty good defender, not a great rush defender. Walman was also only a -1 on that San Jose team.

The way the Oilers play- they need better transition. Coffey and Knob are all about moving it fast out of our zone and he does that

Don't want to sound so negative about this acquisition. But what does Walman bring to the table that we don't already have? I don't know much about this player.
He is a way better 2nd pair than Klingberg. He is a legit top 4. Moves the puck well, good skater, great shot. Apparently he is super competitive and willing to get his nose dirty. I think this is the perfect partner for Nurse to be honest

Transition is important but so is defending the net and calm feet under pressure. We have basically nobody on the right side that we can be confident trotting out against the VGK or FLA top unit in the playoffs, and Skinner in net. To me that gives us relatively poor chance of advancing regardless of how well we transition the puck.

We are a Parisian Bakery lately with the quality of the turnovers we're churning out in zone.

Like I said, I heard the Oilers had some of their own Analytics that suggested their own goalies are playing better than the analytics we see.

But to answer your question: I guess there isn't a "good enough" upgrade that makes sense? They really dropped the ball with Blackwood
They did drop the ball with Blackwood. What analytics are they looking at? My guess is they see Stu has decent save % on high danger chances but isn’t so great on low danger- and that is something they can fix? It’s the low danger goals that kill a team, though

Stetcher could just hit waivers.

Source is my collective ass but I've also had a feeling for awhile that Emberson and the Oilers aren't on the same page contract wise.
Emberson fired his old agent back in December, I think he wants more money with the rising cap. Could be unrelated but pretty big coincidence.

So... do you run these combos?

Ekholm Bouchard
Nurse Walman
Kulak Emberson
Klingberg
Stetcher
Dermott
Brown
Honestly, I flip Nurse and Ekholm. Helps the new guy acclimate with a very predictable partner, Ekholm needs a minute reduction to stay as fresh as possible for playoffs, and Nurse-Bouch have great results this year in their limited time together.

He's an American too, given the current climate and his contract status I wonder if actually does want to go elsewhere.

Bouchard did pretty well. “Defending the net” is a very overrated notion. The best defenders in the league right now are neutral zone defenders who can deny the zone and transition up the ice. Hughes, Makar aren’t net front defenders- they are great puck retrievers and excellent at exiting the zone. Bouchard is right up there with him. The Oilers got in trouble with Florida last year not because of net front defence- it was because only Bouchard could successfully exit the zone. Broberg had the highest efficiency- but he barely touched the puck. A second transition dman is huge.

Knobs system is positional. Box out in front. Walman is decent at that and will get better on the Oilers

I'm shocked at peoples reaction on here. Why would you not want Jake Walman lmfao? I Wanted a goalie too but Gibson got hurt last night. So unless you wanted Mrazek, who would you trade for in net?

What's wrong with getting a top 4 Dman for a conditional 1st and a prospect?

Remember how the pundits were saying that they expected him to be signed around the turn of the new year? I wonder if he might be part of an upcoming deal?

In December there was a public narrative of a lot of mutual interest and expectation that a deal would be made rather quickly. After that nothing happened, Emberson randomly changed agents and everyone just stopped talking about it.

To repeat myself, pure speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if he was moved tomorrow in whatever deal they want to make for a forward.
