Ya if Duchene and Stone are gone at the deadline this is going to be a nightmare for 5-10 years.

Especially with how Brown is developing. He was supposed to be a blue chipper but I’m not seeing much there.

Add in the no 1st this year and we will basically be Arizona 2.0.

Unfortunately we'd have to be able to re-sign Duchene and Stone, sign the odd guy in the offseason, as well as make trades that aren't completely about shedding salary. If we were a normal NHL team sure we could compete in 3 years, unfortunately that's not in the cards for us.

I think re-signing Duchene and Stone is fairly easy. Even for Dorion.. They were reportedly close with Stone anyways, now they can dangle the captaincy in front of him. He'll be here for 8 more years I have full confidence in that.

Duchene is the harder one.. We have to play off how close it is to his home in Halliburton. I think he likes being in Ottawa, and would have no issue re-signing.

Now obviously the biggest obstacle in either of these is Melnyk..

But like it or not, he has been doing some right things lately.. Including expanding the front office and scouting rooms. Investing in the on-ice product is the next step, and Stone and Duchene are easy slam dunks for him to make, if he has any interest in winning back the fan base.

(Yes yes I know he wouldn't commit to Karlsson. But thats a whole other case, that includes a conflict in personalities.)

3 things any NHL'er wants as they approach free agency.
1. Market value
2. Term
3. A chance to win Lord Stanley!

Guys like Stone and Duchene can get the big bucks and term with many other teams in the league.
A viable offer from the Sens would have to be there in order to have them remain as Sens.
Tax advantages in other cities would boost salaries even more and provide them with more financial security long term.

Loyalty to this organization given its most recent history is out the window. Waving a "C" in front of Stone isn't going to make any difference.

If there are rumblings from within that EM can't possibly hold on as a sole owner, as debt and loans rise then there might be a chance for the Sens renaissance with these 2 guys at the core.

Ottawa unless it becomes a disaster
Dorion is a full blown liar, he's the only one who said that they were close to a deal with Stone so I don't believe it for one second.

For sure. If they were actually close it would have been done. One way to massively soften the Karlsson blow would have been to trott out Stone immediately with a new 8 year deal and a C on his chest. It didn't happen because Stone being close to signing here long term was just another bullshit lie.

or he sees it as an easy opportunity to be the go to guy for an nhl franchise

its like any other professional job. Stone now has more leverage to make more money here and to be the defacto captain of the team launching his career

See my last post.

But if you want to be full on negative about the team be my guest. But it is very reasonable to see both re-signing here long term

I think I was one of the most positive posters this summer so I resent your implication.

I admire your optimism in the face of disaster though, but I'm done hoping and being let down.

That isn't an unreasonable assumption but Stone is one of the best wingers in the League, he can do better than the Melnyk Cheapskates.

He is probably like the 20th best winger in the league?

Stone seems to have the most to gain by staying imo and he knows the city really well

Easily the best RW who will hit UFA. He'll get a lockout protected contract and thus more money all while playing for an organisation that wants to be competitive.

Him staying means he gets to be the Captain and that isn't nothing but being the Captain of the farm team of the NHL isn't great.

To me being the go-to guy in Ottawa doesnt sound like anything easy in the current environment. Stone will have seen how go-to guys are treated in this organization...

Stone will be able to make much more money than Melnyk will be offering if he just goes to free agency (even without considering the increase in salary that playing for a US team would bring)

I like your optimism. Unfortunately my hope level is way down right now. I have no faith in the duo of Dorion and Melnyk on making solid hockey decisions.

Definitely. If you're giving Stone an 8 year deal, it would have made all the sense in the world to have it start this year. Most guys who sign these big deals get around 10M in bonus money up front when the deal starts. If we were serious about signing Duchene or Karlsson, we'd want that 10M coming out this year before one of those other guys were due theirs in 2019.

It ain't happening. Stone and Duchene will be dealt at the deadline for disappointing returns.
