so, if the cap floor is around 60 mil next year, I think to break even with revenues this past season, we'd need to sell about 12400 tickets per game. That's a loss of about 3500 tickets a game (assuming average ticket price of 54 bucks a game, and not accounting for parking and concessions).

I think that would have been easily attained if the team was doing a purposeful rebuild instead of a circus act. Had we come out with a proper plan and not had this circus going on, fans would support a cap floor rebuild imo but with an owner threatening relocation, an AGM getting arrested for sexual harassment and wives cyberbullying one another, there's no way.

I don't think the team is 'rebuilding' as such. That would suggest that there is a plan to get back to respectability at some point. We don't have the resources or the people in place to rebuild. Or to contend for that matter! This is just simply a team in survival mode. When you've got insiders reporting that the talk in hockey circles is about Melnyk relishing' the opportunity to get to the cap floor and just 'see what happens' what other conclusion can you come to?

If I get a sledgehammer and start smashing holes in the walls of my condo just to 'see what happens' I wouldn't say that I'm renovating, if you know what I mean.

And of course the lazy narrative is going to turn into "Ottawa fans won't support a rebuild because they're too demanding, so why do they deserve a team?"

I think at this point the rest of the league's fans and the media have come to understand our plight.
Don't get me wrong – I agree. There'll be a good amount of sympathy now. But I'm thinking long-term. Next time things are going poorly, and the team starts considering a teardown, people won't care to dig deeper. They'll look at this rebuild, see the low attendance numbers, and spout something meaningless about Ottawa's fans not being devoted. Keep in mind this is the same industry that slagged Toronto fans for supporting terrible teams and not voting with their wallets during the JFJ and Muskoka Five years.

If there's one thing the lowest common denominator sports journalists love, it's a hot take.

So what I truly really do not understand is why they wanted players back for Hoffman then. There is no direction whatsoever.
