Why would Spezza come here, he wants to win a Cup. He was here and wanted to stay but Melnyck wouldn’t pony up, why come back? Makes zero sense
I want to win a cup as well but I am having a hard time getting any of the contenders to sign me. If he's waived and the Sens take him , is he going to retire?

Can't help but wonder if the Blues know something medically the rest of the league doesn't.

Not saying the kid is injured right now, but perhaps their doctors think his knee might not survive a long career effectively. Could be the old adage of trading a guy a year (or, in this case, 3 years) early instead of a year too late.
He has lost a couple of steps.

He actually asked to be moved.

T.O.
They shouldn't be waiving him, they should be doing what they can to trade him to a place he wants to go. Kinda s***ty to sign him in his home town and then waive him where he can't control his destination. It's not like he's making big bucks.

Leafs were dumb to think he'd be a good fit as a 4th line centre.

He actually asked to be moved.

No he didn’t, he asked for a contract and was told no. So then he said ‘okay, let’s make this worth for both sides’

Let’s not complicate this - Murray was amazing and deflecting negativity away from Melnyck when he wouldn’t pay up it was being a do key, and that’s why Murray’s in the ring of honour and Alfie was called unloyal.

Spezza wanted to stay, but you can’t play without a contract.

Why would the Sens want him, they want speed, they have Logan Brown to run the PP and do blind pass giveaways and play weak neutral ice.

Spezza is a poor hockey player now, why would Ottawa bring him back?

Spezza still has skills and would be a good mentor. I think he still has enough game to play here and contribute. I would rather have him than Anisimov personally.

Ideally, keeping Pageau and moving Tierny is the best move. But at this point, I'm no sure if anyone wants him. Perhaps Tierny's sell high date was back in the summer.
Hard to say I think there is a market for him. HF fans vs NHL gms would likely be at odds on that one in general. He is a good depth C that is an RFA and has hit 40 pts in his last 2 years.

I watched a few games last year with Spezza, not impressed. Standing still on a PP he can do something, but we don’t need him for that, we have Brown and Tierney to help with that - and his hand skills might still be decent but his leg skills are very bad. He can’t keep up

Pretty good penalty killer too. I'd like to keep him, but I just don't know where to play in the future with Brown, White and Pageau down the middle.

I don't know if I would trade him for picks. I'd try to look for a defenseman or winger of similar caliber and age.

If by "desperate fans", you actually mean "Shawn Simpson", then sure.

Ok, and the other 9000 are Sens fans, pining at another piece of nostalgia. He has nothing to gain, to wear 19 here in the twilight of his career. Nothing. He left as a captain, a superstar, and to come back as 4th line spare parts player will only sully his reputation as what he once was. We have too many bodies as is, and we have young guys that need to play. If he wants to sit behind the bench, and do stuff like Chris Kelly and Clarke MacArthur did, then I am all for it

Unless he can player coach out his last contract and then transition into the staff.

It would be a great intro for him to start in the locker room for 3/4 of a season and then move to the coaching or development side.

He’d be known and know the young players which would be a great start. He’s a Sens legend, as few as we have, and it would be nice to start integrating these guys back into the organization. Neil and Phillips and Spezza are good starts.

JC Beaudin doesn't need to be here. If the plan currently is for Beaudin to stay, bringing Spezz back and sending Beaudin down is a no brainer. I would much rather have Spezza around Logan Brown than Beaudin.

The corpse of Chris Kelly came back and played 4th line mins and was a healthy scratch in the playoffs, he passed along a lot of his knowledge to the kids, including some faceoff tips that were key to us doing so well against Bergeron and Crosby at the dot. I think there's value to be had for the team with Spezza here, and I think he full well knows he isn't a top 6 forward anymore.

Beaudin is better suited to 4th line mins, but Spezza imo has the potential to add long term value after he's gone based on the knowledge and experience he can pass on. If he's open to that role, I'd claim him in a heartbeat.
