I would say no way they keep Richards. He'll be 34 in May. He's still productive, but can you take that gamble for 6 years? I say not a chance. But they'll have to pay his replacement similar money.

Drury and Parrish were physical players?
They both played a style that would take a physical toll on their body, yes. Drury led his team in forward blocked shots basically every year they were tracked. He wouldn't shy away from throwing his body around, either. Mark Parrish lived in front of the opposing goalie. He took a beating.

point well taken in regards the number of games required for a championship. But even in the NHL, they are teams who get on runs and make it to the conference finals, finals. Nearly every year a 7 seed takes out the a 2, or in the second round, a 5-7 seed takes out the 1st seed. When dominoes start falling like that, it opens the doors for other teams. One team gets to avoid another team that they have fits with etc…

To the guys who said he is personally offend at the 1 cup in 74 years. As bad as some of sathers decisions have been. You can't say he was responsible for those 74 years and you can't say gordie clark or gorton are to blame for that. And how many times in those 74 years had the Rangers even made it to the second round. We look at it as fans and a guy like Gordie Clark looks at it, like this is his profession. If he has a team reach the conference finals and then the 2nd round the next year, in a sub-par year. He legitimately felt that way. I legitimately thought they had a terrible year. It is what it is. We really do look at things differently.

In regards to roster make-up, every year you get to add a couple players, you buyout richards, you have that money, caps going up, even with all the resigning, you still enough cash to bring in a player or two. You have prospects who you hope a couple of them push themselves onto the roster. You hope you draft roster players going forward. Just bc I want to see the Rangers keep Callahan, Girardi, AND stralman, doesn't mean I think or am saying we are a top 5 team in the league. Why does everything have to be absolutes and extremes here

He doesn't look like a 6 m premium at age 33, I'll tell you that.

5-5.5 is my limit to him. 5.5-5.8 is my limit on Girardi. Those contracts aren't crippling and they're easier to trade if need be.

Neither is realistic or likely unfortunately. I just think that things don't always work out the way that you hope and because of that, there is an inherent need to mitigate the risk you're taking. That's my argument. I wouldn't mind if both are traded. I'd think it was a mistake, but I wouldn't be upset.

Im sure the Rangers' limits are pretty similar, but unfortunately the market likely won't bend to their wishes.

Quite frankly, Im not married to the idea of trading them or keeping them. I just think a decision needs to be made before the deadline.

I think the company line that the team is focused on winning the Stanley Cup and we'll take care of this in the summer is absolute garbage.

The team can compete without Ryan Callahan on this roster. He is the captain, but he produces at a tweener 2nd/3rd line rate and the 2nd liner is further than being a 3rd liner at this point. I do not like the Jaskin + 1st type trades unless we buy a rental who can slot into the 3rd line. We do have a shot to go on a deep run and making a move that does not add a piece to the NHL roster would hurt. A subsequent trade would be needed for a 3rd liner to fill a void in the lineup.

Girard I should be resigned. Many defenders can make it to their mid 30s and be effective. Girardi can do it. He relies on positioning.

So basically, Girardi isn't fleet of foot now, so when he slows donw, he will be very slow. Very similar to Volchenkov, McKee and Philips.

Do the math with their raises, Brassard, Hagelin, etc. There isn't much money left to bring in an impact player when you are paying guys like Girardi and Callahan like impact players. There's a salary cap

Where is the money coming from to upgrade the roster?

That's with Miller and Fast making the team, only (2) reserve players and Brassard taking less than his QO of 3.7 million.

It's awful. Sather and the front office put this team in a position where 7 players are hitting unrestricted free agency and 5 players are turning RFA in one summer.

If his intent was to deal with it this summer, that's just horrible planning and indicates an inability to look beyond this year. At least he locked up Lundqvist and dealt Del Zotto, but that barely put a dent in things in terms of filling out the roster after this season.

I mean I just asked my room mate and he argued for that line. Said there is no reason to tank this season when we're playing this well. We may not agree that his opinion is right, but it's still a legitimate sentiment and one I'm sure Sather is considering.

That may just be the reality of the situation. We'll have to bite the bullet here potentially.

So basically, Girardi isn't fleet of foot now, so when he slows donw, he will be very slow. Very similar to Volchenkov, McKee and Philips.

And those players were NHL caliber defenders. I don't have Girardi at 6.5. That is too much. I don't see how he makes more than 5.5. That 5.5 in a few seasons is a middle pair defenders money or more importantly a #3. Girardi can slot into that spot by then. 5 or 6 year deal. By year 3 or 4, he can play 2nd pair. Cap will be over 80 million by then. That falls in line with raises for other players hitting up a over the next couple years.

At this point Girardi should be priority #1. Stralman #2. Zuke #3. Callahan #4. All other RFAs and UFAs fall after. Keep the most valuable assets and least replaceable. Move more replaceable assets if you can and promote.

I tend to agree but I think that is what happens.

Rangers for the most part stick to the predetermined schedule of events set forth by the CBA.

I would not be surprised to see them not make a decision until the day before UFA officially opens, the day where teams can talk to any free agents but not sign them yet.

Really?--didn't bother to look up Parrish. I didn't care that much. But your comment about Drury throwing his body around is laughable.

So statistically--the NHL didn't track hits until after the lockout season. These are Drury's numbers.

Buffalo 05-06 81 games played 31 hits--14th best on his team.
Buffalo 06-07 77 games played 28 hits--20th best on his team.
Rangers 07-08 82 games played 46 hits--18th best on his team.
Rangers 08-09 81 games played 42 hits--20th best on his team.
Rangers 09-10 77 games played 67 hits--13th best on his team.
Rangers 10-11 24 games played 19 hits--25th best on his team.

Funny his hits take a spike upwards in 09-10 in the last full season of his career when he's all beaten up. This was hardly a guy throwing his body around with abandon. He didn't fight--neither did Parrish. Your other examples of Peca and Tucker were both agitators and they really did take a pounding. Both of them had a lot in common with Matt Cooke. They were just better players than Cooke but more or less the same mentality--dirty players who hurt a lot of other players with knee on knee and high hits and other teams eventually got their pound of flesh back.

I don't think you can give that kind of money to both Callahan and Girardi. Alex Steen is making 5.9 million and he has more goals than Callahan has points. Callahan making near 7 million is a complete sham. Let him go soak Buffalo for 6.5 -7 million a year. We can't afford to pay him that much.

Why the hell does Girardi get 5.5 when Dion just got 7? What makes Girardi worth 1.5 million less than Dion? You said it yourself, the cap is going up. If Girardi hits the open market he will be one of, if not THE BEST player available. Teams will have a ton of cap space with the cap going up and he is a RD which teams have major issues finding. There will be a massive bidding war for his services.

I've said all along that if Callahan wants Dustin Brown money or better, then he can walk.

Believe or not, he can be replaced.

You are cherry picking one statistic.

Drury blocked shots all the time. Same with Callahan. I think that was the link there, not hits. Either way, all it shows is that even with Drury not hitting as much as Callahan, his body failed him.

In regards to an impact player, maybe next year the rangers don't bring in an impact player. If you are able to resign Girardi and Stralman, well then your D is set for years. We are set there.

I'd like to have Boyle back. But Im thinking closing to 2mil a year. maybe 4-5 years.

Id have to say eventually, unless he blossoms and becomes consistent, Brassard is the odd man out and maybe its not next year. Maybe its the 2015 offseason, and then the Rangers have to either somehow try to get a 1center or keep stepan at 1c and find a 2nd line center with that.

additionally once your getting close to the 2015 offseason, then the question comes up about staal. IF stall stays then someone becomes expendable. Whether that be any of the 6 the rangers have now, or lets say Allen, MCI, or SKeji. IF staal leaves, you have his money to bring in players.

Also the cap will supposedly go up again next summer right.

So again I say, Im not gonna try to give a stanley cup roster for next year. Bc Im not gonna deal in absolutes and extremes, thats not realistic. But to say that adding a couple pieces here or there and upgrading here and there won't add up to a team that can win a cup within the next 3-4 years, isn't true either.

Eventually, yes. Right away? Not sure.

Does any one have a list of who are potential UFAs this year? Pouliot is a poor mans scoring threat. Can we find a poor mans Callahan to fill the gap for a year or two?

Drury blocked shots all the time. Same with Callahan. I think that was the link there, not hits. Either way, all it shows is that even with Drury not hitting as much as Callahan, his body failed him.

Callahan does both--hits and blocked shots. Callahan when healthy--easily over 200 hits every year. It would take Drury 4 or 5 seasons to register as many as Cally has done in one year.

That contract screwed us. How that buffoon got 7 million a year, I don't know. His game REGRESSED since his days in Calgary. He's an even worse skater now, his offense has gone down and his defensive game, although improved is not leaps and bounds above where he was in Calgary.

How he deserves to be paid anywhere close to what Suter and Weber are making is beyond me.

Panuef is a Pejorative Slur man. Talk about a lug head. You could tell what a doof that guys was on 24/7. That guy will never win and any team with him as their main piece will never win.

Steen? steens a great player. but if your gonna try say that Callahan is not of his caliber, then thats what I referred to in my 1st post, as shameful.
