If the NYR brass are putting DZ on a plate they either know something we do not about MDZ, players in Hartford, and/or RoR, possibly all three.

They clearly think MDZ is expendable and RoR is the real deal. They weren't willing to move him for Nash, but suddenly he is on the table for RoR? That says a lot to me about either how highly people in the organization think of RoR, or what has changed about potential replacements for MDZ in Hartford.

I would do this deal, if Sather can "Sather" it for lack of a better term. I am becoming much more trustworthy of this organizations decisions on trades after a lot of the recent moves that have made this team a lot better. They know what they have in Hartford, and they know who will be missed, or isn't worth giving up.

Sater did not offer MDZ, he asked for RoR and what it would take. Avs asked for MDZ + Kreider or Miller according to Dater.

If we trade Marc Staal to Carolina, I want Jeff Skinner back. Anything less than that is a no deal

a young player who already has injury concerns and concussion issues. no thanks... rather keep Staal....

Dater is a legitimate source, he is THE avs beat reporter.
Who do you think is closer to the truth,
him or this board?

He used the words... 'which may have been'

I'm not questioning the source... but that is the very definition of speculation.

We don't even know if there were serious negotiations or not. There may have been a quick phone call or days of negotiations... who knows? Perhaps something else would be coming with ROR. This is all speculation.

Also, no one is saying to get ROR at all costs... but Sather would be a fool not to kick the tires - find the asking price and contract demands... if they are somewhat reasonable, then you enter serious negotiations and see if something can be worked out...

According to the original source, talks ended after they started asking for more than MDZ and adding additional players. So if Sather didn't balk at the idea of them wanting a package around MDZ, I would assume he considered the idea instead of ending the talks right when they asked for MDZ.

He has a highlight video w/Offspring music... Get him :yo:

In all seriousness though - he'd be a Torts favorite with his 2-way defensive play. You have to at least make the call. Sherman is a pretty fair GM in trades though, so it may not work out. I'm sure there would be plenty of other suitors as well...

Fact of the matter is, Sather has earned a lot of benefit of the doubt based on his trading history. Based on that history, I am pretty confident that if the Rangers acquire O'Reilly+ from Colorado, they will have done so in spectacular fashion. Again, I would not do Del Zotto for O'Reilly straight up, but depending on what other pieces are involved, there is definitely some good potential.

As happy as I would be to keep Del Zotto, something built around Del Zotto + Boyle for O'Reilly + Elliot/Barrie is definitely intriguing and worth considering.

And considering the timing, it shouldn't be surprising that Sherman is looking to jack the price up right now. The trade deadline is still more than a month away. If a deal is to be made, it should be at Sather's terms, so if Colorado wants Del Zotto, they need to reengage talks when they realize that few teams have the young defenseman that they are apparently looking for.

I should say; as things currently stand we need MDZ more than ROR.

Unless Slats planned to deal Richards in that event. The possibility of adding 2+ mil in cap makes me concerned about how Sather rates our best goal scorer.

This.

I don't see a deal revolving around ROR making any sense if we're to give up a core roster player -- and to trade for ROR, we would have to.

EDIT: Unless that roster player is Boyle, because that would be a direct upgrade.

Stralman has not produced offensively as I would have liked this season. When the PP is functional DZ is usually a participant in it. I get that Staal and Girardi have contributed offensively, and MDZ's main contributions have been at even strength, but he is on a sweetheart of a deal, and, that being the case, i'm not inclined to trade for a player, no mater how promising, who remains unsigned because his salary demands are outrageous.

I have wanted to say something for a while now but has anyone else noticed quite a few of the Rangers young players come up, look good for a few seasons and then never take that final step. I have been thinking about players like Tyutin, Korpikoski, Dubinsky, Anisimov, now MDZ, Stepan to an extent.

They almost seem to draft players who have a little bit of limited upside but who can be solid NHLers. MDZ came up as a 19 year old. His value is higher now than it was then but he seems to not be able to take that next step. That is why I feel moving him would be an option.

I think it has to do with his skating but something is holding him back.

What O´Reilly should cost

Using Neal & Benn as comparables (both putting up considerably better numbers warranting bigger contracts...

so they asked for Krieder and miller.

we will get ROR for MDZ and they will give us a pick. thats how Sather rolls

Again, I do not understand how moving Del Z is going to help our team. We do not have enough depth to trade away D atm. Moving Del Z would effect our D corps significantly. I am a fan of Strahlman, but I don't like the fact that he would be our only PMD(and not real stellar one at that).

If McIlrath was up here and playing 15 minutes a night, I could entertain the idea. It would still leave an issue for a PMD, but it wouldn't be impossible.

I just don't see how it works given our current make up.

By the sound of it, that doesn't look close to what Colorado want.

I could see this trade (not sure I would like it though) go down:
  • ROR
  • OBrien
  • Prospect D
  • 5th/6th rounder 2013

for

  • MDZ
  • Boyle
  • Prospect fwd (Yogan/MSC...)
  • 3rd rounder 2013

Maybe leave out the picks and/or prospects

If that prospect is Elliot and the Avs add a higher pick, say a 2nd, I would be for it.

ROR + O'Brien + Elliot + 2nd '13 for MDZ + Boyle + Bourque/McColgan

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Pyatt-Richards-Gaborik
Miller-ROR-Callahan
Asham-Halpern-Kreider/Mashinter/Powe

McDonagh-Girardi
Staal-Stralman
SOB-McIlrath
Gilroy, Eminger
