Depth trade, can sub in either for Neil or Kelly on the bottom line. Didn't give up anything of real value to get him, and he could revive his career in Ottawa.

Good trade. Hopefully this is just the beginning, and we make a real impact move in the coming weeks.

How dare we save money!

Who cares. They want to retain. Retain.

I just find it funny. When we make trades we also seem to always try to get the other team to retain money.

Brassard? <- Rangers retained money
Phaneuf? <- Leafs retained money
Hemsky? <- Edmonton retained money

Oh how I love you and your internal budget Eugene Melnyk.

At least you're consistent...

In this case, Wingels is overpaid, so it's a smart move. Budget or not, we shouldn't pay him that much to play on the 4th line. If he does well, we can resign him to a proper contract this summer.

With the minutes Neil has been getting lately, its clearly him who will be sitting.

Shark fan scouting report on Wingels:

He hasn't been as good as he can be for the last couple years. Maybe it was something about the current coaching staff, and maybe the change of scenery will re-energize him. He can score a bit (2 seasons of ~15 goals and ~35 points) but lately he hasn't. He can play an aggressive, hitting, buzzsaw game, but lately he hasn't. Stylistically he's gotten away from himself being a rambunctious energy guy who gets points by getting his hands dirty near the net. Maybe it's also because it tends to cost him games lost due to injury. Who knows.

It kind of makes sense the Sharks would move on from him because they need to clear roster space for guys coming off the IR and seem to have found a different suitable bottom-6 forward to do Wingels' job for cheaper in Ryan Carpenter. Plus the guys the Sharks get from you go to the Barracuda where their forward corps has been thinned out by the promotion of several prospects, and the Sharks get some cap relief and a little more wiggle room so that they don't have to stream guys on the AHL shuttle on off-days to save money

Seems like a sort of relative win-win trade for both sides. You get a potentially decent NHLer for a song, and the Sharks get the financial flexibility and AHL depth they needed to stabilize their roster situation without having to pay the other size to take a dead weight contract or something like that.

I hope Wingels rebounds for you. He's fun to watch when he plays like he can

Could use another legit top 6 guy but it is much more complete looking in the bottom 6

I don't think Wingels slots ahead of Pyatt, especially given his chemistry with Pageau. I think he'll play on the 4th line and perhaps get some shifts here and there on the 3rd.

Bingo is getting weaker...surprised Sailoff wasn't part of the deal.
Still didn't give up anything.

Yes please. Love that lineup. Although Probably the bottom six will be:

Hoffman - JGP - Pyatt
Wingels - Kelly - Neil

I think Belleville will have a ton of new players as the Sens will have more of a reason for the team to have success.

IMO he plays 4th line and Pyatt stays where he is.

Maybe Wingels buzz saw style can help Lazar's game as well.
