Do you not see the lunacy in this mentality? We are already talking about trading for another top scoring threat, after just trading one away? Now we are going to trade the teams best defensemen, and why? So a year later they can trade someone else for a top pairing defensemen, or are we banking that someone in the minors magically comes in and fills the void?

So it goes, the cycle of NYR roster turnover.

See, Gaborik wasn't really a top scoring threat the last 36 or so games with us. If he was one, we would e kept him and we would be higher than 7th in the East. I'm not a Gaborik hater, but that ship has sailed.

Every year we are starved for goals. Nash was part of he answer, but we can't rely on one player.

Left side defense:

1. Staal
2. McDonagh
3. Del Zotto
4. Moore
5. Skjei

Right side defense:

1. Girardi
2. Stralman
3. Eminger
4. McIlrath

The obvious strength is on the left side. 1) If Staal were healthy would Moore be even slotted in to the lineup? 2) Are there enough minutes to go around to all of Staal, McDonagh and Del Zotto on the left side let alone Moore? There's an obvious glut here--not on the right side and unless you believe that one of the top three could be just as comfortable on the right side as the left side it would be IMO crazy to be moving Girardi. I like Stralman but I don't like the idea of him as a top pairing guy or Eminger as No. 2. The Rangers would have to find a replacement for Girardi and who out there is going to trade us a top right defenseman for cheap or even if that player is a free agent he's not coming cheap.

To me if we're moving a d-man for something substantial the obvious candidates are Staal or Del Zotto. First because they'd bring back something more substantial than Girardi would and second because we have a glut of left side defenseman and not enough ice time to keep them all satisfied.

...And this is why you don't trade Staal.

We need somebody to make an elaborate gif where somehow one of the Rangers defensive gaffes that leads to a goal that rips off Jay Walter Weatherman's hand and he says this.

And it's also why management should seriously consider moving Girardi this offseason.

Yes. That too. He's a minute eater, a warrior, but his value is super-high right now, and that could definitely benefit us.

Question is, what do we get for him? I surely don't want Stralman getting top-pairing minutes.

I'm fine with this D:

Staal-MDZ
McD-Stralman
Moore-Vet D/McI

I think we should go after a stabilizing bottom-pairing D - or we could just try and acquire one in the Girardi deal. Just as a stop gap, because I think Moore could be playing top-4 minutes by 2014/2015.

DZ struggles on the right side.

For me, the problem with that is that MDZ hasn't adjusted well to the right side. (Although he started the season well.)

So who would you target for Girardi? I would go for a 20-25 goal physical winger. IDK what would be available though. Any teams looking for RD's with a surplus of wingers?

8000 posts. :banana::propeller:highclap::wave::vhappy::party:

I wouldn't trade Girardi this offseason, unless I am getting back another top pairing RD.

Crease clearing big hitting dman...

Sarich was rumored to be available at the deadline.. i was stoked. but the Flames didnt move Sarich. he would have been a great need on this blueline.. i really wanted Sarich at the deadline.. Sarich also played for Torts.. i wonder if Sather made an offer and Flames declined. good leader for them.

Rangers need that type of dman.. someone to mentor McIlrath when he gets here in early 2014.. i bet he plays another half of year in the AHL and there is nothing wrong with that... rangers defense is soft. there is no reason to put pressure on a 20 year old McIlrath... if the Rangers had a dman that plays that style now, i bet McIlrath would most likely got called up already...

Crease clearing is something that is all but extinct. It's hard to clear the crease while getting in the shooting lanes.

Physical defensemen over the age of 30 could hit the wall at any day and just be done. It's very dangerous committing term to them.

okay bad example. how about Barret Jackman. he has been rumored to NYR for as long as Brassard was??? i doubt the Blues deal him.. UFA in 2 years I believe.

Jackman and Sarich are old, slow, and washed up and have no place on this Rangers team, as most of the crease clearing d-men nowadays such as Erskine, Sourey, Jovo Cop, Orpik.

It's almost a lost form.

These are the reasons why I'm so excited about McIlraths youth and toughness.

I guess the Engelland, Fistric, Peckhams of the world are the new age of crease clearing d-men, those players seem so one dimensional though

Also, Chara and Phaneuf and that pedigree of player don't count because they are so much more than that.

Chara and Phaneuf do not belong in the same sentence. Phaneuf is an overrated block of wood.

We've done decently with Staal out of the lineup, and we don't know if we'll do well without Girardi. I'd rather move Staal since we have 3 (future) top-4 or maybe even top pairing LHD.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it is pretty obvious that Girardi is the player that is least valuable among our top 4 blueliners, and I'd prefer to move him over any of them. He has been this team's most overrated player for a few years now. He's terrible offensively, and his minute eating leads to an overexaggeration of his effectiveness as a defender. He's a good player; he just isn't the all-star/Norris-caliber player some have made him out to be.

Unfortunately, the left/right business makes it tricky. I have a lot of faith in McDonagh, and I could see him adapting to the right side and being just as effective.

Regardless, I'd deal Girardi or Del Zotto over McDonagh or Staal. I just think the latter two are clearly the better players. Staal is one of the best big, tall defensemen in the game today, and those are a rarity.
