Another minute or two. 18 D play more. Hughes plays the most 3:30/g more than MM. there’s room for more.

Try looking at next season instead of last season. Habs want to fix D, so lets assume they add, and have five 20min+ defensemen. This could bring Mikey down from 24:51 to 23:00. However, if they add a D but remove Guhle, the net gain is (approx) zero and Mikey stays at that 24:51.

We should try to do what BUF did and move up using our spare parts. LA is looking for a potential top 9 C. How about Dach + 28 + 61 for 17 ? You can move up from there too

Driving home.

Habs send:
Kaiden Guhle
2027 1st (top 10 protected)
Owen Beck

For
Matthew Knies

Habs then acquire the rights to, or sign as a free agent Mario Ferraro

Habs increase their caphit with the contract that Ferraro would get and obviously the Knies addition, but the team improves on thr wing, adds size, he's skilled and Ferraro is juat as good, or at worst close to as good as Guhle is.

Ferraro honestly might get 8.25 on the open market.

I thought this back when they almost traded Knies at the deadline, and then again now that he's reportedly on the block.

What is wrong with this player? This is typically what it looks like when a team is trying to move a guy, not just listening to calls.

Is it his post injury play or medical related? Character? Requested a trade? Why would they be so keen to move on from a young homegrown player on a cost controlled deal?

They can't move on from Matthews. NMC. Captain. Unless he says I'm out? They are stuck with him.

Nylander too. And Tavares. And Rielly. And Tanev.

They essentially have nothing of value to move. Except one guy. Who took $7.75M after his first good season. With no clauses to stop where he can be moved to until 30-31.

They don't have a first round pick for the next two seasons. Boston and Philly get those. They need to win.

So they are going to essentially give up on a young power forward in exchange for that. Try to get players back that will get them into the playoffs again. Or in Treliving's case he was trying to force a rebuild.

Chayka, my guess, is he wants players now to make the playoffs. In a funny way, he's Calgary with Tkachuk giving him up for a Huberdeau and Weegar. That's what he's hoping for.

Is that crazy stupid?

Yes. It's John Chayka. It's the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Devon Toews/Cale Makar? Quinn Hughes/Brock Faber?

Not every D pairing follows or has to follow the Offensive - Defensive template. If both D are even average on the D side it's fine. If we have the puck most of the time they're on the ice it won't matter anyway.

If we sign Carlson for 2 years, it gives a year for Carrier to play out the rest of his deal, and then Reinbacher slots in the year after if he's not traded. High $ now but off the books quick. He's essentially taking Laine's money.
Actually Hutson will be taking Laine's money with his new contract.

We don't have a hill to die on as we don't have any physical players other than Andy, X and Blais. I think it is fair to have concerns Hughes can get a physical player that fits MSLs system as he hasn't added one in 5 years.

When he keeps saying we need to get harder to play against and add more size and physicallity but then adds Texier, Carrier, Dobson, Veleno, Newhook, Danault, keeps Struble, resigns Matheson it starts to ring hollow.

Kinda like an overweight person saying they have to lose weight through diet and exercise and then sit on the couch with a bag of Doritos.
your idea of "physical player" is incredibly narrow and unrealistic, and you seem to misinterpret "hard to play against".

The team Hughes has assembled, and MSL has coached up, is incredibly hard to play against in the ways that matter the most... winning hockey games.

So weird that this is undervalued.

kinda like an overweight person saying they want to be healthy but thinking avocados and eggs are the enemy and chugging diet coke while gorging on low-fat snacks.

We need Dr. Naz

Stopgap players are here then gone.

McT is signed long term. if they like mct and think he’s worth the contract, then it’s a fair trade. (I’m not convinced)

Habs gonna add a top 4 RD, which will put Rein on the bottom pair for a while. So, current bottom pair D vs top 6 W/C.
Intol an injury to one of those top 4RHD occurs, to which RB can fill in.. thats the depth RB brings while he hones his craft as a #6

If not Knies, habs might look at Carlo.

Issue is Carlo has been so soft in Toronto he makes Caufield look like a f***in" bruiser.

Phillippe Myers might be player the habs take back in a deal. He would be good fof Laval, so it would be a bit of a win

Carlo makes Carrier seem like a grizzled warrior. No interest in either guy being here this year or any other year.

Knies would be a great addition, if they’re confident that Kapanen will be a decent stop gap at 2C (he might be) and/or they think Hage is going to be able to assume that role upon joining the team late during the season (which is a big ask imo).

A top 6 that’s locked up long term of:

Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
Knies - Hage - Demidov

That’s the return to the old “firewagon hockey.”
