HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

Marner is a better player than Matthews in the playoffs. He cares more about the playoffs too. Theres that Nylander/Marner/Matthews bench altercation where Nylander says " All you f***ing do is cry", he's talking directly to Matthews. This guy is a complete loser.
Man id give him 14m anyday to have marner.
100 points players with actual skills and can play defensively. Id rake Laine Gallagher contract just to get him.

Do people realize all those Panthers players including the mighty Barkov were looked at complete chokers before Tkachuk arrived on the scene. All of sudden Barkov is the best thing since sliced bread. Context matters and I don't think people get that. Marner on the Leafs might be a failure but in a different setting he might be a champion.
Yeah, it took them all 10+ years to win and they needed the right mix of players.

Also, Marner was a Memorial Cup champ. Led his team in those playoffs along with…. Tkachuk.

I agree. you need warriors in the playoffs. you need a really good balance.
scoring is key too. last playoffs in the final, habs lacked scoring
It is but they've got Suzuki Caufield Slafkovsky and Demidov. They aren't gonna lack for scoring to the point you should pay 14m for Marner.

Can get Ehlers on FA for a fraction of the cost and get similar playoff production

Very weak straw man regarding reg season.

You don’t seem understand that their roles are vastly different. Comparing a secondary role on a team led by Barkov, Tkachuk, Bobro, Ekblad ….
to a lead role on a team with a myriad of issues.

Context matters. It’s a team game.

Just add one of those leaders to the Leafs and they’d probably get past round 1 a few more times. 5 series went to game 7.

And in all of those game 7s he failed to make the plays needed to win.

When was the last time it went wrong trying to play a blueship winger at center?
I agree but none of them had that level of talent. I'm not advocating for him to play center. I'm just saying he could very well be able and it would fill an enormous hole.

I would prefer to try someone with less potential like Slaf than to take the risk to bust our biggest prospet since Price. Even then, the NHL is not the league where you learn to play center.

It's gonna be up to Hughes to fix that hole. He had 4-5 years to rebuild and center is still a position of weakness, it's kinda mind blowing to be honest.

Well to be fair, it's been only 3 years. It's true he din't fix the 2C hole through draft (jury is still out on Hage) but we are just entering that window where it makes sense to acquire a 2C through trade or UFA. If he can't achieve that this summer or next, I agree it will be a failure.

I don't see many options AVAILABLE for trade at C, and I don't like the options via ufas. Let's hope Hugo can make some magic. It's just the center position was always a problem with the Habs since i started following them in the mid 90s, it's funny. At least we have a first line center now. Would love to have a Koivu or Plekanec to play with him.

  • THIS SUMMER
    • Pro guys that has to go: Savard, Matheson and Pezzetta
    • Pro salary that should be sold: Price.
    • Kids I hope are moved: Mesar, Mailloux, Roy, Kidney and out of left field in a package...Koivu.
    • If we can and if the price is good: Laine and Dach
    • On the bubble: Armia (is this solely his injury?), Evans (so dissapointing...).
    • Sign: Dvo if the price is right.
Aiming at 40% of my wishlist...
Agreed with everything except Dvorak. Where was he in his prior seasons? I don’t trust him to play as good as this contract year. I’m in the camp of not signing him at any price.

Use the savings to add them to some other mon-renewed contract and buy a better player.

If low IQ, fake centre Newhook can go, would be for that too.

We’ve lacked scoring in decades before Suzuki, Caufield evolved. We have more now with Hutson and will be interesting to see what a full season of Demidov offers.

I still believe Demidov should not be ruled out as an eventual 2C candidate. Let him work with Nicholas during the summer and we’ll find out.

Let just say that I was with you a whole lot.....but 2 things that changed my mind...faceoffs and the vet chemistry. Who wins faceoffs for us.And the vet line...well somehow, you might need that line short term in the playoffs. Mind you, we replace him by better and I won't cry either.

For Newhook...3rd line C for me is great if you get rid of Dvorak.

Does Newhook strike you as a low IQ guy, who is more suited to the wing? Or is there more hope?

As for Dvorak, we have cap room and trading assets which should allow the Habs to do better. Will depend how well Hughes can exploit the market for a 2C.

A UFA C looking for a new team might be intrigued at the thought of the creative offensive juggernaut that will be Demidov-Hutson.

Aho, Pettersson, Carlsson, Kotkaniemi (ik ik). Pretty much every European prospect plays wing at the pro level and then converts to center in the NHL. I don't remember which position guys like Ek, Hintz, etc. played but id be surprised if they didn't play wing.

They play C when with their own age group which is what Demidov did at the MHL level and he looked great. His play style fits perfectly for the C position.

If he didn’t have low IQ he wouldn’t have one at all… take a look at that massive forehead - it’s almost a FIVEhead.

Guy just flies around out there, and maybe hits the net one out of every nine attempts. He’s out there with a bunch of tools but absolutely no box to put them in, which is why he always looks a little confused.
