Wouldn't have mentioned him before, but with them trading Carlo to the Leafs I wonder if Zacha could be an option. I recall the Habs having interest in him before he was moved to NJ, plus he is another Quartexx client which Hughes loves.

He'd be a great fit on the second line. Still only 27, left handed, good size, good at faceoffs and solid defensively. Also signed at a reasonable cap hit for 2 more years at under $5M.

Drury fumbling that core is hilarious. They should have traded Laf/Kakko early if they were just going to go all in on oldies. They did a weird as shit retool/patience thing after canning Gorton but also half going in, very Bergevinesque. Now they have good young pieces, but you don't replace Panarin/Kreider/Zibanejad with their prospect pool.

We do like to glaze how well Gorton re-tooled their roster in a short period of time, but honestly they might have been better off just keeping McDonagh and Miller originally. Basically none of the picks they made during that quick sell off became anything except K'Andre Miller. Shesterkin was already in the system and they'd already got Zibanejad.

Though I guess they couldn't have had the foresight to know Panarin, Trouba and Fox would force their way there two years later. Just think though their 2021-22 roster with JT Miller and McDonagh instead of Ryan Strome and rookie Schneider.

Not a lot of clubs with good centers blowing up this summer unfortunately.

Absolutely. He's the best player in the world and I'd have no issue in paying him as such. Someone else will if he goes UFA.

I drool thinking about having 2 duos of : Suzuki - Caufield and McDavid - Demidov. That would be insanely sick and strap a rocket on the rebuild.

If McGenerational does hit UFA you throw max contract at him you don't think twice. He probably would have quite a few max offers on the table and may not choose the Habs but there is nothing wrong with trying.

Unfortunately chances of that happening are low....real low lol

Draisatl didn't sign that long term deal to stay in Edmonton without heavy assurances from McDavid that he was staying.

There isn’t much available. Who are really those names anyway? Teams won’t throw that away for picks and prospects. I don’t have faith that we’ll be able to bring a sure fire centerman between 25-28 years. I think it will be a stop-gap.

I think kings were looking for a real starter in return. Might have cost Montembault without knowing how good PLD will be this year.

Kuemper was also a 100% cap dump last year so I'm not sure, but he's also had a nice resurgence. Funny trade

I'd do whatever it takes to get Tage out of Buffalo. If they're going to tear it all down again that'd be my first target. Since they got rid of Cozens, maybe they're looking for a different player mix.

I'd take an experienced vet like ROR too if big fish hunting doesn’t work out. If I were Hughes, I'd target ROR and Pageau for as cheap as possible to get a C of:

Pageau
Evans

Not elite but super stable and gritty with good faceoffs.

ROR would need to be a #1 passing centre to feed PL and Demi

I think it would make more sense for HuGo to try getting ROR at the draft and if that doesn't work, go fishing when the UFA market opens. Otherwise, I just don't see what the Preds could want to do during the summer that would invalidate ROR's role with them. If they're in a rebuilding mood, the draft is usually where it starts.

Ror is older so he will have fewer options, like Daniel Briere back in the day.

Briere was washed up when he came here. ROR is still able to produce 50-60 points while being great defensively and on draws, pretty much any contending team would want him especially at his reasonable cap hit.

There won't be many actual 2c fishes on the UFA market and the already small number will probably extended before July 1st...

I see trade as the only way to get a 2c, old or young. Hughes will probably hop for another reclamation project or just slot Newhook there next season.

I'm doubtful he'll do that and go against the grain. Suzuki, Caufield and Slaf all agreed to a 8 year deal as soon as they could sign one. On top of that, Hutson is a Quartexx client, Hughes' firm.

Lock in the kids ASAP to current core level deals. Also, they won't get close to McDavid because they're not worth what he is. Also, cap will continue to rise and 2 more teams are expected to join the league soon.

Thinking more about it, if McDavid really was only looking for the most money, he probably would be ok with signing in Edmonton. If he wants to win, he probably knows he has to take less than the max to build a team that will be a regular contender.

The worst of our '25 1st Rd picks and a b-tier prospect like Mesar or Trudeau is probably the most of offer.

We don't really need the retention so I'm not sure I'd add much more to lower his cap hit... Though I could see KH pushing for Nash to take Price's LTIR contract as part of the deal.
