HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread 92 Waiting on the DRAFT Edition

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

A 1st line winger is probably equivalent in value to a 2nd line centre. It’s not far off.

The point is it’s preposterous to think players are rarely traded for picks and prospects, which is what you’re claiming.
It's not what I'm claiming? What I'm saying you're not getting a 2C for picks and prospects before next season starts.

Clear?

And you’re basing it off the fact it’s never happened in NHL history?

Like it’s such a ridiculous thing to claim, that it’s for sure not happening.

No that no one in the league at the moment is looking to trade a 2nd C... Unless you have a crystal ball that states otherwise, I'll believe it when I see it.

Edit: the only one we're aware of is Cozens and apparently the ask was Slafkovsky or Caufield. So you understand the reasoning?

Habs have their forwards getting a lot of hits, but how many can you remember being solid hits ?

Physicality and forward toughness still needs to be addressed

2C is also a glaring hole for like half of the league. We’re not the only one, if one good center somehow becomes available, it will get very competitive. All it takes is one team in the league to be willing to include their top prospect or a good young player to beat us unless we pay up ourselves.

According to online sources, Kadri has 4 years left unless I’m bad at math (I am).

25-26
26-27
27-28
28-29

Either way, I’m really down on Dach but I’m not trading him for a 35 yo Kadri in October with 4 years left at 7M. I’d rather give Dach one last chance or use his contract to help match salary in a big trade. He only has 1 year left. Best case scenario he can hold up for the year. Worse case scenario he leads us to McKenna. Win-win :sarcasm:
Just checked puckpedia and it is 4 more years left......Granlund is the most realistic veteran center just because he is a ufa.

Agreed to disagree, giving up a mid/late 1st for 35 yo Kadri is too much in my opinion, regardless of the draft. Flames pick, if it ends up in teens like it’s trending, could land us one of Martin/O’Brien/Cootes/Carbonneau/Hensler/Spence/Lakovic/Ryabkin/Fiddler/Kindel/Potter.

And you’re comparing apples to oranges. You were suggesting giving up a mid/late 1st for Kadri, I was replying to a comment debating the idea of trading Slaf for a comparable center to Suzuki. I’m not sure what one has to do with the other.

Of course I would also much rather give up Calgary’s pick than Slaf, but we’re also talking about vastly different returns in both scenario.
My way they don't have to give up Slaf. They give up a no so great magic bean for a good 2c. His age means nothing. In fact it might be helpful.

your way they could trade Slaf for a 2c and we can all be back here next year complaining they don't have a winger with size to play in the top 6.

Also seeing CC-Suzuki-Slaf the past 10 games....none of them are available. Simple as that.

Maybe there could be some retention or offset? Kadri has been durable, playing 82 games in each of the prior 2 seasons and has played 65 games so far. This season. Can always be bought out in his last year. Buys time to develop the next center.

I agree Kadri is a good player. I wouldn’t mind him as a stop gap 2C. Even better if it comes with retention! I just disagree with the proposal to acquire him for Calgary’s 1st, especially if that pick ends up in the 11-18 range, which is definitely looking possible at this point. Retention or not, 35 yo Kadri is not worth a pick in the teens in my opinion. If we were talking about 2016 Kadri, sure maybe.

But in any case, I agree with those who says that we’re not getting a good NHL proven center that fits the age group for picks and prospects. If it’s gonna be a future package, it’s either gonna have to be a monster offer (both 1st + Hage or/and Beck) or we’re gonna have to include actual roster player that will hurt (Slaf, Guhle).

Hage should be off the table. He’s that prospect that can become a 2C, whereas Beck has more of a 3rd line C profile. I like Beck also but at least someone like Kapanen might be a good alternative if Beck has to be included in a deal.

I don't understand this. We won't trade Hage for a 2C, because he might become one at some point in the future?

Aside from Suzuki, there isn't a Habs forward, or forward prospect that I wouldn't trade if the right centerman becomes available.
lets start with facts. the best hockey player is, a rookie that in his first year to his 3rd year in the nhl scores 25 goals or more at the entry level contract ( so very good production at dirt cheap. now you must assess the rookie as a true great prospect. Now if you trade this prospect for a 25 goal player that is on his NHL proper value contract is say 7mil per. if not more. Yes your getting a almost sure thing but you HAVE TO PAY HIM and it all counts on the cap. Next to assess is what is your cup window, are you ready NOW or in 3 years or so. Teams that are in thier window must try NOW and will over pay in a trade. Those teams will trade great prospects for the NOW player push for the cup. In 4-5 years your window is closed and you nothing in the prospects. Nobody will hand you a 25 goal guy for a bag of pucks. The proper GM will build his team with as good as he can get top prospects with all his future team reaching their prime at the same time for a great 3-4 year window. Almost all cup teams started off at the bottom for 5 years as they rebuild. Some take 10 years.

Not sure on grandlund
He's 33 and will command a UFA overpay, so I understand. On the flip side, he's produced at a .844 clip the last two years. A UFA overpay on him is much easier to swallow as well. His last contract was $5mil AAV, so not breaking the bank. Dallas won't be able to keep him due to cap crunch. He's a realistic, short-term solution that is better than anything we have on the roster at the moment as an option at 2C.

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, but Dubois would have solved our 2C problem for what, dumping the Dvorak contract in exchange?

It’ll be hard to get someone that fits with our core’s age at a reasonable price. I’d assume the best case scenario would be a Dach 2.0 type of trade; a bet on someone relatively unproven. I don’t know if that’s the path to take moving forward, assuming the goal next season is to be more than just in the mix.

A veteran FA signing stop gap seems like the better alternative. Tavares is the most attractive target to me. Then you pray Hage becomes the solution over the long term.

I gave you a list of players that are available. It’s ridiculous to claim no one has a 2C to trade.

I have a feeling we go the route of a trade for center with term in them mid 20s, but if we go the free agent route there are several good stop gap options as of now like ..

John tavares
Matt Duchesne
Brock Nelson

Sam Bennett obviously is there too. But I would bet we go the trade route for a name that we haven't heard of yet.

I should say that the hockey writers 3 days ago said the idea of Sam Bennett joining the habs has been gaining some traction. They estimate his potential next contract at 7 years and 8 mill per year.

A centre worth trading Hage for would never be available. And atr this point we don't know what Hage's upside is. What he has done on a mediocre team is pretty impressive.
