HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #91: 2025 Trade Deadline edition

To think of all those players they could have traded a year ago!

Think of all the trades they could be making now in this market - definitely a buyers market
… or all the UFA’s they could be signing this offseason - it’s such a good class.

In the mix. Pfft.

Our targets should be Cozens, B. Schenn and other high end 2c's with our excess players and picks,

Something like one of the 1st's + Engstrom and Kapanen.

something along those lines
Brayden Schenn has a full NTC and would never waive to come to a non contender....plus he will be 34 this summer with 3 more years left on his contract.

It's just asset management. At what point does an asset have the highest value and is it more valuable to you than it would fetch in an exchange.
Excluding Matheson, the other two are cases of poor asset management.
If it was 2022 sure…. It’s not rebuild is OVER, that’s just the reality owner wants to make $, players want to make the playoffs.

Time for the throttle push towards playoffs & taking Make Beliefs out in the 1st round

Please follow the conversation. I'm not talking about trading them now......

It's not bad asset management.

Anderson was never getting this fabled 1st round pick, that's a bunch of fan fiction nonsense, it's a terrible overpriced contract with term, even now.

Savard was one of 2 vet defenceman on the team. You can't build any kind of winning environment if your blue line is a bunch of 20-22 year olds and Matheson getting caved in night after night. Savard isn't the greatest player in his mid 30's but just listen to how the players and management talk about him. He's absolutely a role model and a consummate pro that the kids look to for advice and stability. That's worth more than a late first or 2nd round draft pick. We're not trying to be Buffalo.

I think it's time to trade for Zegras, make it happen KH!! I think he would be a solid fit here on the 2nd line. He needs a change of scenery and some of our guys are close to him!
Are we gonna get all the underachievers of the 2019 or what? Dach, Newhook…now we’re asking for Cozens or Zegras

They wont. It'd be like another team saying they should target Suzuki. It's a pointless conversation to have.
Almost, but not quite.

They have 3 top 6 centers. We have 1.

(Stephenson, Beniers, Wright. Catton in the pipeline).

It won’t happen, but it wouldn’t be quite as crazy as Suzuki moving.

Why would Seattle trade Berniers ?
Two straight years at or below .5ppg, no notable injuries. His big season (57pts) had him riding a 16.2% shooting percentage which is not unreasonable but also not sustainable. If they don't see development, they may want to cash out before his contract is seen as a burden and his value plummets. Comparable to Cozens' situation but younger.

They have some depth up the middle. Wright seems to be back on track developmentally, Stephenson was just signed to a big long-term contract. Catton is potentially NHL-bound next season. I think they'd love to add more high picks as they're currently in no-man's-land with some notable players in decline.

The reasons not to trade him are pretty standard with the additional complication of him being their first big pick and face of the franchise type.

Would be a shocker of a trade but not impossible.

I believe Seattle has Stephenson, Beniers, and Wright as centers. I do recall McCann playing center full time so maybe he just got shifted there since they are already overloaded with centers. He’d look pretty good between Laine and Demidov.

It’s not.

The product is what a team puts on the ice. That’s what the fans are paying to see.

The product is not a portfolio of hockey assets.

Sometimes you take some short term pain for long term gain, but not always.

They have to consider that the team should be gradually improving to maintain fan engagement, retain players, sign free agents, and develop current players. They also have to consider active roster and contract limits.

(Look at Jake Evans. Think he’d stay if those players were traded and they were 12 points out of a playoff spot?)

You should think of a team as “product development” rather than “portfolio management”.

Definitely more correct than not, but not throwing out Josh Anderson when he had the chance was a big mistake. Hughes has made his share of mistakes and now comes the fun part -- he will continue to make mistakes but as long as things are developing, it should be fine.
