Habs were rumored to have offered multiple picks, but didn’t have a prospect like Heineken to offer up, which Cgy was insistent on

Don't recall seeing that... Source?
if that was the rumored rational, it's pretty unlikely to be factual. Heineman was hardly an A-tier prospect & Habs had several comparable prospects and 2* '21 2nds to leverage. That package was easy to beat both in pick & prospect assets.

Flames have made some bad trades in recent years. Bennett was traded year we went to Finals. I doubt Bergevin was in on that trade as his roster was mostly set.

He traded for a decrepit Eric Staal that year, whom Bennett was already more effective than at the time and obviously with a far better runway.

Bennett filled a need at the time and organizational depth-wise for the visible future at the time. He was an ideal target if we had a competent GM at the time... We didn't, and instead we ended up adding Dvorak & Hoffman up front the following summer lol

Our C depth going into the next season:
Suzuki - Dvorak - Evans - Poehling... Nuff said ;)

I have my strong opinions on what we should do with our FAs this trade deadline but regardless of my position I am so curious to see what our management actually does and how they will explain it (either way).

March 7th can’t come fast enough.

I wonder why?

So far Canes have had issues retaining UFAs they trade for, but are able to resign their own players.
Great question. Can't stand that organization but they have good weather, good coach & competitive. Maybe just bad luck with the players they're targeting. Trading for pending UFAs is always risky especially if they're good players & looking to get paid.

Canes need to stick to sign & trades moving forward lol

Canes acquire players and then immediately put forward an offer with a hometown discount in it. Hard and fast. The worst that could happen is the player rejects it. They figure there is no long term consequence.

Apparently the Canes already offered him market value and he declined. I can see the Leafs going for him to try and change things up. Marner to the Hawks and Rantanen to the Leafs.

Rantanen's not going to Toronto out of every places possible in the league, come on.

He's going to a nice market with at least one fellow countrymen.

I'm expecting Florida or Dallas.

I could see the Make Beliefs ADD Rantannen exclusively as a deadline rental to play w Marner & Matthews

And how can that work both trade value and cap wise
Canes are only paying $4.7M AAV w Chi absorbing % of cap in original deal w Avs - Car has all 3-slots open, so if they are willing to absorb 50% of remaining AAV, Leafs can easily fit $2.35M cap hit

Not surprised. Rantanen will get his money, but might as well select a destination of your own choosing rather rush into a shotgun marriage.

He'll get his bag and play next to a superstar center in Matthews. Panthers don't need another winger, especially when Bennett and/or Ekblad might leave. Stars are going to have cap trouble and are loaded up front already.
