Signing Sam Bennett for an 8-year, 64-million dollar contract is a tough sell given that Michael Hage is 2 years away.
Two years away from what? as an UFA, it would be 7 years for Bennett; 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35.

He can be the 2C in years one two three and four, maybe even five of that contract, with Hage moving up with the Habs at the trade deadline in year three of that contract, and starting off as the 3rd line C for two years, the time he needs to get acclimatized to the NHL and start having an impact.

Two years away does not mean that Hage will be any good to start.

Spittin’ Chicklets guys are convinced some team will cough up $10M to Bennett this summer - especially Ryan Whitney
Any GM thay gives Bennett a long term contract north of $9M would be approaching Milbury, Hextall level bad.

I like Bennett but these numbers are insane.

Well I hope it's not us.....10M for 45 pts per season is not very wise management, it's Bergevin level.

These are Josh Anderdon numbers,no? Let Buffalo pay 10M for their 2nd line center.

Hughes need to find an alternative for that 2nd line. Maybe they think Demidov will handle that position next week and try to find an top nhl winger like Rantanen or Marner?

Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovski
Laine-Demidov-Rantanen
Heineman-Dach-Anderson
Newhook-Kapanen-Armia/Gallagher

I think Utah owner will open up the vault - he’s known for being very very impatient

Side note, would be too funny if Canes / Fla swap Rantannen for Bennett
Utah would be far better off giving more to Rantenan, Marner etc. Bennett is a solid player but his intangibles are not worth a multiple in the mid millions per year.

This is why the best player (contract wise and term) we can sign to fill the 2C then 3c role is Stammer from NSH. gotta try to get him while his value is low.

Yeah, unless the Canes can pull off a miraculous trade to get back a prime asset by retaining salary on Rantanen and dealing him by the TDL, that deal is going to be a huge misstep by that franchise.
never make long term decisions when your players have not signed (see Boston).. Agent(s) will jump all over it. Just poor management.

The thing is that we always have this ideal time of arrival for prospect such as "Hage in 2 years". But getting to the NHL is 1 thing, then adapting is a 2nd, then having an impact is the hardest.

Sam Bennett can elevate our top 6. Now and for at least the next 4 years. We will need to be competitive in the next 5 years. Why sacrifice getting better if we can add someone that has pedigree and is a warrior like Bennett?

...cost...we will have to be the highest bidder to get him to come here...
