With Dvo and Evans both likely gone it's going to even more important to add a solid veteran center this summer. Imagine losing Suzuki to injury next season and our center depth becomes Dach, Beck, ?, ?. That has the makings of a 32nd ranked team lol.

Now's the time to use the assets we've built up to shore up the team at center.

Well I heard that McKenna is projected 1st pick ov next year no? 😀

I dont. unless they get a RD or 2nd centre.
this team needs improvements to make it
I mean we were in the mix for a little while this year and we are adding Demidov on an ELC. I think people underestimate the effect he’ll have. I’m not saying the team will be contenders, but it’s a significant improvement over playing Newhook in the Top 6. We should challenge for a wild card spot.

And of course this is just one of what I assume will be several moves this summer to improve the team.

That’s a disingenuous statement.

Nobody thinks that Bennett will get 10 million per. It’s not realistic.

But Bennett as a UFA, paying above market price to sign (say 8.5 million per) is a lot more palatable than paying the kings ransom in assets it would require to pick up Pettersson from Vancouver, AND pay him 11 million per after.
Not at all. Read the thread. I was arguing a few days ago with guys who thought he’d get $9M, then today I’m seeing g $10M on a short term contract.

Nothing g disingenuous about this post at all.

already wants out

KH wont bite I bet
I don’t know that’s a consideration. He’s at the point in his career where he can control his destiny and he may not want to do the storm surge to please Dundon.

There is nothing for him to bite on with the Habs — we’re just not a destination market for that type of UFA superstar.

Scoop: The Canes pulled off the blockbuster deal almost exactly one month ago, snatching Rantanen from Colorado on Jan. 24. One month later, they haven’t come to an agreement on an extension. Rantanen’s production has slipped in Carolina, too, with just two points in six games – even if his underlying numbers suggest he’s played just as well (or better!). Carolina won’t be afraid to flip him if they can’t extend him, and the closer we get to March 7 without a deal, the more likely it is. Chicago already retained half, so Carolina could knock Rantanen down to just a $2.313 million cap hit for the remainder of this season if they wanted. Juicy!

Signing Sam Bennett for an 8-year, 64-million dollar contract is a tough sell given that Michael Hage is 2 years away.

And if he has another good playoffs, some team will give him 10M/per, just watch...

Anaheim or Columbus. Both have the ample cap room, young talent and GMs with love for "truculence". Whichever can get ownership sign off will go all in to pay the top dollar to get him signed.

I guess Bennett could be converted to wing as Hage emerges.

Indeed. He'd be a great fit, but with the 4 nations hyperbole & the big cap increase, I don't see KH being willing to be the highest bidder (& I support that, Bennett's injury list grows longer every season and with it the odds that he'll see an accelerated decline through the back half of his next deal, if not sooner).

It's a shame we didn't target him aggressively when he was with the Flames. He was very evidently a great buy-low candidate then and would've been easy to acquire).

My recollection is Bergevin did, no? I remember that being rumoured constantly.

I had been advocating heavily for us to trade for Bennett for a while before he was moved, and I don't recall ever seeing any credible reports that we were in the mix... Despite the obvious fit & need.

Cost was essentially 2*2nds (Heineman being one, ironically). We could have easily beat that back in '21.

Habs were rumored to have offered multiple picks, but didn’t have a prospect like Heineken to offer up, which Cgy was insistent on

He is, unless we end up with the 1st overall pick. Then he's going to have a disastrous draft year and lose his consensus 1st overall status.:help:
And change his name to Shane fright ? Right ?

$10m. he's worth $8mil, but you gotta pay the UFA and MTL tax.
At a certain point you have to overpay to add a key piece . I am with you on Ben et , especially that his hard style never stop kind of play is perfect for a young team
