Emberson is a forgettable bottom pair RD, not the level the Habs need.
RDs are always needed. Emberton is most likely on the cheaper side and still young. Are we going to go with Mailloux, Reinbacher and Carrier next year?
Which RD UFAs could possibly sign here?
Which RD are we going to trade for and what is the cost?

Ekblad or similar profile RHD is exactly what Habs needs. Experienced vet, cup winner and can still anchor a top pairing and log big minutes while the next Gen can play more sheltered minutes and not get thrown into the fire.

Habs don’t need a Savard or Kovy replacement. They need better players, not more of the same but slightly younger.
The absolute last thing I'd want our club to do is sign Aaron "bandaid" Ekblad to a long term contract, which is what it would take to get him out of Florida.

He hasn't played a full season in 7 years, he can hardly skate, he doesn't put up points anymore even with him being on the 1st PP on a cup contending team, he's not physical....besides experience which is great and needed, what does he bring to the table for us?

He's in a great spot in Florida where he's a complimentary piece to a cup contending team, can't see him leaving.

I’m not advocating for Ekblad but that type of verteran D. Hopefully someone who can have the same impact that Weber had when he came over and anchored the D. A bonafide no. 1 RHD anchor who has a few years of productive years left in them and then move down or go away to make way for the youth coming up to replace him.

Hopefully, they get an actual top4 RD via trade. This should be the biggest priority for the Habs.

I'm fine with a rookie or Struble on the bottom pair.

I wouldn't spend assets to get Emberson's rights.

I agree we need a veteran RD, maybe two, but I don't believe we need a bonafide #1 given the pieces we already have on the backend.

Me too. If our top 4 D includes Hutson, Guhle, Carrier, and that top4D then they should be able to play minutes that insulate the third pairing.

Not many teams with extra top 4 RDs. With a Quick Look I could only see Calgary, NYI and Utah.

RHDs are more difficult to acquire than centers.

Agree on the D, but we don’t have any top tier RHD at the moment. That player would be a stop gap until one of ours hopefully can take over in town.

None as waiver claim with a cap hit under 800K.

What you are asking is a dmen that will cost a most draft picks, prospects and maybe roster players and with a cap hit north of 7mil.

If it's the right piece, so what? I don't want the team to compete for the playoffs. I want them to compete for the cup. Adding average pieces is a surefire way to end up as the former rather than the latter.

I genuinely believe it is the losing culture

And I’m genuinely worried about the Habs falling into this pit of despair if they don’t make efforts to force a culture change and keep it moving in the right direction.

Our year on year pt% improvement will likely hit a screeching halt this year. The regression can be bad news if Hughes doesn’t make serious efforts to reinforce the team and convince the roster that they have an upcoming season for which it is worth training and playing hard.

It’s hard to move forward when three of five top6 forwards move backward and a fourth top6 is a broken down capdump.

Next year’s team has to be different

I agree. I feel we've seen some of that creep in this year, both at the start of the year and how they've folded post-winning streak. They have still have low resiliency and few, if any, players who can take charge like Subban, Markov and Price used to do.
